Dune

Frank Herbert (1984)

Dune (English for dune ), also Dune cycles, is a related series of science fiction novels by Frank Herbert and at the same time the original title of the first volume (German title Der Wüstenplanet ). With the book Der Wüstenplanet Herbert won the first Nebula Award in 1966 and the Hugo Award in the same year , each in the category of best novel . By his death in 1986, the book had sold more than twelve million times.

Dune is also one of the names of the desert planet Arrakis , on which the spice (known as a spice or melange in German) is obtained under harsh conditions . The characteristics of the Spice make it possible to foresee the future. This is used by the navigators to control the spaceships with which humanity moves between the habitable planets. You recognize the consequences of different course dates and can thus choose the course that leads exactly to the goal. Computers and robots with artificial intelligence are regarded as competition degrading human intelligence at the time in which the book's plot is set and have been banned from society since Butler's jihad .

Frank Herbert's original Wüstenplanet cycle consists of six novels that were published between 1965 and 1985. After the author's death, the cycle was expanded to include two earlier trilogies and a subsequent cycle. The authors of the new series are Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson . The Early Chronicles form a direct introduction. The legends, which were settled about 10,000 years before the Early Chronicles , are a kind of prehistory. The hunters of the desert planet (Hunters of Dune) and the redeemers of the desert planet (Sandworms of Dune) are located after the last book written by Herbert himself and continue the story according to his unfinished manuscripts.

History of origin

The first Dune novels were written by Frank Herbert. After his death, his son Brian Herbert and the writer Kevin J. Anderson continue the series.

Frank Herbert

The idea for Dune came about while researching a program by the US Department of Agriculture to fortify dunes. The resulting sequel stories Dune World and The Prophet of Dune appeared in Astounding in the December 1963 to February 1964 issues and in the January to May 1965 issues.

Frank Herbert published a total of six volumes. The first three volumes are closely related in terms of time and their main characters, see Dune - the first trilogy . The fourth volume has been moved a few thousand years into the future. The last two volumes again form a closely coordinated pair.

  • Dune , 1965 (German: The Desert Planet , 1967/1978)
  • Dune Messiah , 1969 (German: The Lord of the Desert Planet , 1971)
  • Children of Dune , 1976 (Eng. The children of the desert planet , 1978)
  • God Emperor of Dune , 1982 (dt. The god emperor of the desert planet , 1982)
  • Heretics of Dune , 1984 ( The heretics of the desert planet , 1985)
  • Chapterhouse Dune , 1985 (German: The order castle of the desert planet , 1985)

A seventh tape should with Heretics and Chapterhouse started the second trilogy complete; Herbert's death prevented that.

Motifs from the Dune cycle can be found in various shorter novels and stories by Frank Herbert, written during the same period. Recurring topics are mind-altering drugs ( The People of Santaroga ) and paranormal abilities ( The Rites of the Gods ), the question of a stable form of government ( The Heisenberg's eyes ), genetic manipulation or the breeding of supermen ( The Rites of the Gods , The Heisenberg's Eyes ) as well as secret societies dominated by women who seek to seize power ( The Rites of the Gods ). These novels can be read as preliminary literary studies in which Frank Herbert developed the ideas that ultimately flowed into his main work. Other authors cite "religion, politics, evolution, economy and ecology" as the subjects that run through Herbert's works.

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

Brian Herbert (September 2008)

During a long hike in Death Valley in 1997, it occurred to Kevin J. Anderson to write more Dune stories, particularly a seventh, final volume. He found Brian Herbert's address and wrote him a letter asking Herbert about his plans for Dune and any notes from his father. A joint phone call was successful and led to Anderson visiting Herbert and the first ideas for the three volumes of the early chronicles. The desert planet - the early chronicles together form a story arc and tell the immediate prehistory to the first novel The desert planet . According to Publishers Weekly , Bantam Books , which had just withdrawn from the competition for the book rights for the Star Wars prequel trilogy, offered a million dollars per volume.

