history

Gelting was first mentioned in 1231 in King Waldemar the Victor's Earth Book as Geltyng . At that time, Gelting Castle was the center of a sparsely populated crown estate, which probably served primarily as a hunting area. The Katharinenkirche was built from brick around 1300 , the parish was initially connected to the Nieharde , to which the parishes of Sörup , Sterup , Steinberg , Quern and Esgrus also belonged. In the 14th and early 15th centuries, several aristocratic estates such as Buckhagen , Roest and Düttebüll were formed , which were administratively separated from Gelting. Gelting itself became a noble estate in 1494 when King Johann left it to the Ahlefeldt family , who in turn returned Törning to the king.

From then on, the east of Angelns was dominated by the nobility, and the Gut Gelting played an important role here. The Geltinger Church, which became Evangelical-Lutheran after the Reformation , was the center of the largest parish in Angling , to which the present-day communities of Gelting, Nieby , Kronsgaard , Hasselberg , Pommerby and Rabenholz as well as partly Maasholm (the Oehe estate, which was incorporated in 1928) belong.

In 1710 the Meierhof Priesholz became an independent estate. In 1789 serfdom was lifted on Gut Gelting and the parceling of the property began, although it remained an administrative unit. As a noble estate, it formed its own lower court district until 1853, when the Ostangler estates were combined to form the Kappelerharde.

In 1864 the Duchy of Schleswig became the Prussian Province of Schleswig-Holstein . From 1867, Gelting was under the new district court in Kappeln and under the Flensburg district . The parish of Gelting, which was previously divided into the estates of Gelting, Düttebüll, Priesholz and Oehe, has now been divided into twelve small rural communities and four manor districts reduced to the main farms and their immediate surroundings. In the area of what is today the rural community of Gelting, the rural communities of Suterballig, Lehbek, Kattrott, Wackerballig and Stenderup were located next to the Guting estate. In 1928 the manor district of Gelting and Suterballig merged to form the rural community of Gelting, to which Lehbek, Kattrott and Wackerballig were also joined in 1938. In 1970 Stenderup was incorporated.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In blue under a radiant golden half-sun, a golden plow with silver plowshares."

The community of Gelting was not created until 1928 by amalgamating the manor district of Gelting with several rural communities of the parish of the same name . After a checkered history of ownership, Sönke Ingwersen, who came from North Friesland and had a great fortune in the East Indies, acquired the Gelting estate. He, who was ennobled as "Baron von Geltingen" the following year, inherited rule and title first to his son, then to his sister's son, the progenitor of the current owners. The plow in the coat of arms of Gelting is taken from the family coat of arms of the barons of Geltingen. To distinguish it from other coats of arms with the same figure, at the suggestion of the Kiel State Archive , the Geltinger coat of arms was supplemented by half the radiant sun , based on the model of older city coats of arms, in which celestial bodies were often added to the stereotypical castle (e.g. Schleswig) . The colors yellow and blue are those of the Schleswig region.

Culture and sights

The list of cultural monuments in Gelting includes the cultural monuments entered in the list of monuments of Schleswig-Holstein.

St. Catherine's Church

The church, consecrated to St. Catherine of Alexandria , was built around 1300 and was rebuilt in the classicist style around 1793 . The altar area was redesigned by the Flensburg sculptor Johann Christian Schmädl into a five-axis display wall, the center of which is a multi-figure crucifixion scene from the late medieval carved altar by the Lübeck carver Claus Berg . Above is the organ, the work of which was designed by Marcussen & Søn in 1904 . The nave retained its medieval shape with a flat ceiling. The inventory includes a triumphal cross and a carved baptism from the Gudewerdt workshop from the 17th century.

Gut Gelting is surrounded by a moat and is one of the oldest estates in fishing . The mansion is based on a typical semi-detached house . It was later expanded with two extensions to form a three-wing complex with a courtyard . The manor house is privately owned by the Barons von Hobe-Gelting and not accessible to visitors.

Mill Charlotte

The “ Charlotte ” earth dutchman mill in the neighboring municipality of Nieby was built by Gut Gelting in 1826 and served both to drain the Noors and to grind grain. Today it is used as a holiday home. It is the entrance gate to the Geltinger Birk nature reserve and is located on the edge of the beach to the Flensburg Fjord.

Others

  • A half-timbered house from the 19th century is located in Hunhoi .
  • The large stone grave in Lehbek is a grave complex from the Neolithic Age.

Economy and Transport

Gelting was originally a predominantly agricultural place, today it is a rural central place with pronounced trade and service companies. As a climatic and Kneipp health resort , tourism is also an important source of income. The tourist offers are mainly in Wackerballig and on the Geltinger Bucht .

From 1965 to 1999 a car ferry line to Faaborg , Denmark was maintained, which had to be discontinued after the abolition of cross-border duty-free shopping. The Gelting pier is now used as a sports harbor.

The most important traffic connection is the Bundesstraße 199 , the so-called Nordstraße from Kappeln via Flensburg to Niebüll . Other roads are only of local importance.

Gelting had a railway connection from 1886 to 1952 through the meter-gauge northern line of the Flensburg circular railway . The north road largely follows its route.
