history

Garding with the Süderbootfahrt around 1895
Garding station around 1900

Garding probably existed with a similar name before the church was founded in 1109. The place itself was first mentioned by name around 1187 in a document from the Archbishop of Lund . 1231 mentions the Waldemar- Erdbuch Giaethningheret , the Gardingharde . In 1300 the place was mentioned as Gherdinghe , and the spellings Gerdingen (1438) and Gardingk (1509) appeared. These different spellings can also be related to the development of colloquial language in Garding and on Eiderstedt.

There has been a weekly market since 1575 , which is held every Tuesday until today.

The city charter was Garding - awarded by Johann Adolf - October 12, 1590, about the same time as Husum  (1603) and Tonning  (1590).

In 1867 Garding became the seat of a district court. This remained until 1959 and was replaced by the Husum District Court.

For centuries Garding owned a port that shaped the cityscape and determined economic life. As a port city, Garding had trade connections to England and other countries through the ports of Katingsiel and Tönning almost until the beginning of the 20th century after the north and south boat trips were completed around 1612 . The port itself was filled in in 1912.

The Husum – Bad St. Peter-Ording to Garding line was commissioned in 1892, and the extension to St. Peter was completed by June 24, 1932.

On January 1, 2006, the city of Garding gave up its freedom of office and joined the Eiderstedt office .

Ranjet Biermann (CDU) was re-elected honorary mayor for the 2013-2018 election period. However, like his mandate, he resigned from his office on January 19, 2015. As a result, the city council elected Andrea Kummerscheidt for the first time in the 425-year history of the city as mayor of Garding on February 26, 2015.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on December 30, 1963.

Blazon : “In blue, accompanied by a golden Communion chalice below, the golden nimbly silver lamb of God, holding the shouldered victory flag with his right forefoot: On a golden rod ending in a cross at the top a silver banner ending in two corners with a red, continuous cross . "

Garding, a suburb of the former Everschop countryside in the middle of the Eiderstedt peninsula, was elevated to a town in 1590. The first city seal from 1589 shows the Lamb of God. The origin of this seal image, which is actually of church origin and indicates a Salvator patronage (Salvator = Savior = Christ), is unknown. The traditional patrons of the Gardinger Church are Bartholomäus and Christian. Instead of the usual cross, the flag above the lamb contains the letters SOG (probably: Sigillum Oppidi Gardingensis). Until 1963 the city used the seal image without a coat of arms. The heraldic revision moved the chalice into the base of the shield, which had been freed from the ground.

The coat of arms was designed by the Brunsbüttel heraldist Willy "Horsa" Lippert .

flag

The flag was approved on September 6, 1965.

The Garding flag is blue and shows the white lamb and the yellow goblet of the coat of arms in the leech, and four golden bars in the flying end.
