Helstorf is a northeastern district of the city of Neustadt am Rübenberge in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony .

geography

Helstorf lies close to the Leine River and is connected to the city center via the L 383 state road to Mandelsloh and the L 191.

history

The place, which was previously called Helstorne , is mentioned for the first time in a document from Pope Hadrian IV from 1154, which lists the tax burden in favor of the Corvey monastery . The place itself is much older, however. Eleven barrows from around 3000 BC BC, in which apparently only "village superiors" were buried and one of the largest urn fields in this region - around 1200 BC. BC - in the area of the "Krähenberg" (sports field area) testify to a very early settlement. Construction workers discovered a (sub) settlement that was probably already abandoned around 100 AD during the leveling work of the second sports field in 2003. The Helstorf archaeologist Klaus Gehrken mapped the relics of houses that were now buried under the grass of the soccer field and recovered around 350 artefacts .

On September 9, 1324 Helstorf received prominent visitors. The former rulers Duke Otto von Braunschweig and Lüneburg (Otto 'der Strenge') and Count Adolf VII zu Schaumburg met in one of the Helstorf inns. This secret meeting apparently served to agree an alliance for the war against the bishopric of Minden (also called 'Fürstbistum Minden').

In the second half of the Middle Ages (500–1500 AD) Helstorf also seems to have played an important role in trade policy. The goods coming from overseas and northern Germany made their way from Bremen via the Weser, Aller and Leine to Hanover - the Hanoverian goods such as B. beer, linen fabrics and later also the "Lindener Kalk" the opposite way. The numerous bends, silting up and other obstacles such as the stone barrier (“waterfall”) in Neustadt led to transport from a “navigable point” overland. This trade route, known as “Leinweg” (from “Leinen”), whose landmark was the “Obermühle” in Abbensen, first documented in 1202, came across the line behind this place, where the transported goods were reloaded from the barges onto wagons. But also local products (e.g. linen and woven fabrics, grain, wood, fruits, honey and beeswax) made their way to Hanover from here. Hobby researcher Jürgen Gödecke suspects this unspecified goods transshipment point (= "navigable point") in Helstorf.

Here Gödecke favors the extension of the “Klinkenberg” road, which comes onto the leash. According to tradition, the "Klinkenberg" is also the mining site for the clay that the house builders used to smear the wattle in the framework of their houses and barns ("Klinken" = small, pricked balls of clay).

From 1814, the village, which at that time had around 220 inhabitants, was granted special privileges by the Royal Court of Hanover. Due to the particularly fine, white sand occurring in the area of the 'Lohberg', of which Helstorfer carters had to deliver 8–10 loads to the royal family every year, the royal treasury largely exempted the town's citizens from paying taxes. The court silver was cleaned with the sand, the floors - primarily those of the kitchens - sanded in and freshly written documents were scattered. Several citizens also earned a few groschen with the quills they used for writing.

With the inauguration of the Leine Bridge on May 5, 1894, the ferry service over this river, which has been documented since 1310, ended.

The census of September 13, 1950 showed that 577 inhabitants lived in 162 households in the place. On March 1, 1974, Helstorf was incorporated into the town of Neustadt am Rübenberge.

coat of arms

The design of the municipal coat of arms of Helstorf comes from the Neustadt artist and trade teacher Fritz R. Sackewitz . The approval of the coat of arms was granted by the district president in Hanover on December 2, 1961.

Helstorf coat of arms
Blazon : Divided by a wavy line ; in the silver upper field a gold-decorated , blue judge's hat over two crossed blue gloves . Below is a box ferry in blue. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The hat and gloves are included in the coat of arms as insignia of the patrimonial judge Johann Hemme (died: 1703), whose monument is to the northwest of the church. The box ferry symbolizes the former ferry service over the line. The ferry house still stands today.

However, the wooden tower that was built around 1660 has been preserved from her. The St. Peter's bell in it dates from 1489. A baroque baptismal angel has been preserved in the church.
