geography

location

The river Hase flows through the former district area coming from Osnabrück through the towns of Bramsche , Bersenbrück and Quakenbrück and leaves it there in the direction of the district of Cloppenburg. The Mittelland Canal runs south of Bramsche .

Neighboring areas

At the beginning of 1972 the district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Cloppenburg , Vechta , Wittlage and Osnabrück (all in Lower Saxony), the district of Tecklenburg (in North Rhine-Westphalia ) and the districts of Lingen and Meppen (both again in Lower Saxony).

history

After the annexation of Hanover in 1867 by Prussia , the Bersenbrück district was formed in 1885 from the former Hanoverian offices of Bersenbrück , Fürstenau and Vörden and the city of Quakenbrück . From 1911 to 1933 Hermann Rothert was district administrator. He wrote numerous historical writings, including about the Bersenbrück district.

On July 1, 1972, the district, which last had 90 municipalities, was combined with the districts of Osnabrück, Melle and Wittlage to form the new district of Osnabrück. At the same time, numerous communities in the district were merged. The former district still forms the district court district of Bersenbrück today .

On March 1, 1974, Vörden , Hörsten and Hinnenkamp, three communities in the old district of Bersenbrück, were reclassified from the district of Osnabrück to the district of Vechta, where they became part of today's community of Neuenkirchen-Vörden .
