The Final Frontier was the third studio album by the US metal band Keel , released in 1986 .

background

The published 1985 album The Right to Rock that of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons produced was, Keel was a moderate success succeeded. The album was number 99 of the US album - charts reached and 20 weeks can keep in the hit list. With The Final Frontier , the band aimed for greater success and recruited Gene Simmons for production.

Most of the recordings took place in the Electric Lady Studios in New York , but also in the Baby-O-Studios and the Village Recorder in Los Angeles . On the previous album , Simmons had worked as co- songwriter , but for The Final Frontier the band waived his help with songwriting. The album was created with the help of some guest musicians. The singer of the band Power Station at the time , Michael Des Barres , lent his voice to the song Raised on Rock , and Joan Jett contributed the rhythm guitar for the same song. Jamie St. James, vocalist for Black 'n Blue , sang backing vocals for Rock and Roll Animal , Gregg Giuffria provided backing vocals for No Pain no Gain , and Mitch Perry, guitarist for the McAuley Schenker Group , played rhythm guitar on Tears of Fire .

In 2009, The Final Frontier was re-released by Geffen Records and offered on CD and download.

reception

The album was released on June 7, 1986 and did not miss the intended goal: It reached number 53 on the Billboard 200 and for the first time also a chart listing in Europe , namely number 83 on the British album charts. Eduardo Rivadavia, reviewer at allmusic, wrote of The Final Frontier that the album was a slight improvement on its predecessor and achieved gold status (in the US) thanks to the cover version of Because the Night and the power ballad Tears of Fire . Nevertheless, much of the Keel material is "clichéd 1980s pop metal" with "interchangeable lyrics and muscular riffs" . Even the guest contributions of well-known musicians could "hardly keep interest in the album alive" . The singles Because the Night , Tears of Fire and The Final Frontier , which were released from the album, could not record any chart successes.
