action

In 1988, little Peter Quill's mother died of a brain tumor. Before she dies, she indicates that Peter's father, whom he himself never met, was a "being made of light" and gives him a gift. When Peter, desperate about his mother's passing, runs out of the hospital, he is kidnapped by a spaceship.

26 years later, Peter, who is now cockyly calling himself Star-Lord , has become a Ravager , a space looter and smuggler who is part of the gang of the alien Yondu Udonta. Very little of his life on earth has survived, including the last present from his mother, which he has not yet opened, as well as an old Walkman and a cassette of old songs that his mother put together for him. One day he and Yondu are given the task of recovering a metal ball, the so-called orb , from a ruined city. But as soon as Peter has the ball in hand, he is attacked by Korath and his men, followers of a certain Ronan. Peter manages to escape; he betrays Yondu and wants to sell the orb to the fence who commissioned the recovery on his own account. In revenge for this betrayal, Yondu offers a high bounty for Peter's capture.

Peter has no idea that behind Ronan is the character Ronan the Prosecutor , a member of the Kree people and a fanatical enemy of the inhabitants of the planet Xandar. The inhabitants of this influential, advanced world negotiated a peace treaty with the Kree some time ago, but Ronan does not want to accept this because he lost his father and grandfather in the previous war against Xandar. In order to satisfy his thirst for revenge, Ronan has concluded an agreement with the insane conqueror Thanos : Thanos has promised to destroy Xandar for Ronan in order to obtain the orb. As a guardian and pledge for this alliance, Thanos has placed his adopted daughters Gamora and Nebula, assassins converted into cyborgs , at Ronan's side. When he learns that Korath has failed in his task of recovering the orb, he gives in to Gamora's urging and sends her to retrieve the object.

Meanwhile, Peter meets the fence in his shop on Xandar. When he hears that Ronan is after the Orb too, he abruptly breaks off the conversation and pushes Peter out of his shop. Outside, Peter is attacked by both Gamora, who wants to take the Orb, and the bounty hunters Rocket and Groot. The two, a hyper-intelligent, selfish raccoon and a tree-like creature, are after Yondu's premium for Peter's capture. In the end, all four are arrested by the Nova Corps, Xandar's security forces, and put in Kyln, a prison in the middle of space. There, Gamora, who has a bad reputation for her connection to Thanos and Ronan, is threatened with death by several other inmates, including Drax, who lost his family to Ronan and swore revenge on him for it. Peter, who has taken a liking to Gamora, frees her from this situation. Gamora, who hates Thanos from the beginning for the death of her people at his hand, suggests in return that the Orb be sold to someone she knows and that the substantial reward be shared among themselves.

After an adventurous rescue operation devised by Rocket, the four manage to break out of prison with Drax. You go to Knowhere , a crime- riddled mine colony, and there come into contact with Gamora's customer, the collector Taneleer Tivan , who hoards the rarest and strangest things in the universe. Tivan explains to them that the orb is actually a casket for an infinity stone, one of six jewels that absorbed the concentrated energy of the cosmos before the big bang and therefore represent a source of priceless energy, but which only very few Being can be controlled. One of Tivan's servants tries to take the stone, but is destroyed by the energy of the jewel along with the collector's collection. Determined not to let the stone fall into the wrong hands, Gamora decides to hand the stone over to the Nova Corps. Peter agrees to this request.

Meanwhile, Drax, drunk and grieving over the loss of his family, has radioed Ronan to challenge him to a fight. Ronan, who is now personally looking for Gamora and Orb, immediately sets off for Knowhere. At the same time, Yondu also followed Peter's trail to Knowhere. Drax attacks Ronan, but is far inferior to him and is left to die by his enemy, but is saved by Groot. Gamora, supported by Peter and Rocket, tries to reach Peter's ship with the orb in a small spaceship, but is pushed out into space and shot down by her sister Nebula. While Ronan retrieves the orb, Peter selflessly saves Gamora, who is unconscious in the vacuum, before the two are picked up by Yondu's gang. The angry Yondu finds it difficult to convince Peter to ally himself with him against Ronan and prevent him from wiping out the galaxy with the power of the Infinity Stone. Together they work out a plan to board Ronan's ship and stop the mad warlord.

