history
The historic Hanseatic city of Fürstenau was first mentioned in 1344 as "Vorstenowe". The Osnabrück prince-bishop Gottfried von Arnsberg had the first part of the fortress of today's castle built in order to assert his claim to this area against the county of Tecklenburg . Around the castle is settled Ackerbuerger , and the castle was by further expanding centuries the residence of the Osnabruck region Prince. In 1642 Fürstenau received city rights. In 1647, Fürstenau was besieged by Field Marshal Hans Christoph von Königsmarck for ten days in the Thirty Years' War . Michael Wilhelm Kobolt von Tambach had to hand over the place to the Swedes on Whitsun. In Fürstenau in 1532 the Paderborn, Osnabrück and Münster prince-bishop Erich von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen died .
On November 10, 1938, pogroms against Jews also broke out in Fürstenau as a result of the Reichskristallnacht . The house of the Jewish butcher Frank was stormed by the local SA and SS. On the upper floor of the building (today Schwarzer Weg 3) there was a prayer room that was devastated. The Torah scroll as well as furniture, prayer books and other items were destroyed and thrown out of the window onto the street. In the street, the men with the unwound Torah scroll posed for a photo before it and the destroyed objects and furniture were set on fire. After the end of the Second World War , proceedings against those involved in the pogrom began between 1949 and 1951. The mayor Fritz Werkenthien, who was in office in 1938, was also interrogated in August 1949. He responded to the allegations made against him with: “I can't remember.” On June 18, 1951, the proceedings under the Act of Impunity of December 31, 1949 were terminated set.
On July 15, 2014, Gunter Demnig laid the first 24 Stolpersteine in Fürstenau. On March 3 and December 7, 2015, another 13 stumbling blocks were laid.

Centuries have shaped the historical cityscape. This image is particularly shaped by the Prince -Bishop's Osnabrück Castle Fürstenau , which dates back to the founding time - today the seat of the Fürstenau joint administration and, since 1817, the town's Roman Catholic parish church . The restored north-east bastion underlines the former importance of Fürstenau as a military bulwark in the Middle Ages.
In addition to the castle, the old city gate "Hohes Tor" as well as the market square with the old town hall and the Protestant St. George's Church are worth seeing. The remains of the city's medieval pillory can be found there.
The large Fürsten Forest holiday and amusement park is being planned on the northern outskirts, part of which (off-road terrain) is already in operation.
