Paul Bruce Dickinson (born August 7, 1958 in Worksop , Nottinghamshire , England ) is a British rock musician and singer of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden .

Life

Youth and career

Bruce Dickinson was born in the English mining town of Worksop in 1958. He spent his childhood with his sister, the show jumper Helena Stormanns (better known as Helena Weinberg), with his grandparents, until he and Helena moved to Sheffield with his parents (Bruce & Sonja) at the age of six and went to school there.

His school days, which he spent mainly in boarding schools, were very turbulent; he had to change schools frequently. According to his own statements, he was an outsider and loner at the time. As a teenager he came into serious contact with contemporary rock music for the first time, which prompted him to make music himself. While still in school, he joined his first band as a singer after being convinced he could sing better than play drums.

Later he changed bands with the school. With a group called "Styx" Dickinson gained his first experience of public appearances until he moved to London to study history at Queen Mary College . There, too, he sang in various bands, but without any success. His first sound recording was in 1977 singing the song Dracula by an otherwise unknown band called "Shots". Dickinson played with this band in various London pubs, where he was discovered in 1978 by Paul Samson , the guitarist and head of the band Samson . Samson offered Dickinson the singing position in his band, which he accepted and soon gave up his studies for it.

With Samson he recorded two very successful albums: Head On (1980) and Shock Tactics (1981). He called himself here "Bruce Bruce", which was intended as an allusion to a Monty Python sketch.

Iron Maiden

When Iron Maiden split from previous singer Paul Di'Anno in 1981 , Dickinson was soon considered as his successor. After lengthy negotiations, Dickinson finally accepted the offer of bassist and head of the band Steve Harris and left Samson for it. After a short tour of Italy, the album The Number of the Beast was recorded. Initially, many Iron Maiden fans were skeptical about the change, as Dickinson's melodic voice was very different from the rough, punk- like voice of Di'Annos. Samson's music also had little in common with Iron Maidens. However, when the pre- single Run to the Hills was released in 1982 , all doubts seemed dispelled: the record rose to number seven on the British charts. The album, which reached number 1 shortly afterwards, and the tour that followed finally convinced the fans, and soon Dickinson was no longer seen as a replacement for Di'Anno, but was hailed as the band's new singer. With Dickinson as the front man, Iron Maiden was immensely successful in the following years. From 1982 to 1992, each of their albums reached a top 3 position in the UK charts. The band played in sold out concert halls and arenas around the world. Dickinson perfected his stage behavior during these years, which was characterized by enormous activity and well-considered addresses to the audience. As a special trademark, the saying “Scream for Me” was introduced during the World Piece Tour in 1983 , which always aroused euphoric reactions from the audience. Dickinson's high-pitched voice has earned him the nickname “Air Raid Siren”. While still at Iron Maiden, he sang the song Lone Wolf on the band Xero's 1983 single Oh Baby , but only as a demo version. On the single, this B-side was announced by a sticker, which led to a dispute with Xero, not just because of the use of the Iron Maiden logo. As a result, the song sung by Dickinson was no longer allowed to be used, so that a second version of the single was released, which no longer contained the song.

Beginning of the solo career

When the band took a long break after the tour for the album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son , Dickinson was asked to write and record a song for the soundtrack of the movie Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - The Trauma . To do this, he enlisted a long-time friend, Janick Gers , and Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter was born. Steve Harris later arranged for the song to be re-recorded by Iron Maiden, and as a single it reached number 1 on the British charts at the turn of the year 1990/91.

Dickinson was soon offered a studio contract for a solo album, which he accepted. With Gers he wrote some new songs that were released on Tattooed Millionaire in 1990 . Contrary to the fears of Iron Maiden fans, this was only a side project that Dickinson pursued because - as he himself said - he had the opportunity. Dickinson and his band, which consisted of Andy Carr (bass) and drummer Dicki Fliszar in addition to Gers, went on a successful tour and a successor was planned. Dickinson worked with his old friend and guitarist Myke Gray on a series of songs that were also recorded as demos, but did not meet his requirements. He sought advice from producer Keith Olsen , and it soon turned out that Dickinson was in a creative lull and didn't know how to move on. As he later said, this was partly due to the fact that he was generally regarded as the singer of Iron Maiden and has now felt this to be a burden. This dissatisfaction is evident on the album Fear of the Dark (1992). Finally, Dickinson announced his departure from the band during the album tour, which also took place in August 1993.

