Location of the municipality of Norddorf on Amrum in the North Friesland district | ||
Norddorf auf Amrum ( North Frisian : Noorsaarep , Danish : Nordtorp ) is one of the three communities on the North Sea island of Amrum , alongside Nebel and Wittdün on Amrum .
geography
The municipality occupies the northern third of the island of Amrum. Except for a few houses, the place is on the Geest, the Geestrand runs along the north side of the village. To the north is a diked marshland , to the northwest, west and southwest of Norddorf there is a belt of dunes . The highest Amrum dune, called A Siatler (German "Setzerdüne"), is 32 meters high here. The Ban Horn school camp is located about one kilometer north of the village . The Borag house stands on a hill from the Viking Age on the mudflats.
history
Norddorf, together with Süddorf, is the oldest of the Amrum villages. In 1890 Friedrich von Bodelschwingh founded Seehospize in Norddorf and north of Norddorf , which shaped the character of the place for a long time. With Hüttmanns Hotel , the first hotel was built in the town center. In 1902, Norddorf was first served by the Amrum Island Railway, which continued to the northwest to the Kniephafen on the Kniepsand . The Kniephafen could also be called by larger ships and was mainly used for shipping to Hörnum on Sylt .
On July 25, 1925, Norddorf broke away from the municipality of Amrum , which at that time comprised the entire island without Wittdün. The Norddorf community was newly formed. In the same year, large parts of the village burned down, so that since then mostly newer houses without thatched roofs characterize the village image.
In 1938 the jetty was relocated to the north for the last time due to the progressive silting up. With the deposition of the Kniepsand on the island's dune belt, this port also had to be abandoned. In 1939 the island railway was shut down and replaced by omnibuses. With the establishment of a spa center in 1956, Norddorf became a Seeheilbad . A swimming pool built in the 1970s was later shut down. In 2001, Hospice I, about a kilometer north of the village, was demolished. The other lake hospices no longer exist or are used for other purposes.
The municipality of Norddorf together with the municipalities of Nebel and Wittdün formed the Amrum office until December 31, 2006 . Since then, Norddorf belongs to the Föhr-Amrum office .
On April 27, 2009, the community received the addition to Amrum and has been called Norddorf auf Amrum since then .
politics
The Voting Community Norddorf (WGN) has held all nine seats in the municipal council since the local elections in 2018 . For the 2018 election, a single list was drawn up for the first time.
Attractions
The Norddorfer bathing beach lies to the west on the Kniepsand. To the west and south of the village is the Amrum Dunes nature reserve . On its eastern edge, south of Norddorf in the foggy area, is the Vogelkoje Meeram or Meerum with its historical fishing facilities, which has been a "nature experience center" since 2011. In the former swimming pool near the beach, a natural history center with a focus on environmental protection has been set up, operated by Öömrang Ferian .
The Amrumer Odde (northern tip of the island) can be reached from Norddorf . There is another nature reserve there. Waders and other animals of the Wadden Sea can be easily observed here. Guided tours through the Jordsand Association take place regularly.
There is a viewing platform on the Dune A Siatler . Further to the southwest, near the transition to Kniepsand, you will find the Norddorf lighthouse with Art Nouveau elements . The beacon was erected in 1906 and serves as a guide and cross- mark beacon for the Vorrappenief fairway . The lighthouse is known as a cross- brand fire on Amrum .
Two Frisian houses and a Frisian wall are registered as cultural monuments, see the list of cultural monuments in Norddorf on Amrum .

The largest accommodation facility in Norddorf is the Nordseeklinik, a mother-child health clinic run by the AOK , which accepts up to 159 adults and their children between the ages of 3 and 14 for preventive and rehabilitation cures.
Norddorf is at the northern end of the L 215 state road , which leads to Wittdün. Buses operated by the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei run regularly .
