The Federal Research Center for Agriculture (FAL) was a research institution in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection . As of January 1, 2008, the FAL institutes were divided between the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute , the Julius Kühn Institute and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute . The previous institution was the Agricultural Research Institute (LFA) , which began on November 1 , 1947; the decision was taken by the Economic Council of the United Economic Area on December 18, 1947, and from September 1, 1949, the Agricultural Research Institute (FAL)as an institution of the state of Lower Saxony, also in Braunschweig. On July 1, 1966, the FAL became the responsibility of the federal government and from January 1, 1977 it was called the Federal Research Institute for Agriculture (FAL).
The FAL was concerned with the provision of scientific bases about agriculture for politics and the creation of new knowledge for agriculture. The institution was based in Braunschweig in the northwestern district of Völkenrode . It operated a total of twelve institutes at three other locations in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein (as of 2007). The director with the title "President" was elected every two years from among the institute directors. The last President of the FAL was Hans-Joachim Weigel , Vice President Axel Munack (2007).
Research areas
- The Federal Research Center for Agriculture was divided into four areas with corresponding institutes:
- Soil / plant (plant nutrition and soil science , plant cultivation and grassland management , agroecology )
- Animal (animal nutrition, animal breeding, animal welfare and animal husbandry)
- Technology (technology and biosystem technology, industrial engineering and building research)
- Agricultural economics ( business administration , rural areas, market analysis and agricultural trade policy )
There was also an interdisciplinary institute for organic farming in Trenthorst ( Schleswig-Holstein ).
