Arnold Nöldeke (monument conservator)
Arnold Wilhelm Paul Otto Nöldeke (born July 12, 1875 in Essen ; † November 25, 1964 in Hanover ) was a German architect , building researcher , monument conservator , and state building officer in Hanover.
Life
Arnold Nöldeke attended Lyceum I in Hanover. With a talent for drawing and painting, Arnold Nöldeke had “initially turned to architecture and the fine arts” during his studies, but then to art history and, above all, archeology. His areas of interest also ranged from "history and technology to geographic research and ethnology". In 1909 he received his doctorate at the University of Erlangen with a thesis on the mosque of al-Husain in Kerbela . During his studies he became a member of the Corps Macaro-Visurgia in Hanover .
Nöldeke mastered both the Turkish and the Arabic language . In 1902 he went to excavations in Mesopotamia for the first time under Robert Koldewey , "to Babylon to uncover the Ishtar Gate and the processional street ". From 1931 and 1939 Nöldeke headed the Uruk / Warka excavations . However, between the excavation campaigns, he regularly returned to the monuments in his homeland.
From 1915 Nöldeke worked for 25 years under the provincial conservators Heinrich Siebern and Hermann Deckert on the inventory of the art monuments in the province of Hanover . There “he deciphered weathered gravestones, followed up the building history, sought to clarify connections and data and to grasp the values of the works of art”. The "medieval cross stone as an object of historical observation [was] equivalent to a Babylonian brick relief."
Arnold Nöldeke was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
