Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford (born January 31, 1987 in Anaheim , California , United States ) is a British musician , songwriter and front man of the folk rock band Mumford & Sons .

Life

Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford was born in Anaheim, California , the son of John and Eleanor Mumford, the current leaders of the Christian church organization "Vineyard Churches UK and Ireland" . At the age of six months, his family moved back to Wimbledon , England , where the family originally came from. Together with his future band member, keyboardist Ben Lovett, he attended King's College School before he decided to study Classical Studies at the University of Edinburgh . However, he left the university in 2006 after studying for a year and moved to London, where he performed as a solo artist in a small pub called “Bosun's Locker” and met other musicians such as Noah and the Whale , Cherbourg and Laura Marling .

He then went on tour for Marling as a drummer , where he met the rest of his band Mumford & Sons . Since they all played in different bands and had similar tastes in music, they decided to form their own band with Mumford's lyrics, which he had already written during his time in Edinburgh, and other new songs written during the tour.

After Marcus Mumford was with Laura Marling until around Christmas 2010, he was engaged to British actress Carey Mulligan , who was almost two years older than him, since July 2011 . The two married on April 20, 2012 and had a daughter in September 2015. The second child was born in September 2017.

Quote

"When you write a song, sitting naked on your bedroom floor, it's the most private thing you can do. I'm very English, and we don't talk about emotions publicly. Then you do the most public thing possible: You record it and ask people to play it on the radio. It's pretty weird when you hear people singing that private moment back at you. "

- Marcus Mumford at Rolling Stone

"I haven't heard anything that sounds as good as that. I don't mind them. A lot of fucking people hate them in England. I think it's the waistcoat and facial hair. I don't mind them. I think that guy's got a good voice ... I wish I had written that song. That's the biggest compliment I can pay whoever wrote that. "

- Noel Gallagher on the song The Cave , written by Marcus Mumford