Meanwhile, Ronan, drunk by the temptation of the power of the Infinity Stone, has given up his trade with Thanos and now wants to destroy Xandar personally. Peter manages to warn the xandarian authorities of the impending danger and, with the support of the Nova Corps, confront Ronan's forces. Peter, Gamora, Drax and Groot manage to break into Ronan's ship and get through to him, but the infinity stone has made it practically invincible. Rocket comes to the aid of his friends by breaking into Ronan's ship with his glider. However, critical systems are destroyed and the ship crashes on Xandar's surface. Groot grows a cocoon of branches to protect his friends from the impact, but he himself is destroyed in the process. Thanks to the power of the Infinity Stone, Ronan also survived the crash unscathed. As he prepares to destroy Xandar now, Peter distracts him so that Rocket and Drax can remove the stone from Ronan's hammer. Peter manages to get to the stone in front of Ronan and takes it in his hand, whereupon his energy flow passes through him. Gamora, Drax and Rocket make physical contact with Peter, so that the energy is divided between them and thereby weakened. Eventually, Peter can use the Infinity Stone to destroy Ronan.

Following their heroic deed, Peter and his friends are pardoned by Xandars Chancellor Nova Prime and the Infinity Stone is deposited in Chancellor Nova Prime's safe. Peter's ship, which was destroyed in battle, will be restored and given to him as a thank you gift. Rocket has found a member of Groot who over time will grow into a new version of his old friend. At the same time, it is revealed that Peter's father is an alien and that Yondu, who was actually commissioned to bring Peter to his father after his mother's death, broke the agreement. In the end, Peter finds the courage to open his mother's present: another cassette with old pop songs. He and his new family, now known as the Guardians of the Galaxy , set out on new adventures.

In one post-credit scene , the collector sits despondently in the ruins of his collection and has to put up with a few snappy remarks from one of his surviving collectibles, Howard the Duck .

It is the first Marvel movie to be number one for four weeks, beating the records of Marvel's The Avengers and The Return of the First Avenger , which were each number one for three weeks.

Reviews

This section consists only of a cunning collection of quotes from movie reviews. Instead, a summary of the reception of the film should be provided as continuous text, which can also include striking quotations, see also the explanations in the film format .

Guardians of the Galaxy received mostly positive reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes, 91% of the reviews were positive.

“The Guardians of the Galaxy may sometimes conjure up associations with Joss Whedon's Serenity or Star Wars , but they don't need to hide from other space operas. And that's not only due to the rousing action or the spectacular effects, but rather to a good helping of heart, which should basically be the trademark of such films. At most, it could turn out to be annoying that the film sometimes presses the lacrimal gland properly. "

- Dimitrios Athanassiou : Moviemaze.de

“Similar to what the Avengers did, the title-giving hero in Guardians also succeeds in becoming a team after an introductory phase, whose deeds only increase the tension on the following films [...]. Only Marvel manages to continuously produce films with so many protagonists without ever losing the overview. "

- unique-online.de

“'Guardians Of The Galaxy' is pure fun - a modern nostalgia trip, so peppered with retro quotes that even the arcade over-classic Asteroids is recreated with real spaceships. A must-attend event not just for all Marvel fans! "

- Björn Becher : Filmstarts.de

Sequels

Even before the film was released, the production of a second part entitled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was announced. James Gunn once again directed the film, and the shooting lasted from February 17 to June 16, 2016. The German theatrical release took place on April 27, 2017.

A third part was announced, with James Gunn initially no longer directing after disagreements with Disney, but was later brought back on board.

In addition, the Guardians of the Galaxy appear in Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel Avengers: Endgame .

The plot of the first part was also continued in the animated series Guardians of the Galaxy , but this is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Awards (selection)

The film was nominated for dozens of film awards in 2015 and has won several awards. In addition to Oscar nominations in the categories of Best Visual Effects and Best Make-up and Best Hairstyles , the production received a Saturn Award in three categories and Karen Gillan won an Empire Award and the Curt Siodmak Prize for best film.

Soundtrack

In addition to composed music, the film relies on already existing pop songs from the 1970s, which Star-Lord hears on his Walkman in the form of the so-called Awesome Mix Vol.1 , which his mother put together for him. The album was released on July 29, 2014 by Hollywood Records . It includes songs by Blue Swede and Norman Greenbaum , among others . As a special marketing campaign, the soundtrack was partly sold as a cassette . In 2014, it was the second best-selling soundtrack album after that of the movie Frozen - Totally Unabashed .
