geography

Geographical location

The municipality of the city of Bredstedt extends along the transition from Schleswigschen Geest to the North Frisian Marsch landscape area at the southern foot of the Stollberg in the historic Nordergoesharde . The Bredstedter Bach flows through the village into the upstream Bredstedter Koog , which was diked around 1520. The coastline (surf zone) of the North Frisian mudflats of the North Sea is now in about five kilometers away in west southwest.

history

Bredstedt around 1895

Bredstedt was first documented in 1231 Erdbuch by the Danish King Waldemar II. As Brethaestath mentioned. The place name means roughly broad site (cf. Old Norse breiðr ) with a number of equivalents in Swedish, Low German and English. The place is historically in the Nordergoesharde, which was counted to Idstedtsyssel, the southern of the three Syssel of southern Jutland and later Duchy of Schleswig . In 1477 it was still close to the sea, had a port and was elevated to a town . It was also detached from the parish of Breklum in the late Middle Ages , but the parish of Bredstedt remained limited to the patch and later to parts of newly won kings in the west.

The Nordergoesharde belonged to the Flensburg office and always remained with the royal share in all the divisions of the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Bredstedt was important as a market place for a wide area. As the center of the Harde , it surpassed Breklum. Due to the high degree of self-government, the Harde was more and more often referred to as the Bredstedt landscape in the 18th century, which also proves the importance of the central location. In 1785 the Harde was released from the Flensburg office and converted into an independent Bredstedt office. However, the Husum bailiff soon took over the business in Bredstedt.

The office of Bredstedt was expanded in 1853 by the upstream Köge and the Mirebüll estate. After the Duchy of Schleswig was annexed to the Kingdom of Prussia, it finally became part of the new Husum district . In the succession of the old Harde, Bredstedt was the seat of a local court from 1867, which existed until 1975. In 1887 the station was built on the Marschbahn . On October 8, 1900, the town was granted city rights.

The upswing, which had already resulted in the granting of city rights, continued in the following years. A Frisian homeland association was founded in 1902. In the same year, Bredstedt received a public library, the predecessor of today's city library. In the following year the Friesen-Courier , the local newspaper, was founded. It was published until 1942. As with the previous dikes in the Bredstedter Bucht, the economic basis also spread through the dike in the Cecilien- and Sönke-Nissen-Koog in the second and third decades of the 20th century.

Severe crises at the beginning and end of the Weimar Republic alternated with a golden age in the middle. However, they also increased the citizens' expectations of political representation, which, however, could not be met. Urban “mismanagement” was repeatedly criticized. A severe mayoral crisis finally gave the NSDAP the necessary basis, which led to the early blossoming of National Socialism in the Bredstedt area. Even before the beginning of the global economic crisis, in February 1929, a local group established itself. In March 1933 the NSDAP was elected by 50.2% of Bredstedt residents. Hitler's government was even supported by 68.4 percent of the population. In 1934 a Reich labor camp was set up in Bredstedt.

During the war years 1939–45, five houses were destroyed by fires. A total of 15 people died here. The total number of those killed amounted to 340 or 11% of the population.

In 1954, the Effi Briest film adaptation of Rosen im Herbst was filmed in Bredstedt, among other places.

In the meantime, a technical school for training candidates for the Federal Border Guard was set up in Bredstedt . This school closed in the 1990s. The former training site on Dbodumer Strasse has now been converted into the Central North Friesland business park. From the tradition as a BGS location, the office of a federal police station is still located here today.

Until April 1, 2008, Bredstedt was administered on a full-time basis. Since then, the city and the municipalities of the former offices of Bredstedt-Land and Stollberg have formed the Central North Friesland Office with its administrative headquarters in Bredstedt.

Culture and sights

societies

Bredstedt has a well-developed association system. These include several sports and music clubs.

sports clubs

The most important sports club in the city is the Bredstedter TSV . It offers grassroots and competitive sports in the main sports such as B. football, handball, athletics and others. He mainly uses the sports facilities on Süderstraße and the gym on the site of the former BGS school in the Mittleres Nordfriesland business park .

There is also the TC Bredstedt . The club's tennis facility is located outside the center in the Quickhorn forest. It can be reached via the arterial road towards Dbodum .

