Vevo ([ 'viːvəu ] own notation: vevo for v ideo evo lution) is a music video - and entertainment online service for various platforms. It is operated by Sony Music Entertainment , Universal Music Group and the Abu Dhabi Media Company; also Google 's stake in the company. The service officially launched on December 8, 2009 and comprised approximately 45,000 music videos as of January 2016.

In order to attract large advertisers, Vevo initially censored all videos with offensive content ( “explicit content” ). The company has deviated from this approach since the beginning of 2011 and is now making both uncensored and censored versions of the affected videos available. Videos are distributed both via YouTube and via the vevo.com service's own website . This was available at the beginning of 2014 in the USA, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Germany, Poland and Great Britain, among others.

Vevo was initially not available in Germany because, according to its own information, no agreement could be reached with GEMA in November 2010 . On September 2, 2013, Vevo announced that it had reached an agreement with GEMA. Since October 1, 2013, users have been able to access Vevo in Germany via the website and via apps for smartphones, tablets and game consoles and the Apple TV set-top box, and since March 2014 via the Chromecast HDMI stick from Google . Although the Vevo videos can be streamed to the TV, Vevo TV has not yet been streamed . Vevo started in Germany without YouTube, until an agreement between GEMA and YouTube in November 2016.

On May 24, 2018, Vevo announced that its own website would be discontinued, but that Vevo music videos would continue to be offered on YouTube and other platforms.
