The inventory of Lower Saxony's cultural monuments goes back to the 19th century. Already at this time, the state preservation of monuments regarded the scientific recording of cultural monuments and their publication as a prerequisite for their protection and for conservation measures.

Hector Wilhelm Heinrich Mithoff put with his works such as archive for Lower Saxony's art history. A representation of medieval works of art in Lower Saxony and the immediate vicinity (1849–1862) and art monuments and antiquities in Hanover (1871–1880) from the middle of the 19th century onwards the basis for the inventory.

From the end of the 19th century to the 1920s, the volumes coined by Carl Wolff appeared , Die Kunstdenkmäler der Provinz Hannover .

The topographies published in the 1930s were also titled The Art Monuments of the Province of Hanover and were coined by Arnold Nöldeke .

Today's inventory is carried out within the framework of the monument topography of the Federal Republic of Germany recommended by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany , the publication of which was decided in 1971 by the Association of State Monument Preservators in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The individual volumes in the book series on architectural monuments in Lower Saxony have a three-part structure. The introduction presents the development of the area in terms of building history. In the cartographic part, the location of the cultural monument in the topographical situation is recorded. This is followed by a descriptive text and image area. The monuments are characterized and their historical, artistic or urban value is explained.

The individual volumes of the book series are available in print. Almost all volumes have been online since 2019. The Heidelberg University Library offers this digitized form in its Heidelberg historical holdings .
