The Norddorf lighthouse is a beacon in the north of the German North Sea island of Amrum in the state of Schleswig-Holstein . It is located southwest of the town of Norddorf in the Amrum Dunes nature reserve on the eastern edge of the Kniepsand . On Amrum, the navigation mark is usually referred to as a cross-mark fire . Its more important function, however, is that of a pilot light , which is used by shipping to steer into the port of Hörnum on the neighboring island of Sylt .

Data

The Norddorf lighthouse stands on a sand dune on the western edge of the Amrum dune belt. The two-storey high construction rests on a conical brick base almost a meter high . The wall of the cylindrical tower consists of cast-iron shell plates screwed together , the lantern is a steel construction with a conical roof made of copper . The fire carrier height of the Norddorf lighthouse is eight meters, the fire height 22 meters above the mean high tide . The lighthouse shows a permanent light in three color sectors white, red and green. The ranges of its electrically operated light are 16.1  nautical miles for the white sector, 12.9 nautical miles for the red and 11.8 nautical miles for the green sector. The optics are a belt lens . The identifier of the beacon is Ubr. W. r. gn. 6 s . Its function is that of a guiding, orientation and cross-mark light. The international serial number is B 1728.

history

The Amrum Norddorf beacon was built in 1906. It was manufactured by the Berlin company Julius Pintsch AG , which, in addition to beacon lanterns, also had small beacons in its product range. The architecture of the lighthouse contains elements of Art Nouveau . When it was commissioned, the lighthouse was operated with a blue gas incandescent light. The beacon was electrified in the 1930s. At the western foot of the dune of the lighthouse there are still the ruins of the gas bunker in which the fuel was stored. Gustav Nahmens, who lives in Norddorf, was entrusted with monitoring the operation. In 1936 the beacon was switched to electric light together with the Amrum lighthouse . Since December 5, 1984, the light of the Norddorf lighthouse, like that of all other beacons on Amrum, has been remotely controlled by the Tönning Waterways and Shipping Office .
