Anaheim is a city in Orange County , California , about 40 kilometers southeast of Los Angeles , and has a population of around 352,497 (2017 estimate, US Census Bureau).
history
First settlement
The city emerged in 1870 from a settlement founded in 1857 by 50 families of German immigrants who came from San Francisco . They purchased from the owners of the "Rancho San Cajon de Santa Ana" - Juan Pacífico Ontiveros and his wife Martina - a 1165 acre (about 471 hectare) plot of land for $ 2 per acre to create a wine-growing area. A larger part of these first settlers originally came from the area around Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Middle Franconia , the first settler is said to have been Daniel Krämer from Bavaria . The part of the name “-heim” still indicates the German origin of the founders, “Ana”, on the other hand, refers to the nearby Santa Ana River .
Establishment in agriculture
Most of the settlers were artisans and had little knowledge of viticulture. In 1876 even ten Polish aristocrats and artists had moved to the town. On an area of 16 hectares, a school was then built around the first building, the future center of the town; in 1870 and 1871, the building of the local newspaper - the Anaheim Gazette - and a hotel followed. Until 1884, when viticulture had to be stopped due to increasing crop damage , the settlement was the largest wine producer in California. The loss of wine was compensated relatively quickly by growing walnuts, limes and oranges.
Oranges, the Klan and Disneyland
At the beginning of the 20th century , Anaheim had developed into a center of agriculture, many of its residents lived from growing citrus fruits , especially oranges, which is also where the name of Orange County is derived. Between 1924 and 1925 four members of the Ku Klux Klan were represented on the city council. Of the 10,000 inhabitants at that time, a good 300 joined the clan, which, as a Protestant association, was primarily against Catholicism and counterfeiters and - the country was in the middle of Prohibition - turned against illegal distillers . Armed clansmen patrolled the streets, and up to 20,000 people from all over the country came to the city, which is considered the model settlement of the clan, for an event organized by the secret society .
After a bribery action by the opposition movement Unison, Service, Americanism (USA) , through which they had obtained the list of all secret members in the city - including police officers and other city employees -, with the help of two of Anaheim's three newspapers , in 1925 the clan's four city council seats are regained.
In 1954, the Walt Disney Company in Anaheim, run by Walt Disney , acquired 65 hectares of land that had previously been used to grow walnuts and oranges. Just one year later, on July 17, 1955, construction work was completed and the Disneyland Resort opened as the company's first theme park.
Late 20th century
According to a 1970 census by the United States Census Bureau , around 9.3% of Anaheim's residents were Hispanic and 89.2% were white. In the 1990s, the city expanded and designed the Anaheim Resort , which even today next to the Disneyland Resort nor the local Convention Center ( Anaheim Convention Center ) and the sports stadiums Honda Center and Angel Stadium hosts.