In the SAV Bredstedt , the anglers pursue their hobby.

The oldest local sports club is the Bredstedter Ringreitergilde. It was founded in 1783 and is one of the oldest sports associations in the North Friesland district.

Another traditional club is the Bredstedter Schützenverein , which was founded in 1878. The shooting range is located at the far end of Westerstrasse.

The Bredsted IF from 1947 (Bredsted Ungdoms- og Idrætsforening) promotes Danish sport and youth work through cultural and sporting activities.

Music clubs

A successful marching band is part of the Bredstedt Craftsmen's Association. There is also a traditional men's choir with the Bredstedter Liedertafel from 1842 . There is also the opportunity to make music in the trombone choir , which was formed by the local Evangelical Lutheran parish.

Other clubs

The trade and industry association and the tourism association Bredstedt and the surrounding area are committed to successful urban development . The Association for Bredstedter History and Cityscape Maintenance , founded in 1990, is dedicated to the historical heritage and maintains the Bredstedter archive in the community center and an exhibition room.

Buildings

The list of cultural monuments in Bredstedt includes the cultural monuments entered in the list of monuments of Schleswig-Holstein.

The center of the city of Bredstedt is today extremely heterogeneous from an architectural point of view. The oldest line of development extends along Norderstrasse, Hohle Gasse, Markt and Osterstrasse. The market forms the historic town center.

The building that should be emphasized in terms of style is, among other things, the building that dominates the front of the market square, the Sparkasse / City Hall from the Wilhelminian era . The northern part of the building dates from 1893/94. The city administration was housed here until 2008. The two-story brick building is stylistically based on the neo-Gothic style. The southern part of the building was built in 1930 as an extension on the corner of Markt and Bohnenstrasse. It was built for the savings and lending bank in Bredstedt , which now uses the entire building. This extension was designed by the Flensburg architect Guido Widmann . In the design he included the neo-Gothic facade elements in a weakened form.

Other stylistically eye-catching buildings on the market are Wolf's old private pharmacy and the home of what was once the largest Bredstedt entrepreneur, the tobacco manufacturer Preisler. The latter forms a small courtyard together with the former and now restored factory building.

At the beginning of Osterstraße there are two buildings on the opposite side that dominate the entire row of houses due to their two-story design. It is the business building originally built as a post office building on the south side and the North Frisian House on the north side of the street. They are both atypical for the row of houses that extend beyond the eaves instead of the gable-independent construction. The former post office is a typical north German brick and clinker building . The bailiff's house in front adapts to the facade of the neighboring house, but only has a one-story hipped roof.

Other architecturally striking landmarks outside of this oldest development phase are above all the Nordfriisk Instituut (previously elementary school) from 1871, the Bürgerhaus (formerly middle school), which was built in 1913 (both located on Süderstraße) and the former agricultural school (today's official building) on Theodor-Storm-Straße.

Also worth seeing are the station building with the Bredstedt water tower and the Clementshus ; the Danish senior housing (built in 1720, restored in 1987).

The Bredstedt telecommunications tower on the Stollberg, which belongs to the municipality of Bordelum, is characteristic of the modern architecture of the late 20th century .

Regular events

  • The market days are an annual event. They usually take place on weekends and offer a program of music and entertainment until late in the evening. Market days are the city's biggest event.
  • Children's festival: In addition to sporting activities for children, there is also a festival tent.

Economy and Public Infrastructure

Bredstedt is classified as a sub-center in the Schleswig-Holstein regional planning . It fulfills this function for the surrounding communities in the western central part of the North Frisian mainland including the Hallig Nordstrandischmoor upstream here . The assigned, superordinate central locations are the cities of Husum (middle center) and Flensburg (upper center).

The economic structure in Bredstedt is characterized by various SME companies . Most of these are owner-managed businesses. The industry composition can be described as diversified. Companies of regional importance are two traditional specialist dealers from the meat processing and timber and building materials sectors. The latter also operates a DIY store and garden center.

In Bredstedt there are many ways to meet basic needs. There are also branches of VR Bank Nord eG, HypoVereinsbank , and Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse in the city .

