One Direction is a British - Irish boy group consisting of Niall Horan , Liam Payne , Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson . It was founded in 2010 as part of the seventh edition of the British casting show The X Factor , where it reached 3rd place in the final and then received a recording contract with Sony Music .
history
2010: The X-Factor
The initially five band members competed as individual candidates at the beginning of The X Factor , but were formed into a group in the boot camp on the advice of guest juror Nicole Scherzinger and thus assigned to the group category. Although they were only third, the five band members signed a £ 2 million record deal with Sony Music.
2010–2011: Up All Night
On September 11, 2011, the group released their first single What Makes You Beautiful in the UK and Ireland . It immediately reached number 1 in both countries. The second single Gotta Be You from their first album Up All Night was released on November 11, 2011. In addition to the announcement of a tour of Great Britain and Ireland, a tour with the American band Big Time Rush was announced in early November . The band's first album was also released in the US on March 13, 2012.
In the German-speaking countries, the first single What Makes You Beautiful was released on December 2, 2011, but could not match the success at home there. In the United States, the single was at number 4 on the charts. The album Up All Night reached number 1 there and in Ireland and number 2 in Great Britain. With One Thing and More Than This two more songs from the album hit the charts.
2012–2013: Take Me Home , feature film and Midnight Memories
On August 12, 2012, the group performed at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics at the London Olympic Stadium . With Live While We're Young a new single was released on September 28, 2012. She achieved good positions in the charts and also made it into the top 10 in Austria and Switzerland. Immediately before the release of her second album, the song Little Things was released worldwide on October 29th . In the UK it was her second number one hit . The album Take Me Home reached number one in many countries and also achieved top positions in German-speaking countries.
In 2013 One Direction took part in the Comic Relief charity campaign . They recorded a mash-up of One Way or Another by Blondie and Teenage Kicks by Undertones as a single . The song was released in mid-February and became another international hit as well as the third number one hit in the UK and Ireland. Her second concert tour began in February 2013. In May 2013 they announced the next world tour in 2014. It's called Where We Are . Her third book, Where We Are - Our Band, Our Story , was published in August 2013 . At the end of August, the 3D documentary This Is Us was released in cinemas worldwide. The Our Moment perfume was launched in Germany for the first time in September . On November 25, 2013, the group released their third studio album, Midnight Memories . The first single Best Song Ever was released on July 22, 2013, the second single Story of My Life on October 28, 2013.
2014–2015: Four , departure of Zayn Malik and Made in the AM
Four , One Direction's fourth album, was released on November 17, 2014. The song Fireproof could already be downloaded free of charge from the band's website. Steal My Girl , released on September 29, 2014, was the first single released from the album. The second single Night Changes was released on November 14, 2014.
In March 2015, Zayn Malik left the band for personal reasons, which has since continued as a quartet . Their fifth and last studio album was released on November 13, 2015 and is entitled Made in the AM. The first single Drag Me Down was able to reach good chart positions worldwide. Two other singles were released, Perfect and History . The four musicians announced on August 25, 2015 that the group would take a break for one year from March 2016. A return as a band should take place in March 2017. In June 2016, however, it was announced that Styles would no longer be represented by the group's management; in spring 2017 his first solo single Sign of the Times was released . The other band members also released their own singles and albums.