After breaking up with Iron Maiden

Now he returned to Keith Olsen and finished the recordings he had started, but was already dissatisfied with the result while working. During this time he was on the band Tribe of Gypsies attentive and made friends with their guitarist Roy Z on. With this he began to write some songs that were actually intended for the Keith Olsen album, but ultimately formed the core of a completely new work. From the Keith Olsen sessions, only one song, Tears of the Dragon , was ultimately kept, the rest was completely rewritten and recorded with Tribe of Gypsies. The resulting album, Balls to Picasso , was released in June 1994 and was particularly successful in South America, but also in Europe, but went under completely in the United States due to difficulties with the local record company Mercury Records . The album wasn't nearly as successful as Tattooed Millionaire and especially not like the Iron Maiden records.

Skunkworks

Since Tribe of Gypsies got their own recording contract with Mercury Records shortly afterwards, a continuation of Balls to Picasso with them was out of the question. With a hitherto unknown young guitarist, Alex Dickson , Dickinson went on a completely acoustic European tour, on which mainly pieces by Balls to Picasso and Tattooed Millionaire were played as well as a few cover songs, but no Iron Maiden songs. In interviews from that time, Dickinson also stated that he had graduated from Maiden and did not want to have anything to do with the band. Rather, he tried to integrate himself into a new band called Skunkworks , which, in addition to Alex Dickson, consisted of Chris Dale ( electric bass ) and Alessandro Elena ( drums ). This band went on tour before working on new songs and released the live album Alive in Studio A in March 1995 , but with Bruce Dickinson as the artist. A year later, the only studio album by Skunkworks was released, also known as the Bruce Dickinson solo album. It flopped, and the press at the time was more interested in Dickinson's new short haircut than in the album, which had nothing to do with his earlier works and was more on the alternative track. It was also indicative of the fact that the album was produced by Jack Endino , who was responsible for grunge bands such as Green River and Nirvana .

Later successes

After the album failed, Skunkworks broke up, not least because of too different views on the musical direction. Skunkworks became Sack Trick , and Dickinson decided to give up music. In 1996 Dickinson got a call from Roy Z who asked if he would like to record some of the songs he had written with him. Dickinson initially declined, but when Roy Z played the pieces for him, he changed his mind. The cast of Balls of Picasso was reactivated for the recordings . Again Dickinson was accompanied by the musicians from the band Tribe of Gypsies, namely Roy Z on guitar, Eddie Casillas as bassist and David Ingraham on drums. The music could now be described as Heavy Metal again, with clear borrowings from Iron Maiden, but also Balls to Picasso . Dickinson sensed that the cast lacked a member who could play guitar solos as he wished. He immediately thought of Adrian Smith , who left Iron Maiden in 1990 and has since had an unsuccessful solo career, at that time in a band called "Psycho Motel". Smith not only promised to record some guitar solos on the new album, but also to act as a full member of the band. In June 1997 the album Accident of Birth was released and achieved great success in the metal scene . Dickinson was seen by many as the successor to Iron Maiden, who with their new singer Blaze Bayley were less commercially successful than ever and faced severe criticism. Dickinson's band eventually went on a successful world tour. The band stayed together in this line-up and produced a successor. The Chemical Wedding appeared in 1998 and sold very well, especially in South America. On the next tour was in Brazil's São Paulo the live album Scream for Me Brazil added.

After Maiden had completed a less successful tour with Blaze Bayley in 1998, many believed that there would be no more third album with this singer, Dickinson's return to Iron Maiden became the content of many rumors. Even Dickinson's reunion with Adrian Smith, the two studio albums, stylistically based on Maiden, and the fact that more Iron Maiden songs were played at the concerts, seemed to leave no doubt. In late 1998, Iron Maiden split from Blaze Bayley. In early 1999 it was announced that Dickinson and Adrian Smith had rejoined the band.

