Alejandro Jodorowsky [ a.le.ˈxan.ð̪ɾo xo.ð̪o.ˈɾov.ski ] (born February 17, 1929 in Tocopilla , Chile ) is a Chilean director , actor , producer, composer, playwright, mime, writer and comic book writer . He is particularly known for his esoteric, surreal and shocking films and novels, as well as a number of comic albums.

Life

Jodorowsky is the child of a Jewish family from Ukraine . He grew up in Chile. In 1953 he went to Paris to study pantomime with Étienne Decroux . Then he joined the group of the Decroux student Marcel Marceau . Together with Olivier Boiscommun , he posthumously set a monument to him in the comic Pietrolino .

His first feature film, Fando y Lis, based on Fernando Arrabal , was made in 1967. In it, he described the journey of a young couple to the promised land of Tar in surreal montages. Jodorowsky earned his status as a cult director with El Topo (1970) and Montana Sacra - The Holy Mountain (1973).

In 1975 Jodorowsky began working on the film adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel Dune (The Desert Planet) . According to Jodorowsky's ideas, the film should be ten hours long and had Orson Welles , Salvador Dalí and Gloria Swanson as actors. The music for the film should be from Pink Floyd and the French music group Magma , one of the two bands should represent one of the ruling houses, the equipment should come from HR Giger . When the donors withdrew from the project, David Lynch was commissioned to make the film . The documentary “ Jodorowsky's Dune ” by Frank Pavich from 2013 tells the story of this never realized film project.

Only in 1989 did Jodorowsky make a comeback with Santa Sangre . The Rainbow Thief followed the following year .

In 2013, Jodorowsky made an impressive comeback at the Cannes Film Festival with his new film La Danza de la Realidad . The film was shown on May 18, 2013 as part of Directors' Fortnight and was highly praised by the international trade press. In the film, Jodorowsky's son Brontis Jodorowsky plays the role of Jodorowsky's father Jaime. His two sons Axel and Adán (music) were also involved in the production, and his wife Pascale Montandon was the costume designer.

The first major international Jodorowsky retrospective took place at the Munich Film Festival in June 2013, including the German premiere of La Danza de la Realidad . Three years later, Jodorowsky presented his new film Poesia sín fin in Cannes.

Jodorowsky currently lives in Paris and works as a comic book writer . So he has z. B. wrote the story of the 13-volume John Difool (the first six volumes and the 13th drawn by Moebius ). In the last few years Jodorowsky has written several books in the field of artistic therapy and personal development. Especially in France and in the Spanish-speaking world he gives lectures under the title “How can I be useful to you?”, Lays tarot cards with the restored Tarot de Marseille together with Philippe Camoin , researches the family tree and prescribes according to the psychomagic he has developed .

His work is published by Siruela in Spain and by Albin Michel in France. So far in German are The Way of the Tarot , Praxisbuch der Psychomagie and The Finger and the Moon . Alejandro Jodorowsky said: “Most directors make films with their eyes. I make films with my balls. ”The Italian band Timoria was inspired by his film El Topo and therefore named one of their albums El Topo Grand Hotel. In the band's song of the same name, Jodorowsky himself has his say.

In July 2013 the asteroid (261690) Jodorowsky was named after him.

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.

family

Jodorowsky was first married to the actress Valerie Jodorowsky geb. Trumblay married. His second wife is the costume designer Pascale Montandon-Jodorowsky. He has five children: Brontis (* 1962), Eugenie (* 1964), Axel (* 1965), Teo (1971–1995) and Adan (* 1979). His wives and sons worked in several Jodorowsky's film productions in front of and behind the camera. Brontis, Axel and Adan Jodorowsky are active as actors, as is Brontis' daughter Alma Jodorowsky .
