Ernst René Anselm Nyberg (born February 13, 1946 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish diplomat .

Life

He grew up bilingual Finnish / Swedish in Helsinki; he also learned German early on . He attended the German School Helsinki , where he passed both the Finnish Abitur and the German school-leaving examination in 1965 . He completed his studies in political science at the University of Helsinki with a master's degree.

Nyberg then accepted a position in the Finnish Ministry of Education and in the fall of 1971 moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He learned Russian and dealt with the content of the Soviet Union . In 1971 and 1972 he stayed in Leningrad for language studies . From 1973 to 1975 he worked at the Finnish Embassy in Moscow and from 1976 to 1977 at the Finnish Consulate General in Leningrad. He then was deputy secretary of the Finnish-Soviet Economic Commission until 1979. He then returned to the Foreign Office and worked in the political department. He was concerned with the Nordic security policy. During a sabbatical at Cornell University , he completed a book on the subject, which he published in 1984. Nyberg then became head of the Department of Security Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In this function he campaigned for the lifting of the restrictions on Finnish sovereignty that had arisen as a result of the Paris Peace Conference in 1946 . In autumn 1990, during the collapse of the Soviet Union , Finland unilaterally declared the end of restrictions on the Finnish armed forces .

Nyberg was Finland's ambassador to Austria at times . From 1992 to 1995 he was head of the Finnish CSCE delegation. From 2000 to 2004 he was ambassador to Russia and from 2004 to 2008 in Germany . In 2008 he left the diplomatic service and until 2013 he headed the Finnish Industry East Office, which represents the interests of Finnish industry in Russia.

Nyberg is married and has three daughters. He is a Major in the Reserve of the Finnish Armed Forces.
