history
Esgrus was first mentioned in 1352. The place name is probably derived from Es-rus ( pile of stones where ash trees grow , from Old Danish æski for ash wood ).
The St. Marien Church from the 12th century is one of the oldest stone churches in fishing. The brick tower dates from the 15th century. There is a burial chamber for Gut Rundhof under the tower .
On May 2, 1945, at the end of the Second World War , Heinrich Himmler and his entourage stayed in Ellgaard near Atzbüll ( Lage ). Himmler had come to the Flensburg area via the so-called Rattenlinie Nord to take part in the last Reich government in Flensburg - Mürwik . Johannes Festesen from Ellgaard reported in his diary about Himmler's stay in Ellgaard: “There was a knock on our bedroom window and with a voice dying with awe we heard him say:“ The Reichsführer and Supreme Commander of the SS, Heinrich Himmler. ”I had no choice than to let him in. Himmler stood on the lawn in front of our house and greeted me with the words: "You should take me in." I said: "Yes, I must." Then he again: "Yes, you have to." ... At the other Tomorrow he disappeared again. ”Himmler's next stay was Hüholz at Ausacker . On the Flensburg government Himmler was not involved, which is why he soon further south into the Lower Saxony region fled, where he was captured by British soldiers, and shortly thereafter in the May 23, 1945 Lueneburg suicide committed.
politics
Since the municipal elections in 2013, all eleven members of the municipal council have belonged to the WGE electoral community .
coat of arms
Blazon : "Under the blue head of the shield, next to each other a waning silver moon and a six-pointed silver star, in gold a rooted green ash."
The first part of the community name can mean ash . Therefore, the main character of the coat of arms is an ash tree. The green color and the roots of the tree are also to be understood as a sign of a lively rural community that is still aware of its village roots. The moon and star in the head of the shield are the symbols of Nieharde, who is superior to the parish of Esgrus . The Harden were Danish administrative and judicial districts from the Viking Age . Esgrus belonged to the Nieharde until 1867. The shield colors are those of the Duchy of Schleswig .
Partner municipality
There is a partnership with the municipality of Katzow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
economy
Many commercial and service companies have settled in the community.
Traffic development
The present part of the municipality Grünholz had a train station on the Flensburg circular railway from 1886 to the early 1950s .
Attractions
The list of cultural monuments in Esgrus includes the cultural monuments entered in the list of monuments of Schleswig-Holstein.
There are two manors near Esgrus, the Brunsholm farm (also called "Herrenhof") and the Frauenhof farm. Gut Frauenhof stands on the site of the razed Kappeshoi Castle. The representatively designed three-sided courtyard in Frauenhof can be reached via an avenue with a half-timbered gatehouse. According to a legend, three old noble ladies with the strange names Tan Nails, May Hues and Tekkel Jerrekoks, who once lived there, are the founders of the church in Norderbrarup , because they wanted to save the time for going to church in Struxdorf .