  • Prelude to Dune: House Atreides , 1999 (German: The Desert Planet - The Early Chronicles 1: The House Atreides , 2001)
  • Prelude to Dune: House Harkonnen , 2000 (Eng. The desert planet - The early chronicles 2: The house Harkonnen , 2001)
  • Prelude to Dune: House Corrino , 2001 (German: The Desert Planet - The Early Chronicles 3: The House Corrino , 2002)

The desert planet - The legends go back to the beginnings of the Dune universe and try to fathom the structures of power and society:

  • Legends of Dune: The Butlerian Jihad , 2002 (German: The Desert Planet - The Legends 1: Butler's Jihad , 2003)
  • Legends of Dune: The Machine Crusade , 2003 (German: The Desert Planet - The Legends 2: The Crusade , 2004)
  • Legends of Dune: The Battle of Corrin , 2004 (Eng. The desert planet - The legends 3: The battle of Corrin , 2005)

From the estate of Frank Herbert, the two of them have compiled several stories for the book Träume vom Wüstenplaneten ISBN 978-3-453-52331-9 . It contains, among other things, short stories about Dune, anecdotes and also a very short early version of Volume 1 of the desert planet . The book was also published in German in October 2009.

  • The Road to Dune , 2005 (German dreams of the desert planet , 2009)
Kevin J. Anderson, Comic Con 2004

Based on Frank Herbert's notes on the seventh book, and to conclude the Desert Planet saga, two volumes have been published:

  • Hunters of Dune , 2006 (German hunters of the desert planet , 2007)
  • Sandworms of Dune , 2007 (German: The Redeemers of the Desert Planet , 2008)

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson are working on another series in the Dune universe called Heroes of Dune . The events that lie between the end of the book The Desert Planet and the beginning of the book The Lord of the Desert Planet are described. Volume 1, Paul of Dune , describes other events from Paul Atreides' early years, while Volume 2, Winds of Dune , deals with Princess Irulan.

  • Paul of Dune , 2008 (German: The Desert Planet: Paul Atreides , 2010)
  • Winds of Dune , 2009 (German storms of the desert planet , 2010)
  • Another book is planned, the working title of which is Leto of Dune . The release date has not yet been set.

In July 2010, Kevin J. Anderson announced that he was working with Brian Herbert on another trilogy ( Great Schools of Dune ) set some time after the Battle of Corrin and the creation of the great schools of the Dune universe (the Bene Gesserit , the Mentats, the Suk Doctors, the Spaceman’s Guild and the Navigators) as well as the consolidation of the rule of the House of Corrino. So far, three volumes have been published.

  • Sisterhood of Dune , 2012 (Eng. The Throne of the Desert Planet , 2014)
  • Mentats of Dune , 2014 (German: The Mentats of the Desert Planet , 2016)
  • Navigators of Dune , 2016 (German The Navigators of the Desert Planet , 2017)

Herbert and Anderson write half of the books. At the beginning there is a joint brainstorming session and the planning of the individual chapters. Each of the two then writes half of the chapters, with the chapters being distributed according to their strengths. Then both of them take turns working on the complete draft until they send it to the publisher.

The world of Dune

Dune is set somewhere in the universe in the distant future . Hundreds or thousands of years pass between the storylines of the individual books.

The characters involved and the most important terms are described in generic articles:

Locations

The main locations of the action are planets. The most important of these is "Arrakis", also called "Dune". For much of the storyline, arrakis is the only source of the spice. Most of the surface is covered by desert, making water extremely precious. Since the desert is roamed by huge "sandworms", the human settlements can only be found on rocky ground. Or they are, like the administrative headquarters of the ruling families ("Arrakis City" / "Arrakeen", previously "Carthag"), enclosed by a shield wall made of mountains. Scattered in the desert are "Sietchs", settlements of the indigenous tribes of the "Fremen". Through human intervention, Arrakis is terraformed into a world with forests and oceans , then again into a desert world and finally uninhabitable.

content

The legends

The legends play out about 10,000 years before the main plot. Many planets of mankind, including the earth , are subjugated by the artificial intelligence Omnius . This came about while a group of people who called themselves titans wanted to forcibly tear humanity out of its lethargy. The attempt of the Omnius to conquer the League of Nobles called the Association of Human Planets, ultimately leads to the annihilation of all artificial intelligences in Butler's Jihad .