There has been a change in retail in the past. Numerous grocery stores have moved from the city center to the outskirts. A few years ago, only the REWE Group relocated with a discounter ( Penny ) and a hypermarket. In the course of 2016, branches of various retail chains moved into these properties. This is the Danish bed warehouse and a Markant consumer market. The discount store branches ( Aldi Nord , Netto Marken-Discount ) are conveniently located on the southern outskirts. At the northern entrance to the village, in the immediate vicinity of the recently developed residential areas on both sides of Tondernschen Strasse, coop eG initially set up a large-scale consumer market ( Wandmaker ). The closure of this location was announced at the beginning of 2017 for October of the same year.

The inner city area is dominated by smaller boutique clothing stores and other service providers (banks, insurance companies, lawyers, sporting goods stores, tea shops, etc.). There is also a department store in the main shopping street. The local post office has been set up here since the former post office was closed.

traffic

Motorized private transport

The municipality is crossed in a north-south direction by the federal road 5 in the section from the federal border with Denmark near Tondern to its transition to the federal highway 23 near Heide . It forms the backbone for journeys by national traffic to the North Frisian city. In Bredstedt, the state roads branch off from it towards Ockholm (via Reußenköge) (L 11), Viöl (via Drelsdorf) (L 28), Wanderup (via Goldelund) (L 12) and Stadum (via Lütjenholm) (L 4) .

Due to the increasing traffic numbers along the north-south axis, a relocation of federal highway 5 is planned (bypass Bredstedt – Hattstedt).

Rail transport

Entrance building of the Bredstedt train station

The Bredstedt train station is on the Marschbahn . It is the transfer point for upstream / downstream bus services within the Schleswig-Holstein local transport network (NAH.SH). The station is a regular stop on the RE 6 regional express line, which runs every hour between Westerland and Hamburg-Altona . The former DB Regionalbahn Schleswig-Holstein (now DB Regio ) has received the currently valid operating license from the 2017 to 2025 timetable . The Sylt Shuttle plus trains also regularly stop at the station .

Bus transport

Bredstedt is directly connected to the associated regional center of Flensburg by a regular bus service (bus route R125). The R120 regional bus runs parallel to the Marschbahn between Husum and Langenhorn . Both lines meet at the Bredstedt train station and form the transfer station there, both in the higher-level rail traffic as well as a downstream on- call bus service to the surrounding communities. There are also various school bus connections and the bus route to Schlüttsiel (1029), which is important for tourism .

Since August 1, 2019, all bus routes in Bredstedt have been operated by the Husum-based company Rohde Verkehrsbetriebe .

Public facilities

The administration building of the Central North Friesland Office

As a sub-center for the central part of North Friesland, Bredstedt plays a central role. The administration of the Central North Frisia Office is located here. Next door is the Bredstedt Green Center. Several institutions are located here in a joint education and advice center. These include a branch of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture, the office of the district farmers' association and a technical school for agricultural professions (formerly the Higher Agricultural School).

The Nordfriisk Instituut on Süderstrasse
The Friisk Hüs on Bohnenstrasse

The Nordfriisk Instituut in Bredstedt has been the central scientific institution for the Frisian language, culture and history since 1965 . It maintains an extensive library ( reference library ) with works on (North) Frisian, but partly also Schleswig-Holstein, Danish and Sorbian history and culture. It is supplemented by an archive on the emigration of many North Frisians, especially to North America. As a publisher, the institute publishes numerous books on North Frisia and also offers lectures. The institution is supported by the North Frisian Institute founded in 1948.

The town library is located in the community center on Theodor-Storm Straße . The facility is complemented by a Danish library. The latter is operated by the Danish Central Library for South Schleswig .

education

Educational institutions in Bredstedt are the elementary school on Gartenstrasse and a community school on Süderstrasse. Both are operated by the Mittleres Nordfriesland School Association. The Hauke-Haien-Förderschule was recently integrated into the community school as a separate support center (FöZ) 'learning'.

Since the city is a small center of the Danish minority in Schleswig-Holstein, the Danish School Association for Southern Schleswig runs a comprehensive school here.

Further educational institutions are a total of four kindergartens. These include a Waldorf kindergarten, a Danish-speaking and two German-speaking kindergartens. The latter are operated by the ADS-Grenzfriedensbund , the Danish-speaking one by the Danish School Association for Southern Schleswig .
