coal-fired power station
The STKW energy Dörpen GmbH & Co. KG , a subsidiary of EnBW and the Swiss energy company BKW Energy , planned the construction of a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of approximately 900 MW and an efficiency of 46 percent in Dörpen by 2015. BKW had the Project already pursued since 2007, EnBW got involved in 2009. The approval process was initiated at the end of June 2007. Commissioning was initially planned for 2013, but was later postponed to 2014 and finally 2015. The power station should be fired with imported coal.
The project was the cause of a controversy between the local government and the citizens' initiative "Clean Energy". While the citizens' initiative feared harmful effects on the life of the population in the area and questioned the ecological sense of the project, the local government promised itself above all new jobs during the construction and operating phase as well as economic incentives in the region.
A high point of the disputes between the municipal administration and the citizens' initiative was the residents' demand for a citizens' survey on the construction of the coal-fired power station. With a petition from 2,019 adults - a majority of residents eligible to vote in federal elections - the initiative asked for an official survey, which was rejected by the CDU majority in the local council. The petition was supported by over 5,000 German citizens who took part in the action Germany writes Dörpen von Campact .
On December 9, 2009, EnBW announced that it would give up the project. The reason given was that the previously envisaged customer for the heat, the Nordland paper mill , wanted to build its own thermal power station. The citizens' initiative welcomed the construction of the gas power plant with combined heat and power by the Nordland paper mill.

The RE 15 Emsland Express , which runs from Münster to Emden, stops every hour in Dörpen. For inland navigation, the Dörpener Schleuse is important as the start and end point of the coastal canal .
The 'Güterverkehrszentrum Emsland' (GVZ) is located in Dörpen. It is considered the most powerful freight transport center in Lower Saxony and is trimodal (water / rail / road). As of 2013, 500 people work there. The main user and client is the shipping company UPM nortrans. It controls the inbound and outbound logistics of the UPM Nordland Papier factory in Dörpen.
