The Lingen Station is a transportation hub in the city of Lingen (Ems) . It has a total of nine tracks, of which tracks 1 and 2 are used for passenger traffic. The bus station is located on the forecourt for links to other modes of transport; there is also a taxi rank as well as parking and bicycle parking spaces.

history

Freight traffic at Lingen train station in 1974
The new underpass at the train station

With the opening of the Hanover West Railway in 1856, Lingen was also connected to the railway network. A train station was built east of the then city, which was the end point of the railway line initially coming from Emden from May 2 to June 23 , before the gap between Lingen and Osnabrück was closed. Lingen was only one of several similarly large small towns in the Emsland , but the location about halfway between Hanover and Emden led to the establishment of the central workshops of the Western Railway. For this reason, the Lingen train station had extensive track systems from the start, which were expanded with later extensions of the repair shop.

From 1904 to 1952, a few hundred meters north of the station was the Lingen small train station of the narrow- gauge Lingen – Berge – Quakenbrück small railway , which also carried rollbock traffic and therefore had a connection to the state railway. Further sidings led north and south-west of the station to two ports, agricultural cooperatives and other companies.

For passenger traffic, there was initially a narrow center platform on track 2 next to the house platform on track 1 , which could only be reached by crossing track 1. This was shut down in the 1970s due to safety regulations, so that from then on the trains stopped in both directions of the actually double-track line on track 1, which often led to delays. Therefore, a new platform for track 2 was built in 2009 (see below).

After the repair shop was shut down in the 1980s, the track systems were gradually reduced in line with falling demand, and the last tracks in the factory halls were dismantled in 2003.

In 2004, the listed reception building was renovated for a total of almost 500,000 euros and then housed the DB travel center and some offices, a restaurant and a larger kiosk. Currently (as of January 2016) the restaurant and kiosk are empty.

Since 2007, a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel under the track system has connected the areas on both sides of the railway system. The western confluence of this underpass on Bernd-Rosemeyer-Straße was named “ Theo-Lingen- Platz”; To the east, the confluence ends on the site of the former Lingen repair shop between Halls I / II and IV on Kaiserstraße.

In 2009, a new side platform for track 2 was built on the site of the former track 3 ; the remaining tracks were swiveled. Access to the new platform is through the bicycle and pedestrian tunnel. Then the old house platform was renovated and raised; Furthermore, an elevator was put into operation between the tunnel and the new platform. Since then, barrier-free access to trains in both directions has been possible. After public criticism of the small size of the new platform, it was widened in 2011.

The bus station was also rebuilt and enlarged. After the construction freeze in 2009 due to a financing dispute between the district of Emsland and the bus operator Meyering as a property developer, the "alternative solution" originally only planned for the summer holidays with a provisional bus station at the New Harbor and a replacement stop in front of the train station was implemented Autumn extended. In addition to the stops, the new bus station also includes a VGE information pavilion and was completed in early 2011.

On November 1, 2016, the city of Lingen acquired the station building and the associated 675  property from Deutsche Bahn. She plans to renovate the building and restore the historical appearance by demolishing later extensions.

On July 3, 2020 at 3:14 p.m., an ICE on ICE line 1680 between Munich main station and Norddeich-Mole stopped at Lingen station for the first time , which runs during the summer holiday season. The train in the opposite direction to Munich does not stop in Lingen, however, as an additional stop is planned in the much smaller Papenburg .

The train station is located on the eastern edge of Lingen city center at Bernd-Rosemeyer-Straße 18. East of the train station are the halls of the former Lingen repair shop on Kaiserstraße. The former goods handling area in the northern area of the train station is now used as a dance, sports and cultural center; the pedestrian zone with numerous shops in the city center is just a few minutes' walk away. In 2007, the Lookentor shopping arcade was opened on the former post office south-west of the train station.

In terms of rail operations, the station is located at km 239.8 on line 2931 (Hamm Pbf – Emden), on which the course book line 395 runs in this area .

Lingen station continues to be a freight station for single-wagon traffic for Deutsche Bahn. A class 294 or 295 locomotive is stationed on site, which picks up the wagons from the Osnabrück Rbf hub and delivers them to and around Lingen and vice versa. In addition to the Lingen train station itself, the Hanekenfähr freight station and the fiber works in the south, the Lingen connecting railway (only rarely when needed) and the Emsland oil refinery in the north are served in the urban area . Further service trips lead to Emsdetten and Dörpen , with a wagon crossing to the EEB in the neighboring Meppen station to the north .
