The video was published by VEVO on September 9, 2013 . It starts with a close up of Cyrus' face, crying against a white background. Subsequently, the singer is shown wearing only ox - blood - colored laced boots , sitting on a wrecking ball and briefly licking a sledgehammer. These scenes received negative reviews from several critics. 24 hours after its release, the video reached 19.3 million clicks, breaking One Direction's VEVO record (12.3 million). The music video is directed by photo artist Terry Richardson .

Wrecking Ball was number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 , number 44 on the Canadian Hot 100 and number 19 on the Irish charts before the song was released as a single. In the first two weeks, the song sold about 291,000 times through download sales in the United States.