Iron Maiden on the Early Days Tour 2005

Reunion with Iron Maiden

The public reaction to reunification has generally been very positive. Occasionally, however, there were also critical voices, especially from the Dickinson fan camp, who feared that this would end the solo career. Dickinson tried to appease his fans by announcing a new solo album. In 2001 The Best of Bruce Dickinson was released, a compilation of eleven songs from his solo career as well as two new pieces written with Roy Z especially for this record. The first edition also contained a second CD, which contained various, mostly unpublished, but in any case rare recordings. In the summer of 2002, Dickinson finally went on a short European tour and in August 2002 played his biggest solo headlining show at Wacken Open Air . On the tour he was accompanied by Pete Friesen (who was also on tour as guitarist with Alice Cooper) and drummer Robin Guy, along with his former Skunkworks colleagues Alex Dickson (guitar) and Chris Dale on bass. The band played six concerts between June and August, the setlist consisted of a best of his solo career, with Maiden songs ( The Prisoner and Powerslave ) being played at the end of the shows .

It took three years before work on the successor to The Chemical Wedding was officially announced. When Tyranny of Souls was released in the spring of 2005, it quickly became the best-selling Dickinson album. All the tracks are written by Bruce Dickinson and Roy Z. As in 1994 and from 1997 to 1998, the backing band consisted of the current musicians from Tribe of Gypsies. In addition to Roy Z as guitarist, David Moreno on drums and Juan Perez as bassist this time. The critics celebrated Tyranny of Souls as far superior to the last Iron Maiden album Dance of Death . Many fans were disappointed because, in their opinion, the album did not meet the standards of The Chemical Wedding : There was no real band that recorded the album together, instead each instrument was recorded individually and at often widely spaced intervals and then with Dickinson's vocal recordings merged. Roy Z, who wrote the instrumental parts of the songs, has been accused that his songwriting was largely lacking in creativity and that the production he carried out seemed too superficial and patched up.

Some Dickinson fans saw the album as a declaration of war on Iron Maiden, particularly Steve Harris and producer Kevin Shirley , who were accused that the music was not adapted to Dickinson's vocals and that he was being tormented as a result. Dickinson himself has never commented directly on this, but has often indirectly indicated that he is not entirely satisfied with Shirley's production and Harris' songwriting. Nevertheless, after vague rumors of separation the previous spring, he showed unity during the tour with Iron Maiden in the summer of 2005. In 2006 a new Iron Maiden album A Matter of Life and Death was released , which was acclaimed by both fans and critics.

Pilot and operator

Dickinson has had a pilot's license since the early 1990s and was a full-time pilot of the British charter airline Astraeus until it went bankrupt at the end of 2011. The job as a pilot was also the reason for his heavy metal atypical short haircut. He took a vacation to work with Iron Maiden and for his solo career. This theme can be found in some of the songs he wrote, most notably in Kill Devil Hill on Tyranny of Souls .

During the Iron Maiden tour "Flight 666" (323 days, 154 concerts on 5 continents, 4.3 million visitors) the tour aircraft, a converted Boeing 757 , was flown by Dickinson himself. The unofficial radio nickname of the machine is "Ed Force One", which is derived on the one hand from the band mascot Eddie, which is depicted on the fin , and on the other hand is an allusion to the aircraft of US President Air Force One .

He currently trains pilots himself and owns Cardiff Aviation in Cardiff , which maintains various types of aircraft. In 2014 Dickinson bought the Airlander , the longest airship in the world (92 meters). Since May 2015 he has worked as a manager for Air Djibouti , which resumed flight operations in 2015.

In 2016, Iron Maiden became the Boeing 757 to small and you moved to a Boeing 747-400 , therefore, as a new "Ed Force One." For the Tour 2016 Advanced Dickinson his type rating, so the type rating on the Boeing 747, with which the band has been touring since then. The conversion from Boeing 757 to 747 made Dickinson between rehearsals for the world tour.

