Süderbrarup ( Danish Sønder Brarup ) is a municipality in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein . It is the administrative seat of the office of the same name .

geography

Süderbrarup is located on the fishing peninsula . It is a sub-center and a recognized resort . In Süderbrarup there was a radium-containing spring, which was the destination of pilgrimages in pre-Christian times , but has dried up since the stadium was built.

In addition to the central town, the municipality includes the (partly historical) villages of Bedstedt ( Bedsted ), Billwattbrück ( Bilvadbro ), Brebel ( Bredbøl ), Brebelholz ( Bredbølskov ), Brebelmoor, Brebelscheide, Dollrott ( Dollerød ), Dollrottfeld ( Dollerødmark ), Dollrottholz ( Dollerødmark ) , Dollrottmoor, Dollrottroy, Dollrottwatt ( Dollerødvad ) Gaarwang ( Gaardvang ) Justrup, upper land Loitstraße ( Løjtgade ) Süderbrarupfeld, Süderbrarupholm ( Holm or Sønderbrarup-Holm ), Süderbraruproy ( Sønderbraruprød ) Süderbrarupwesten ( Sønder Brarup Vest ) Süder field Pleistrup ( Plejstrup ) and Winkelholm ( Vinkelholm ).

history

The municipality has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, from which several burial mounds have been preserved. Particularly important, however, is the Kummerhy hill grave west of the Thorsberger Moors, which was first opened in 1861 and was built around 650 BC. BC and is surrounded by a stone circle. There are a total of 22 burial mounds in the area.

The Thorsberger Moor , from which many objects of daily use and weapons as well as decorative objects such as jewelry etc. a. were recovered, was - as the name suggests - consecrated to the Germanic god of war Thor as a place of sacrifice. It is assumed that Thorsberg was one of the most important places of worship in the region - the fact that the old name Thorsberg was not forgotten even in Christian times should indicate this. Most of the finds are kept in the Schleswig-Holstein State Museum in Gottorf Castle. About 2000 urns from the period up to AD 400 were excavated on the market square. The large number of used, jagged weapons that were sunk in the bog in the 4th century is interpreted as an indication of fighting that took place in Jutland during this time and may be related to the migration of the peoples . It is conceivable that the military conflicts were important in the context of the emigration of most of the Angles to Britain .

The place Süderbrarup was first mentioned in 1231 as Syndräbrathorp ( brathorp : village on a slope). On the other side of the Oxbek there is accordingly also Norderbrarup , which was the more important place until the 19th century. An interpretation based on the personal name Brá is also possible .

On March 1, 2018, the communities of Brebel and Dollrottfeld were incorporated.

Brarup Market:

Brarup Market

The Brarup market , which takes place on the last weekend in July, is the largest rural fair in Schleswig-Holstein. It was first mentioned in 1593 and celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1993.

The market dates back to the 16th century when people gathered at the site's sacred spring around July 25th, the feast day of James . From this a rural market developed over the centuries and finally a folk festival with showmen and artists. Today it is a fair with rides and stalls, but there is still the traditional cattle market on the penultimate market day.

Economy and Infrastructure

Süder-Center, September 2007

Süderbrarup is of great economic importance for the fishing region . There are many retail and service companies in the center. In the spring of 2006, a shopping center, the so-called “Süder-Center”, was opened near the town center (as the crow flies to the town center “Germaniaplatz”: 400 m).

The Thorsberg barracks of the Bundeswehr, which was named after the Thorsberger Moor, existed in Süderbrarup until the 1990s . After the closure, a reception camp for refugees from the Yugoslav wars was temporarily set up in the buildings . Today there is a hardware store on this property.
