Wettrup is a municipality in the Lengerich municipality in the Emsland district in Lower Saxony .

geography

Geographical location

Wettrup is about 20 km east of the Ems and the city of Lingen, almost exactly between the cities of Haselünne and Fürstenau . It is a small village with around 650 inhabitants and an area of 13 km² on the eastern edge of the Emsland district, right on the border with the Osnabrück district. A foothill of the Wiehengebirge extends to the east and the Hahnenmoor to the north . The next larger town is Lingen about 25 km to the west. Meppen is 30 km northwest and Cloppenburg 40 km northeast of Wettrup.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities in the north are the town of Haselünne and the community of Dohren in the joint municipality of Herzlake , in the east the communities of Berge and Bippen , both in the joint community of Fürstenau in the district of Osnabrück , and in the southwest the community of Handrup .

origin of the name

The village appears for the first time under the name Wethonthorpe in the register of the Werden monastery from 890. What exactly this word means cannot be said with absolute certainty. In any case, there are three versions.

One comes from Schriever, who wrote a history of the Lingen district. He derived Wethon from the Anglo-Saxon Widon , which means as much as to graze , and thus came to the interpretation of willow village .

According to another version, the name is derived from the old German word vitu = woe , which describes a light tree population in which you can graze .

Finally, the betting race is associated with the Anglo-Saxon word wet , which means low, humid . The basic word denotes a settlement or a village. So it could mean a settlement in a relatively wet area.

This last interpretation appears to be the more plausible one because, in fact, the betting race is quite low and in the past has repeatedly had to contend with floods; but especially because the neighboring village of Handrup , which is actually higher up, is called a high-lying village by its name. In this respect, the two villages form a couple, as it were: Handrup the higher village and Wettrup the lower village.

Business

The Eikhof business park borders directly on the busy B 402, so that the road connection can be described as optimal. Since the municipality of Wettrup is also directly adjacent to the district of Osnabrück, commercial business connections can easily take place here across the district. In addition to the B 402 in north-south direction, a very good supra-regional connection is also ensured via the L 60 in east-west direction. The new Eikhof industrial park has a total size of 4.25 hectares and is being sold by the Wettrup community to companies willing to relocate at favorable conditions and in a tailored manner as required. If necessary, it can be enlarged.

Residential development

Adjacent to the village center, a new area was released for residential development in the mid-1990s. In the “Brökers Kamp” construction area, construction work began on the third construction phase in 2020.

Sports

The sports club Wettrup 1968 eV is the sporty flagship of the small town. The club members are mostly betting racers, but there are also many hand runners playing in the club. The first senior football team is currently playing in the third Emsland Süd district class. In addition to football, the SV Wettrup also offers badminton and volleyball and has a shooting group.

traffic

Wettrup is on the B 402 between Fürstenau and Haselünne . The motorway junctions Holdorf and Osnabrück Nord / Bramsche of A 1 are about 45 km from Wettrup removed. The junction of the A31 Lingen / Lohne is about 35 km away.

societies

As in many other village communities in the Emsland, a large part of the activities in Wettrup is determined by club life.

  • Local and cultural association Wettrup
  • Catholic women's community Wettrup
  • Catholic rural youth race
  • Low German theater group Wettrup
  • Wettrup dance group
  • Senior group wet race
  • Sports club SV Wettrup eV

fire Department

The volunteer fire brigade Wettrup was founded in 1942. But there is said to have been a fire brigade syringe here much earlier, alarmed by the ringing of bells and then pulled into action by a team of horses. The fire station , directly to the east of the parish hall, includes 2 vehicle boxes, a training room, a small workshop and the associated sanitary facilities. This building complex (community and fire station) was built in 1996 after the previous building had burned down the year before. During the fire, only the vehicle box of the fire fighting group vehicle LF 8 could be saved from the flames. An MLF on a MAN chassis has been part of the vehicle fleet since 2017. In the same year, the LF 8 was converted into an equipment vehicle (Mercedes-Benz chassis from 1991). The previously used GW-Sonder equipment trolley on a VW LT chassis (built in 1977) was auctioned with the highest bidder and now belongs to a classic car enthusiast from the race. The fire brigade currently has 34 active comrades and 8 honorary members in the age department.
