Comic Relief is the name of a charity founded in the UK by Lenny Henry and Richard Curtis in 1985 in response to the famine in Ethiopia .

The organization raises funds for Africa and disadvantaged people in the UK , originally the organization received its funds through live events. The idea for Comic Relief came from philanthropist Jane Tewson. Since its inception, the foundation has collected around £ 1.047 billion (around 1.45 billion euros) for aid projects.

One of the basic principles behind the work at Comic Relief is the "Golden Pound Principle", whereby every pound donated must go to a charity. All operating costs are borne by company sponsors or from the interest on income that has not yet been donated.
