Monument topography Federal Republic of Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The monument topography of the Federal Republic of Germany is a multi-volume series of publications that was recommended to be drawn up by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Culture of the Länder . Its aim is to completely record the architectural monuments in Germany and to present them in a uniform manner. The first volumes appeared in 1981 and 1982 in Bremen , Hesse and Lower Saxony .

history

The concept of monument topography was tried out in the early 1970s , roughly at the same time as the reorganization of monument law by the federal states. It replaced the concept of large inventories that had been pursued since the 19th century , which provided for a very detailed recording and description of cultural monuments and their individual elements, including room furnishings. This concept failed because the concept of monument had expanded considerably since the 19th century and the extensive work required for large inventories was no longer affordable for the large number of monuments.

The results of the testing were included in the resolution of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in 1978 to document “Architectural monuments in the Federal Republic of Germany”. The title “Monument Topography” was decided in 1980 at the 65th Conference of Heads of the State Monuments Offices. In order to put the decision into practice, the monuments offices of the federal states drew up guidelines which they published in 1981. In the same year the first volume of the monument topography appeared. In practice, however, these cross-Germany guidelines have not prevailed; instead, monument offices in individual federal states have drawn up their own guidelines, which are based on the general guidelines, but differ from one another. This means that the individual topographies of the federal states also differ from one another. This even led to the assessment that there was no uniform series.

Principles

In the monument topography, the cultural monuments are presented according to their type, distribution and structural relationship: "In a meaningful combination of text and illustration, it has to explain the monument structures both of the topographical unit to be processed and that of the individual cartographic representations." In addition, the monument topography pursues an educational approach Approach: "The general public should be made aware of their responsibility for the historical heritage and obliged to preserve it."

The aim of this work is a comprehensive reproduction of the cultural monuments in Germany. Both individual monuments and area monuments ( ensembles ) are shown. All positions should be identifiable according to Gauß-Krüger coordinates . This aim is served by topographic maps on a uniform scale of 1: 50,000, parcel-like also on a scale of 1: 5,000 and in exceptional cases on a scale of 1: 10,000. Each volume contains an overview map of the respective federal state in which the area shown is marked. The individual volumes are preceded by essays that introduce historical and topographical information into the respective area of study. The volumes usually end with an index , bibliography and glossary .

"Disappeared", ie destroyed or lost monuments and - with a few exceptions - ground monuments are not included .

Manifestation

The volumes appear cross-border in a uniform DIN A4 format and a black cover with the cover photo of a representative monument from the respective volume. The signature of the volumes is also uniform across national borders. Monuments are differentiated by the following color signatures:

Nonetheless, it was not possible to design the volumes uniformly across national borders and they differ considerably in terms of both the selection of objects and the type of presentation. This is caused both by the different legal bases and the different recording traditions of the individual countries. Other changes seem rather arbitrarily to break through the originally intended uniform appearance, such as a blue cover in Baden-Württemberg or a three-volume "introduction" to the monument topography of the city of Freiberg, which completely exceeded the usual format.

As a rule, the volumes appear under the responsibility of the locally responsible monument protection authority (State Office for Monument Preservation), which also acts as the publisher .

For comprehensive coverage, a volume of around 800 volumes is expected, which could be achieved around the year 2100 at the current speed of publication. Given the relatively slow progress of the project, it is questionable whether this will ever happen. On the one hand, there are now electronic forms of publication that seem far more suitable for this. On the other hand, it can already be seen that some of the cultural monuments presented in the older volumes have been changed or removed, but new ones have also been added because more recent objects that were not yet classified as cultural monuments at that time are now rated as such. The older volumes no longer show the actual inventory of monuments.