At the same time, all the structures that will form the social order 10,000 years later are developing.

The early chronicles

The early chronicles take place a few years before the main plot.

First cycle

The first three novels (first cycle) of the original series are designed as a unified complete work. The plot of the novels is set in time in an indefinite distant future. The reference date is the official founding of the spaceman guild, the action begins in 10190 AC (= after the guild was founded).

Humanity lives in a feudal empire under a padishah - imperator and planetary prince on a variety of planetary systems. The navigators of the spacemen's guild ensure the only fast connection between the worlds of the empire. The technicians from planet Ix and the order of the Bene Gesserit , which consists exclusively of women, represent other important power groups. Thinking machines ( computers and cyborgs ) were destroyed a long time ago in a crusade ( Butler's Jihad ) and have not been built or used since then. They are replaced by people who have been conditioned to perform at their best in mathematics, so-called mentats .

The Dune saga unfolds in the conflict between the royal houses of the Atreides (after the legendary Greek ancestor Atreus ) and the Harkonnen for control of the desert planet Arrakis , called Dune by the local Fremen . Only on Arrakis can the drug melange (in German 'mixture'), also known as spice (German 'spice'), be collected. The melange is of fundamental importance for the entire empire. Melange enables the guild navigators to use clairvoyant skills to safely steer superluminal spaceships through hyperspace . Without melange, interstellar space travel would come to a standstill and the empire would break up into independent star systems. Melange also has mind-altering properties and properties that slow down the aging process. Melange is addicting. Withdrawal can lead to death. So there are good reasons why rulership over the desert planet is of vital importance. The novel cycle begins with an imperial change of fiefdom of the desert planet. The rule passed from the hands of the House of Harkonnen to those of the House of Atreides.

God Emperor

Frank Lewecke : Rising Green (1996), cover picture for The God Emperor of the Desert Planet ; Heyne Verlag (2001 edition)

The fourth novel in the series takes place 3500 years after Leto II , the son of Paul Atreides (Muad'Dib) came to power. The reader learns that Leto has entered into a symbiosis with the sandworm, as otherwise humanity would have perished according to his vision.

The importance of religion is an important theme of this novel. Leto appears godlike, omniscient, and knows both the past and the future. Although his body has changed grotesquely into the worm-like and only his face has remained that of a human being, he is worshiped by a fanatical church. Without it becoming clear to those involved, Leto plans his own death in order to free the humanity he has put in chains. The motif of God sacrificing himself for humanity is familiar from various religions . The ironic question: “We believe in God - what does God believe in?” Herbert cannot be ignored either.

The novel ends with Leto's death and the beginning of the diaspora, the departure of people into the unpopulated expanse of the universe. Leto's rescue plan has succeeded. Meanwhile, humanity is spread across too many planets to be exterminated or to exterminate itself. The guarantee that mankind will never again have to suffer the dictatorship of a visionary god emperor is provided by the genetically mutated descendants of Siona Atreides and Duncan Idaho. They can no longer be tracked down by any future perspective.

Second cycle

The fifth and sixth novels in the original series again form a unit of content. Frank Herbert could no longer complete the planned closing volume.

The novels are moved another 6,500 years into the future. Humanity has made technical, biological and psychological advances. The central themes of the previous novels, the survival of humanity and the question of human nature , are still acute.

The known universe is no longer ruled by an emperor, independent groups (Bene Gesserit, Bene Tleilax, Ix) struggle for supremacy. The return of the Honored Matres and other groups from the Diaspora disrupts the fragile balance. Both novels follow the efforts of the Bene Gesserit, in whose ranks many descendants of the Atreides act, to avert the downfall of the old empire and to integrate the returnees.

subjects

The socially relevant topics of his time are reflected directly or metaphorically in the novel: the growing use of EDP (Butler's Jihad), the dependence on oil and experiences with mind-altering drugs (both in the form of the "spice"), the feminist movement (Bene Gesserit ), Questions of ecology (life under desert conditions, option of greening arrakis), the threat of nuclear weapons and the like. a. The rapid scientific and technical development, especially of electronic computing technology, gave rise to irrational fears about the seizure of power by machines and computers. This was accompanied by an extensive shift and the breaking away of traditional values and religious foundations. Against the background of the permanent threat of global annihilation by the nuclear weapons of the Cold War , youth culture looked for alternatives in Eastern philosophies and salvation teachings, accompanied by the consumption of psychotropic drugs. One began to question the ecological effects of rapid and extensive industrialization . Feminism , equality and the newly defined role of women became hotly debated topics. Last but not least, the fundamental philosophical questions inherent in quantum theory are echoed.

