The McAuley Schenker Group (MSG for short) was a hard rock band that existed from 1986 to 1993. Its founders and main members were the Irish singer Robin McAuley and the German guitarist Michael Schenker .

Career

After putting his own band Michael Schenker Group on hold in 1985 for personal and health reasons, the former UFO and Scorpions guitarist Michael Schenker was looking for an equal partner for his next project. He found him in the former singer of the Irish band Grand Prix, Robin McAuley, who at that time worked with the rock formation FAR Corporation founded by German producer Frank Farian and the cover version of the Led Zeppelin piece " Stairway to Heaven " in England and Germany had a top 10 hit. In order to be able to keep the abbreviation of his old band, MSG, now well known in the music scene, Schenker offered McAuley to fill the first part of the band name with his last name. McAuley agreed, after some thought.

In the further course of the year McAuley and Schenker put together a high-quality music band with guitarist and keyboardist Mitch Perry, bassist Rocky Newton and drummer Bodo Schopf, which made their live debut in 1986 on the German version of the Monsters of Rock Festival then recorded the album Perfect Timing , which was released in 1987. This was followed by a Japan tour as the opening act for Whitesnake .

Following a tour as the opening act for Def Leppard in 1988, Mitch Perry was replaced by guitarist and keyboardist Steve Mann, the band returned to the studio and recorded their second album Save Yourself , which was released in 1989. After Perfect Timing had little commercial success due to the lack of live support at first, the McAuley Schenker Group still managed to appeal to a larger number of buyers with this work , among other things through the success of the single Anytime in the US charts. Nevertheless, there were the first cracks within the band when in the course of 1990 first Schopf and later Mann and Newton left the band because of disputes with the management. McAuley and Schenker hired bassist Jeff Pilson ( Dokken and Dio ) and drummer James Kottak ( Michael Lee Firkins , Kingdom Come , Warrant , Scorpions ) to replace them . For the keyboard parts of the next album, Jesse Harms was hired as a studio musician.

Although the third album, MSG, was already finished in the summer of 1991, the American record company refused to release the album, first to wait for the developments on the rock market, which was currently very much in motion. McAuley and Schenker then went on a promotional tour with Shark Island guitarist Spencer Sercombe, during which old and new pieces were performed in purely acoustic versions. The response was so good that even an acoustic EP called Nightmare The Acoustic MSG was released, which included the single Nightmare and some new and old pieces in acoustic guise.

In the spring of 1992, MSG was finally published. Meanwhile, McAuley and Schenker had drifted apart, worn down by the constant management friction. In order to fulfill contractual obligations, they released the album Unplugged live in 1993 after their last tour , a recording of the performance in Anaheim , California as part of the acoustic tour in 1991. After that, the band broke up.

Michael Schenker returned to UFO for a short time, but has been concentrating again on the newly formed Michael Schenker Group since 1995. Robin McAuley began a solo career and also contributed songs to various samplers as a guest singer. He was a guest singer on the Michael Schenker Group's album Tales of Rock 'N' Roll - Twenty-Five Years Celebration , released in 2006 . From 2006 to 2011 McAuley was the singer of the American rock band Survivor . During Schenker's "Temple Of Rock" tour in 2012, McAuley performed again with Schenker at 26 concerts.
