Mariensee is a village in the Neustädter Land, part of the Neustadt am Rübenberge in Lower Saxony, about 6.5 km to the north .

geography

From a geological point of view, Mariensee lies on a low terrace that was created by erosion processes in the (original) leash . You can see this well in today's landscape: between Mariensee and Wulfelade , on the right of the road, a good 8 m down into the lowlands that already belong to Wulfelade. This terrain level is available up to about the middle of the village. In the village itself, the “Bergstraße”, the “Wittingsbach” and the small Wolfsberg show this small sand ridge. To the north and west, open fields dominate, interrupted by smaller wooded areas. Meadows and fields are mainly to be found to the east in the Leinen lowlands, while the monastery forest extends south to Empede .

history

The name of the place was initially Catenhusen , which seems to go back to a medieval knight or liege named "Cato". The house of this knight is located on the present site of the Institute for Farm Animal Genetics of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute opposite the monastery church. The first written mention is under the name lacus sancte Marie for the year 1207.

According to legend, a statue of Mary was washed up when the Leine flooded, which was considered a divine symbol and led to the renaming of the place as Mariensee.

Around 1600 there were two Meier farms and six Kötner farms in the monastery village . A forge and a watermill also dominated village life. Between 1820 and 2000, the population of Mariensee increased from around 400 to around 1200 people. The greatest increase was due to immigration after the end of World War II .

In 1748, the poet Ludwig Hölty (“Practice always faithful and honest…”) was born in Mariensee as the son of the local pastor Phillipp Ernst Hölty. His poetry is shaped by the rural surroundings of the place. In the Mariensee Monastery , the Hölty-Stube, a small literary memorial, commemorates the life and work of the poet. There is a memorial stone for Ludwig Hölty next to the monastery. The main street in Mariensee bears his name.

On March 1, 1974, Mariensee was incorporated into the city of Neustadt am Rübenberge.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Mariensee was designed by the former legal advisor (Neustadt a. Rbge.), Author and heraldist Klaus Jürgen Kortmann .

Mariensee coat of arms
Blazon : Split between blue and red ; on the right, above three silver wavy lines, the silver Mother of God , whoholdsthe child on her right armand a staff in her left; on the left a silver buffalo horn . "
Justification for the coat of arms: The figure of Mary in the front blue field should indicate the monastery. The Madonna from the 15th century is used, which is located in the ladies' gallery of the monastery church. At the same time, the rare opportunity is taken here to graphically represent a place name. Mariensee has a so-called " talking coat of arms ": The wavy lines under the statue of the Virgin symbolize the lake, which is said to have existed in the past. In order not to give the impression that the proposed coat of arms is a purely ecclesiastical coat of arms, the draftsman gave a reference to the founder of the monastery and namesake of the place, Count Bernhard II von Wölpe , in the back field with the Wölper buffalo horn , because until then (around 1200) the place was called "Catenhusen".