According to Parkerson, one of the themes in the book "Dune" is power . For him, Herbert was convinced that war was the logical consequence of political and economic power struggles. This development supports the appearance of leaders or superheroes. The connecting basis for the exercise of military, political and economic power is, as shown in Dune, the semantics . This is particularly evident with the Bene Gesserit. Based on the meeting of Paul Atreides with their "Mother Superior", Herbert shows how much can be expressed through gestures and what power language has.

style

For a long time, the novels are shaped by mystical and philosophical reflections in the form of dialogues or inner monologues of the main characters. The series can be read as a philosophical study wrapped in a well-thought-out sci-fi story. In the first cycle, terms from the Arabic-speaking world are used remarkably often. The religious figures of thought described can be assigned to Islam rather than Christianity .

reception

Dune has been considered one of the best SF novels of all time and enjoys cult status since its publication . There are several reasons for this. Herbert broke through the then common scheme of the genre , which was based on action-packed adventures, peppered with more or less imaginative descriptions of scientifically based phenomena. Instead, he described an entire civilizational universe down to the smallest details of daily life and extrapolated global events and developments of his time into a distant future. Against the background of the contradiction between economy and ecology as a leitmotif , he designed the model of a post-technological feudal society with strongly mystifying elements.

A parody called National Lampoon's Doon was released in 1984. After The Lord of the Dark Circles , this was the second parody novel by the American satirical magazine The Harvard Lampoon . Franz and Herbert - The desert planet - The parody by Ellis Weiner was published in Germany in 1985.

Film adaptations

Several attempts have been made to bring Dune's material to the big screen or to adapt it for television.

The non-filming of Jacobs

In the early 1970s, the producer Arthur P. Jacobs was negotiating with Frank Herbert about the filming rights. Inspired by his success with the first “ Planet of the Apes ” film, he looked for other worthwhile science fiction motifs. David Lean and Franklin J. Schaffner were discussed as directors . Robert Bolt , among others, worked on the script . With the death of Jacobs in 1973, the project was stopped and the option to film rights lapsed.

The non-filming of Jodorowsky

Alejandro Jodorowsky (2008)

The French author, publisher and producer Michel Seydoux then acquired the filming rights and worked with the director and author Alejandro Jodorowsky and the support of the comic artist Moebius to develop a detailed storyboard / screenplay, which he offered to many production companies in Hollywood. But they shied away from investing in the very experimental adaptation, despite the illustrious cast, who had already been enthusiastic about the psychedelic film project by Seydoux and Jodorowsky: David Carradine as Duke Leto , Charlotte Rampling as Lady Jessica , Orson Welles as Baron Harkonnen and Gloria Swanson as Gaius Helen Mohiam . Salvador Dalí and Mick Jagger were to play prominent roles, Pink Floyd to contribute the music. For Jodorowsky, who had been working in vain on a film adaptation since the mid-1970s, the Swiss artist HR Giger created a few design studies in February 1976, but these were not adopted. These were published in Giger's book "Necronomicon". Jodorowsky even planned to have Salvador Dalí perform on his Dune project for a $ 100,000 minute fee. In the few completed drawings, Giger dealt with the palace of the "Harkonnen". Some of the furniture designed by Giger for the film was made by Giger's workshop and ultimately used to furnish his “Giger bars”. They are also available through his website. For Jodorowsky, the British artist Chris Foss also created a number of designs in 1975 , which were published in the book 21st Century Foss with a foreword by Jodorowsky. Foss mostly drew spaceship designs for the project. Jodorowsky's efforts to film it form the basis of the 2013 American-French documentary “ Jodorowsky's Dune ”.

The non-film adaptation of Ridley Scott

In 1978 Dino De Laurentiis bought the rights. Its director Ridley Scott didn't want to do a big project after his brother's death. That's why he ended the project to shoot Blade Runner after seven months .

