Rosalind Chao (Chao Jyalin - Chinese Zhào Jiālín) (born September 23, 1957 in Anaheim , California ) is an American actress of Chinese origin.

Career

The Chinese-born actress, who was born as Chao Jyalin in Anaheim, California, adopted a western-sounding stage name like many other Asian colleagues and appears in public as Rosalind Chao. She has been married to the English actor Simon Templeman since 1989 , with whom she has two children.

Chao celebrated her first acting success in the early 1980s in M * A * S * H as Soon-Lee Hahn , the future wife of Corporal Maxwell Klinger alias Jamie Farr . Chao also starred in several episodes of the 1983 spin-off After Mash .

In the following years she focused on her career as a television actress and starred in various series.

In the series Spaceship Enterprise - The Next Century and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , she plays Keiko O'Brien , a Japanese botanist who, as the wife of chief engineer Miles O'Brien , founds a school on the DS9 space station and works there as a teacher. By working on the two series, Chao gained greater prominence and subsequently appeared in supporting roles in several movies. In 1997 she played in Wim Wenders ' At the End of the Violence on the side of Bill Pullman and Andie MacDowell and in 1998 she appeared in the drama Behind the Horizon with Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr. in front of the camera.

In the drama series OC, California , she played director Dr. Kim of Harbor High School. She also played the role of Pie Pie in the 2003 film Freaky Friday .

In 2007, Chao starred in the film Nanking, about the Nanking massacre .

In Germany , Chao is mainly dubbed by Iris Artajo and the actress Ulrike Möckel .
