The cover artwork was done by Melvyn Grant , who was also responsible for the artwork for Fear of the Dark , Virtual XI and Death on the Road .

Emergence

After the tour activities ended in 2009, the band members withdrew to work separately on ideas for new songs. In November and December 2009 the musicians got together for a three-week songwriting session in Paris , while most of the new material was being created. After the turn of the year 2009/2010, the band went to Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas to rehearse the songs and then start recording. During this time, other songs were created, including a. The Alchemist as well as most of the lyrics. After about two weeks, the basic tracks for all instruments and vocals were recorded. After the guitar tracks were overdubbed , the final mix began at The Cave studio in Los Angeles . There took Bruce Dickinson on the last vocal passages, because he had not yet written the lyrics in the Bahamas finished part. Overall, Iron Maiden finished work on the album a month earlier than planned.

Reviews

Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia notes that Iron Maiden is closer to the artistic legacy of their triumphant 2000 reunion with the album than with the two previous albums . The band shows that they have understood how to give all fans what they want and expect. Yan Vogel from laut.de sees the album "somewhere between self-reference and innovation as well as cliché and trademark". Although all the tracks came up with “cool ideas”, some of them had musical lengths. The online magazine whiskey-soda.de characterizes the music as "great melancholy melodies in a framework of classic metal and progressive rock, loosened up by old-school riff rock" that get better every time you listen. Robert Fröwein from the Austrian online magazine stormbringer.at takes a critical view of the album and describes it as a "lukewarm infusion of the significantly stronger, more meaningful predecessor", the album is not good enough for the "greatest metal band on the planet".