The first film adaptation by David Lynch

David Lynch (2009)

De Laurentiis made another attempt in 1981 after renewing the rights to the first book and acquiring those for sequels. He hired David Lynch , who turned down directing Return of the Jedi for it. Lynch signed for two sequels, but did not have the rights to the Final Cut . For sales reasons, the film should have a low age rating and not be as surreal as Lynch's debut directing Eraserhead .

In 1984 the first film adaptation of the novel was finally released with The Desert Planet . For commercial considerations of the producers , the rough cut was shortened from five hours to two hours 17 minutes instead of the targeted three hours . The film grossed $ 31 million, less than the $ 40 million budget. Roger Ebert gave the film one of four stars and explained:

"This movie is a real mess, an incomprehensible, ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion into the murkier realms of one of the most confusing screenplays of all time."

- Roger Ebert : Dune Movie Review & Film Summary (1984)

Lynch later stated that Dune was not the movie he would have made if he had been in full control. "It's a bit sad," said Lynch during a question and answer session at the opening of his art exhibition in London. He had to delete some of the most interesting scenes from the script because he was not given enough budget and should have produced numerous effects more cheaply.

Lynch has distanced himself from the 180-minute television version, in which most of the original material was reintegrated, which is why the pseudonym Alan Smithee was used.

The SciFi Channel miniseries

John Harrison adapted the material of the first book in 2000 as " Dune - The Desert Planet " for the American SciFi Channel . The miniseries won two Emmy Awards (for cinematography and visual effects ) and was nominated for a third ( sound editing ). The criticism of the Lexicon of International Films , on the other hand, is bad: "Dialogue-heavy, theatrically staged television mini-series that suffers from its under-budgeted equipment and bad special effects."

Three years later, the sequel to Children of Dune by Greg Yaitanes appeared as an adaptation of The Lord of the Desert Planet and The Children of the Desert Planet .

The non-filming by Paramount

In March 2008, the film studio Paramount Pictures announced another adaptation of the material. However, the project was discontinued in March 2011 without getting past the early planning phase.

The remake of Villeneuves

Denis Villeneuve (2017)

The rights were acquired in 2016 by Legendary Pictures , who announced in 2017 that Denis Villeneuve would direct. The film is slated to hit US theaters on December 18, 2020. Also planned is a television series entitled "Dune: The Sisterhood", the pilot of which is also being produced by Villeneuve.

music

Several bands named themselves after terms from the Dune cycles. The US metal core band Shai Hulud is named after the desert planet 's sandworms of the same name . The German producer Oliver Froning founded the dance project Dune together with the producers Jens Oettrich and Bernd Burhoff . On the 1995 released album Dune is the title "The Spice", which deals with the drug Spice found on Arrakis. The album Expedition refers to the desert planet both in the artwork and in the introduction and samples.

The British heavy metal band Iron Maiden processed the Dune material in the song To Tame A Land , released in 1983 on the album Piece of Mind . The song was originally supposed to be called "Dune". When the band sought permission and asked to use a spoken quote as an intro, Frank Herbert let his representatives tell her: “Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, especially no heavy rock bands, and certainly none Band like Iron Maiden. ”This explanation was reinforced by threat of punishment, whereupon Iron Maiden renamed the song. A cover version can be found as a bonus track on the 2009 album Black Clouds & Silver Linings by the band Dream Theater .

Other bands and musicians drew inspiration from the work:

