Jodorowsky's Dune is a documentary film about the unsuccessful attempt by Alejandro Jodorowsky to film the novel Dune in the mid-1970s.

content

Filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky recalls his biggest failed project in his crowded study in Paris . Successful as a theater man and avant-garde filmmaker, he wanted to create the greatest film of all time in the mid-1970s, a multi-hour film adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction novel Dune . He was looking for spiritual warriors to accompany his path. Fascinated by the comic series Lieutenant Blueberry , he asked the draftsman Jean Giraud , with whom he then worked on a storyboard weighing a kilo with a total of 3000 drawings every day. Chris Foss was hired to design the spaceships in London. Inspired by the movie Dark Star , Dan O'Bannon was asked for the special effects, who then moved to Paris. HR Giger , who was previously inexperienced in film, was hired as the designer of the Harkonnen empire . Pink Floyd and Magma were intended for the music . The actors should be David Carradine (as Leto ), Salvador Dalí (as Imperator ), Amanda Lear (as Princess Irulan ), Mick Jagger (as Feyd-Rautha ), Udo Kier (as Piter DeVries ), Orson Welles (as Baron Harkonnen ) and Brontis Jodorowsky (acting as Paul ).

In contrast to the novel, the desert planet would turn into a paradise at the end and, as the Messiah, would spiritually illuminate other planets in the universe.

The approximately 15 million dollar project was rejected by all major Hollywood studios. It is believed that many of the storyboard motifs were used in other films, including Jodorowsky and Giraud for the comic series John Difool . In addition, HR Giger, Dan O'Bannon and Giraud were then successful with the film Alien - The uncanny creature from a strange world .

Prizes and awards

The documentary has been nominated for numerous film awards, including the Critics' Choice Movie Award , the Chlotrudis Award , the Chicago Film Critics Association Award and the Satellite Award .