Works

Albums

  • Tattooed Millionaire (1990) was, according to Dickinsons, not a serious solo album, but just a side project that he had done with a few friends for fun. The album is therefore not very serious in its content, some of the songs ( Born In '58 , Tattooed Millionaire ) have tongue-in-cheek autobiographical traits. Stylistically, it differs from the Iron Maiden albums released up until then and is more like hard rock of the more commercial kind. Almost all of the songs were written by Dickinson and Janick Gers, except for All the Young Dudes , a David Bowie cover.
  • Balls to Picasso (1994) is considered by many fans to be the first “real” solo album. The centerpiece of the album is Dickinson's composition Tears of the Dragon , which can be seen as a processing of his emotional difficulties of recent years. The other songs were written with Roy Z and recorded with the members of Roy Z's band Tribe of Gypsies . This album is also marked by strong differences to the music of Iron Maiden , but can still be largely assigned to Heavy Metal. Some songs like Shoot All the Clowns and Sacred Cowboys are more experimental, the former is more in the direction of Aerosmith , the latter is mostly rap- like chanting.
  • Skunkworks (1996) is Dickinson's most controversial solo album. It is probably thanks to the failed attempt to look for a new identity in a new band and consequently to let the other band members have an equal say in the style of the album that the music on this album can be described more as alternative rock . Although this music was adapted to the style of the time, the album flopped. Thematically, the album seems to be largely inspired by a Skunkworks concert that took place in Sarajevo during the siege of the city. War and propaganda, but also science fiction, are recurring themes in the songs.
  • Accident of Birth (1997) is seen by many as an alternative to Iron Maiden. Adrian Smith's entry into the band and the cover of longtime Maiden illustrator Derek Riggs seem to confirm this. The style is a bit modernized Heavy Metal, which again approaches the sound of Iron Maiden. In addition to ten Dickinson / Roy-Z songs, there are also two that Smith was involved in. Again Tribe of Gypsies was the backing band, reinforced by Adrian Smith.
  • The Chemical Wedding (1998) is considered by some to be a concept album due to the strong musical and textual similarity of the individual songs . The central theme of the album is alchemy and the occupation with the occult . Many texts were inspired by Aleister Crowley and William Blake , and some text passages were even completely taken from poems by the latter. The album is very dark and very cryptic in its lyrics for listeners who are not familiar with either Crowley's or Blake's work. Here, too, two songs were co-composed by Adrian Smith, the rest was written by Dickinson / Roy Z. The backing band was the same as on the previous album.
  • Tyranny of Souls (2005) sees itself in some ways as a sequel to The Chemical Wedding , especially due to the fact that a song ( Believil ) was written for that album. Otherwise, it is mainly concerned with the fate of man, which Dickinson regards as continuous progress. So is Kill Devil Hill by the Wright brothers , while Navigate the Seas of the Sun , the Dickinson sees as the core of the album deals with the exploration and colonization of space. Here all the songs were written by Dickinson and Roy Z, the instruments were played by various musicians, some of whom were unknown to Dickinson himself, but mostly again by the members of the Tribe of Gypsies .

Songwriting

For most of the songs with his involvement - both Iron Maiden and his solo albums - Dickinson wrote mainly the vocal melodies. However, there are also some songs that were completely written by him. The first is Revelations on the Iron Maiden album Piece of Mind (1983); Flash of the Blade and Powerslave followed shortly thereafter , both on Powerslave (1984). These pieces are characterized above all by their complicated instrumental structures and thus fit into the overall work of Iron Maiden without losing individual characteristics. On his solo albums there are only two songs completely written by him: No Lies ( Tattooed Millionaire ) and Tears of the Dragon , both of which have similar characteristics to the ones mentioned. Although only Dickinson is named as the composer for Bring your Daughter to the Slaughter , the music was mainly written by Janick Gers.

Thematically, Dickinson's songs deal mainly with mystical and mythological themes, which can sometimes also be interpreted metaphorically. In the " Flight of Icarus " written with Adrian Smith, the Greek legend of Icarus was transferred to today's generation conflict. Revelations carrying Hindu and Christian elements together. Powerslave looks at Egyptian mythology from the perspective of a dying pharaoh . Later the songs increasingly deal with the occult, for example Moonchild on Seventh Son of a Seventh Son or most of the songs on Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding .
