Stephen Percival Harris (born March 12, 1956 in Leytonstone , London , England ) is the co-founder, bassist and songwriter of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden . Today he is the only remaining founding member of the band.

Life

Prior to his music career, Harris played football on the youth team at West Ham United , where he was seen as a promising talent but then decided to go to music. Harris taught himself to play the bass at the age of 17 and was influenced by various musicians including Chris Squire , Mike Rutherford , Geddy Lee , Andy Fraser and John Entwistle .

After working as a draftsman in London, he started his music career in the band Influence, which later renamed itself Gypsy's Kiss . He later joined the band Smiler , in which all the band members were a lot older than himself. Steve Harris left Smiler when the other band members made it clear to him that they were actually not interested in a bass player who was unusually committed on stage showed and wrote songs. Then Harris founded his own band on December 25, 1975, which was later named Iron Maiden and is still called that today. Over time, the band has become one of the most influential groups in heavy metal.

Harris is the father of six children, his daughter, Lauren Harris has also started a music career and has appeared as supporter for Iron Maiden's A Matter of Life and Death Tour 2006 and A Matter of the Beast Tour 2007 , among others . His son George Harris is founder and guitarist of the British band The Raven Age , which appeared as the opening act on Iron Maiden's The Book Of Souls World Tour 2016.

style

Steve Harris is respected in the metal scene for his fast and complex game. He plays a Fender Precision Bass . The Fender company has created its own signature model for him , which bears the crest of the West Ham United football club. The use of flatwound strings instead of the usual roundwounds is unusual for a metal bassist . Harris strikes these with his fingers, not with a pick . His bass he reinforced with a Trace-Elliot - preamplifier , a C-1 audio-FR707-amp and Marshall -4x12 "- boxes .

British Lion side project

On September 24, 2012, Steve Harris released his first solo album British Lion . Even at that time, Harris saw the whole thing as a side project with a band character, than as a real solo project. Since then a band has solidified around Harris, vocalist Richard Taylor, guitarist Grahame Leslie, guitarist David Hawkins and drummer Simon Dawson. On January 17, 2020, the band's second album followed, entitled The Burning .

Others

“Up the Hammers” or “Up the Irons” - these are the sayings of the supporters of West Ham United - “Up the Irons” has meanwhile established itself as a greeting within the Iron Maiden fan base. He still wears sweatbands with the United banner at Maiden appearances, and the Iron Maiden football shirts, in which Iron Maiden competes with his own team in charity tournaments, are very similar to those of West Ham United. His passion for the club is also documented on the back of the Somewhere-in-Time cover.
