About this picture

Großenwiehe ( Danish : Store Vi ) is a municipality in the district of Schafflund in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in Schleswig-Holstein . Loftlund, Großenwiehe, Wiehekrug ( Vikro ), Schobüll ( Skovbøl , jütl. Skofel ), Schobüllhuus ( Skovbølhus , jütl. Skofelhuus ), Oxlund ( Okslund ) and Nordwiehe ( Nørre Vi ) are in the municipality.

Geography and traffic

Großenwiehe is located about twelve kilometers southwest of Flensburg in the Schleswig Geest . The federal highway 7 runs to the east from Flensburg to Schleswig , to the southeast the federal highway 200 from Flensburg to Husum and to the north the federal highway 199 from Flensburg to Niebüll . The state road 12 connects the B 5 in Bredstedt via Großenwiehe with the B 200 in Wanderup . Another cross-connection runs through Großenwiehe: Landesstraße 14 connects the B 199 in Wallsbüll with the B 200 in the Wanderuper district of Kragstedt. The district of Schobüll is connected to the road network via the L 14.

history

The stone church of St. Laurentius was built in the 12th century. Großenwiehe was first mentioned in writing in 1462 (lib. Cens.). The place name goes back to Old Danish wighæ to Old Norse vīgi as a description for a fortification or fortification, whereby the suffix -vi (in Danish) or -wiehe (in German) has become due to the omission of the intervowel g . The name probably refers to an inland dune or an earth wall east of the place, which represents a naturally blown sandall, which may have been used for defense purposes. The name could possibly also refer to altn. refer to vē for a sacred site or viði as a term for forest. Schobüll (Jutland Skofel ) was first mentioned in 1493 (Rep. Dipl.). The place name is made up of Danish. skov (old Danish. skōgh , cf. oldn . skōgr ) for forest and -bøl for settlement together.

The municipality was created in 1970 by merging the municipalities of Schobüll ( Skovbøl ) and Großenwiehe.

The Danish school (Store Vi Skole) built in 1949 was also used as a church until 1999.

In 1972 the Grossenwiehe-Lindewitt Trade and Industry Association was founded. It is one of the oldest rural trade and industry associations in the district.

economy

With its commercial and service operations, the municipality in the southern district takes on central local functions.

politics

Community representation

From previously 20 seats in the municipal council had CDU since the municipal election 2008 nine seats, the SSW and the voter community KWGG four each and the SPD three seats. In the election on May 26, 2013, only 17 seats were awarded, the reduction being entirely at the expense of the CDU, which now only has six seats.

coat of arms

Blazon : “Lowered divided by gold and blue. Above a standing, silver armored fork harrier, below an oat fruit stand in confused colors. "

The divided shield of the coat of arms of Großenwiehe expresses the two districts of the municipality. The coat of arms figure in the upper half of the shield represents a consecration , a species of bird of prey that has become rare . Since the name of the bird is "Wieh" in Low German, it found its way into the coat of arms as a popular interpretation of the place name. Even today, despite their declining population, consecrations are typical birds of prey in the region. However, the scientific derivation of the community name is different: Old Danish “Wighæ”, meaning “fortification”, “ Schanze ”, denotes an earth wall east of the village, which is, however, of natural origin. The oat stalk indicates that agriculture used to be the real source of income for the inhabitants and is still an important source of income today.

Culture and sights

Maypole in Großenwiehe

The list of cultural monuments in Grossenwiehe includes the cultural monuments entered in the list of monuments of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The community's cultural monument is essentially the church with its churchyard.

A legend reports that this church in Großenwiehe was once built by a giant, while at the same time another giant also built a church in Medelby . Since they only had one hammer to cut the stones, they threw the hammer to each other when needed. In one of the throws they damaged the tower of the Wallsbüller Church, which is why it now only has a low, separate bell tower. - Another legend reports that the giant from Großenwiehe once had a quarrel with the neighboring giant in Handewitt . Once the giant von Handewitt got so angry that he hurled a large stone as far as Grossenwiehe, which you can still see there. - In the well-known legend about the origin of the ox islands , which are not far from Flensburg, the next larger city, a giant also plays an important role. - At Großenwiehe there is also the Oxlundmoor where the legend of the Nis Puk from the Lindewitt farm ends.

Personalities

Inside the church of Großenwiehe

The lawyer and royal Danish diplomat Thomas Balthasar von Jessen (1648–1731) was the son of the pastor in Großenwiehe and grew up in the pastorate.

The Altona President Matthias Jessen (politician, 1641) and the reform pedagogue Peter Petersen (1884–1952), whose pedagogy is also used in the school of the same name in the community, were born in Großenwiehe .
