Christopher "Chris" Frank Foss (born March 16, 1946 in Guernsey , Bailiwick of Guernsey , Channel Islands ) is an English illustrator , painter and graphic artist who is primarily known for his science fiction illustrations, as well as the illustrations of the book The Joy of Sex from 1972 is known.

When referring to the author, Chris Foss is often confused with the English military author Christopher F. Foss , who was also born in 1946 .

life and work

Foss' parents, both teachers, were working in the county of Devon in England , but returned frequently back in the summer holidays to Guernsey. Foss found his love for drawing very early on, especially for technical subjects. After abandoning his architecture studies in Cambridge , he began to make covers for books in 1970. His favorite subjects were futuristic subjects for science fiction.

In 1972, Alex Comfort published the sex manual, The Joy of Sex . Foss produced the book illustrations for this. As a template for his illustrations, he used photos that he took in his studio in Fulham , London. A new edition of the book has been distributed since September 2008.

In 1973 he was commissioned by the London publisher Futura Publications Limited to produce several works for the Perry Rhodan series in Great Britain . For the story The Shepherd (German title: Der Lotse) by Frederick Forsyth , published in 1975 in London by Hutchinson , he made some illustrations.

In 1977 he designed some designs for the planet Krypton for the film Superman , such as the crystal structures, but these were converted into ice structures. In April 1977 he designed the cover of the music album Clear Air Turbulence by the English Ian Gillan Band .

For Alejandro Jodorowsky's planned but never realized Dune film adaptation, Foss created several design drafts in 1975, which were published in the book 21st Century Foss ( ISBN 90-6332-571-1 ) with a foreword by Jodorowsky. Foss mostly drew spaceship designs for the project.
