Weesby ( Danish : Vesby , partly also Vestby or Veseby ) is a municipality in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein . Bögelhuus, Weesbydamm and Weesbyfeld are in the municipality.
geography
Weesby is located about 18 kilometers west of Flensburg on the Danish border.
history
The place name Weesby was first documented as Wesebu in 1451 and means settlement near a swamp to old Danish. wesa and old north. veisa for swamp and by for settlement or village. The place Weesbydamm (Danish Vesbydam or Vestbydam ) means pond of Weesby and goes back to the Danish Dam ( South Jutland æ dam ) for pond.
The place name Bögelhuus (Danish Bøgelhus , Jütl. Bøl'hus ) was first mentioned in 1238 and means house on the Böllau (Danish Bølå ). The latter goes in old Danish. bekla in the meaning of stepping crooked (cf. altnord. bjagleitr for crooked) as an earlier name of the Scheidebeck. Bögelhuusfeld (Danish Bøgelhusmark , Jütl. Bølhus'mark ) was accordingly documented in 1875 as the field of Bögelhuus .
politics
Community representation
Of the nine seats in the municipal council, the WGW A community of voters has five seats since the 2013 local elections and the AWGW 90 community of voters four.
coat of arms
Blazon : "In green under three golden alder leaves next to each other a silver anvil."
Weesby is located in the eastern part of the former Karrharde . The historical seal of this old administrative body shows five deciduous trees with a spherical crown. In the coat of arms of the neighboring parish of Medelby , which also belongs to the Karrharde , these trees are concretized as alders . In recognition of the fact that Weesby belongs to the parish of Medelby, the municipality has adopted this form of representation. The place name is of Danish origin and means "village in the swamp". The alder, however, is the typical tree species in swampy, boggy terrain and is still often to be found in the municipality today. So it makes sense in the coat of arms of the municipality. The number of alder leaves refers to the three districts Bögelhuus ( Bøgelhus ), Weesbydamm ( Vesbydam or Vestbydam ) and Weesbyfeld ( Vesbymark or Vestbymark ). The anvil is reminiscent of the old village smithy, which fulfilled an important function for the entire rural catchment area of the community.
Economy and Infrastructure
The community is predominantly agricultural.
The federal highway 199 runs south of Weesby from Flensburg to Niebüll . State road 1 runs through Weesby from Süderlügum to Wallsbüll .
