history

Lorup is first mentioned in the year 834 as "Ladorpe" in the tithe register of the Corvey monastery . At that time it was tenth owned by this monastery. Like the entire Hümmling , Lorup later came to the Niederstift Münster , in 1803 to the Duchy of Arenberg-Meppen , 1810/1811 to the French Empire , in 1815 to the Kingdom of Hanover and with this in 1866 to Prussia .

The strength of the ash soil suggests that it has been continuously cultivated for 1500 years. The thousand-year history of the place is also reflected in the carved signposts. Other contemporary witnesses from the past are the old windmills (Walke and Eschmühle), which have lost their wings over time.

In 1892 a farmer discovered the Lorup gold find in Loruper Moor , a gold hoard with gold jewelry from the Bronze Age around 600–700 BC. It was about two golden arm rings, flat spirals and hollow rollers that were bought by the Osnabrück Municipal Museum.

In 1998, Lorup hit the headlines as part of the investigation into the murder of Christina “Nelly” Nytsch. The eleven-year-old girl was abducted on March 16, 1998 . Five days later her body was found near Lorup, as well as a knife as a murder weapon. The enlightenment led to the largest genetic test in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany at the time. Ronny Rieken was convicted as a perpetrator.

Origin of name

The name Lorup is made up of the two syllables Lo- and -rup. Lo indicates Loh, a Low German term for light or low wood. Something comparable can be found in the naming of the Dutch town of Tynaarlo in the neighboring province of Drenthe . There the ending lo also stands for forest or wood. The syllable La in the place name of the Emsland municipality Lathen has the same origin. The ending -rup is derived from the Old Saxon (Old Low German) word thorp, Old Norse torp, Danish trup. The term Thorp or Thorpe can be found mainly in England and in the modified forms across Northern Germany to Scandinavia (cf. Süderbrarup , uspr. Syndräbrathorp; Lørup, originally Løtherop, Danish). The spelling of the place name changes from Ladorpe (834 AD) via Lorype and Lorupe to Lorup (hdtsch.) And via Lodorpe and Lothorpe to Lo th orpe (ndtsch). The majority of the population still speaks a North Lower Saxon dialect of the Low German language. In this dialect the name of the village is Loorpe .

coat of arms

On a green background there is an oblique left red and gold double bar, accompanied by a silver ploughshare at the top and a silver six-spoke wheel at the bottom.

The green ground clearly symbolizes the name of the municipality of Lorup, which, according to the oldest spelling in the tithing register of the Corvey monastery from the 9th century, is “Ladorpe” and can be etymologically interpreted as “settlement in the woods”. The red and gold bar is reminiscent of the earlier connection to Corvey shown in the tenth register. The ploughshare and the wheel refer to the two traditional pillars, agriculture and trade, which are still important for Lorup today. The number of wheel spokes corresponds to that of the flywheel of the first power generator, which today is a monument to the local history opposite the Perk machine factory.

Culture and sights

Heath, forest, meadows and moor shape the landscape. A network of marked hiking trails leads through the landscape of the Hümmling . A holiday home area is called "Dannenkamp". There are opportunities for football, tennis, bowling, fishing, hiking, horse riding, etc.