  • The German death metal band Golem released their concept album The 2nd Moon in 1999 , which dealt lyrically with the Dune theme and processed the musical theme of the Toto title melody for the song "God Emperor" .
  • The German heavy metal band Blind Guardian also released a track on their album Tales from the Twilight World in 1990 , which uses the Dune theme, "Traveler in Time".
  • The German hip-hop artist Thomas D. processed the Dune theme in the piece "The Warrior" recorded with his band Die Fantastischen Vier . In this song, some parts of the sound material from the film Dune - The Desert Planet are sampled and the theme of the "awakening" is woven in. In addition, the song "Millions of Legions" contains the phrase "Surfer of the sandworm". On his album “Solo” he uses Piter De Vries' ( Brad Dourif ) mantra “Just by my will, my mind is set in motion. And sapho juice gives speed to thoughts. As a warning, spots appear on the lips ... ”as the intro to the song“ Herpes ”.
  • The Israeli Goa project Astral Projection has processed some samples of the sound material from the film Dune - The Desert Planet in its piece "Dancing Galaxy". There is also an ambient version of the song entitled "Ambient Galaxy" on the album Dancing Galaxy .
  • The Dutch musician Arjen Lucassen took up the topic with his project Star One in the piece "Sandrider".
  • The Austrian prog power metal band Serenity was inspired by Dune for the song "Canopus".
  • Under the project name Dune, Laurent Garnier and Pascal Dardoufas (FEOS) released the album The Alliance EP on the F Communications label in 1994 with four long trance pieces whose titles (Will I Dream?) Are clearly inspired by the book.
  • The British musician Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim ) used a Dune quote ("If You Walk Without Rhythm, You Won't Attract the Worm") in his song Weapon of Choice .
  • On February 16, 2007, the industrial black metal band Red Harvest released the album A Greater Darkness . The eighth title, "Warthemes", processes the "Main Title" from the 1984 film.
  • The Dutch drum and bass crew Black Sun Empire released a track called "Arrakis" on the album Driving Insane in March 2004 .
  • The Canadian musician Grimes released her debut album in 2010 entitled Geidi Primes , the titles of which all refer to the Dune novels.
  • The German musician Klaus Schulze released his album Dune in 1979 , the title of which, according to his own statements, refers to the first 3 Dune novels. (From an interview printed in the re-release of the CD)

Games

Dune's actions have been adapted several times for games.

Board games

It started with two strategic board games , both called Dune. The Avalon Hill 1979 edition is based on the book. A heavily revised new edition appeared in 2019. Parker's game (1984) is based on the film by David Lynch.

Dune

Two computer games appeared in 1992. Cryo Interactive Entertainment brought out an adventure game called Dune .

Dune II

Also in 1992 was Dune II - Battle for Arrakis by Westwood Studios . One of the first known real-time strategy games .

Westwood's publisher Virgin Interactive drew her attention to Dune. Brett Sperry, one of the two founders, was also a fan of the series.

The game was reissued in 1998 as Dune 2000 (since 2012 also available as a browser game).

In the 1990s / 2000s

In 1997 an English trading card game , also under the name Dune , was released by Last Unicorn Games. And with Dune: Chronicles of the Imperium (2000) an English role-playing game by Last Unicorn Games / Wizards of the Coast was released .

In 2001, Emperor: Battle for Dune by Westwood Studios and Frank Herbert's Dune by Cryo Interactive Entertainment were released. The latter is a 3D action game based on the three-part TV miniseries. Dune Generations , a combination of MMORPG and real-time strategy game , was not completed because the company Cryo Interactive Entertainment was closed. Since October 2005 there have been several browser games , some of which are very precisely based on the books by Frank Herbert and the Westwood classic "Dune II". In 2019, Funcom announced that it would be releasing at least three games for PC / console in a six-year collaboration with Legendary Studios . One of them is to an Open World - multiplayer are game.

Comic adaptations

In 1984 the American Marvel publishing company published the special volume Marvel Super Special 36 in which David Lynch's film was adapted as a comic. In the following year the comic was published again as a 3-part mini-series. It was written by Ralph Macchio, the drawings are by Bill Sienkiewicz .

In 2017, Brian Herbert announced that he and Kevin Anderson were working on a new adaptation. The book from 1965 will be implemented as a three-part graphic novel , the first part will be published in October 2020. The volumes will be illustrated by Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín, the cover pictures by Bill Sienkiewicz .

The last edition is from October 1999 and the books have long been out of print. Frank Herbert writes in the foreword that he himself did not follow this encyclopedia for his subsequent volumes, which originally appeared in English to match volume 2. Thus there are sometimes considerable differences in content. On the other hand, the contents of the encyclopedia were later used by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson for the other books.

Audio books

From 1978 onwards, four long-playing records with excerpts from the novels were released by Caedmon Records , read by Herbert himself:
