history
The place name was first documented in writing in 1295 and refers to Heide (Danish lyng ). The name is a summary of lyng for heather and Old Danish sæt for branch meaning branch in / on the heather . Due to the opening from / y / to / ø /, the German has been reinterpreted to Leo. Furthermore, the basic word -sæt has been reinterpreted to -sted in German and partly in Danish (similar to Mildstedt ). The Jutland dialect in central Schleswig ( Viöler Danish ) has largely retained the earlier form ( Lyngste ).
Historically, the place belongs to the parish Viöl within the Nordergoesharde of the Duchy of Schleswig .
In 1926 Löwenstedt received a station on the Flensburg – Husum railway line and became a railway junction in 1928 when the line to Bredstedt was opened. Since the train stations were usually quite far from the town centers, the volume of traffic was lower than expected. The branch line Bredstedt – Löwenstedt was dismantled as early as 1942; the main line was closed in 1959 and then dismantled.
On April 1, 1934, the parish district of Viöl was dissolved. Many of their villages, village communities and farmers became independent communities / rural communities, including Löwenstedt. On December 1, 1934, Löwenstedt was merged with the neighboring community of Ostenau to form a new community of Löwenstedt.
The community gained national fame in 2018 after a villager developed an app with which the street lights in the town center can be switched on individually.
