The pop song I'm Not in Love , written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman , was first in 1975 on the album The Original Soundtrack by 10cc published. As a single, it rose to the top of the British charts on June 24, 1975 , where it stayed for two weeks. In the US , the song held second place for three weeks. It reached 8th place in Germany and Switzerland.

Emergence

Originally conceived as Bossa Nova by Eric Stewart , the song was quickly discarded due to harsh criticism from band members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme . However, when the studio staff sang the song more often, Stewart convinced his colleague Graham Gouldman of the hit potential of the song, and they worked together on the final version.

For the choir parts of the original version, the band members invented a kind of "virtual choir" in the Strawberry Recording Studios . To do this, they sang individual notes together in a multi-track recorder until 256 tracks were reached. From these tracks, endless tapes with the essential chords of the song were created. With the mixer , the required chords could then be faded in at the desired points of the recording. In this way the band was able to simulate a large choir and achieve an effect not dissimilar to the Mellotron , but surpass the latter in its abundance - and that in real stereo too . Billy Joel used the same technique two years later in his ballad Just the Way You Are .

The studio secretary was won over for the whispered text "Big boys don't cry, be quiet, big boys don't cry" because, as Stewart said, she has "such a wonderful voice on the telephone".

The million dollar deal with Mercury Records

I'm Not in Love was the main reason for Mercury Records to buy out the band's existing contract with Jonathan Kings UK Records . Eric Stewart recalls that they were absolutely broke at the time and Philips Phonogram wanted to negotiate with them.

“At that point in time we were still on Jonathan King's label, but struggling. We were absolutely skint, the lot of us, we were really struggling seriously, and Philips Phonogram wanted to do a deal with us. They wanted to buy Jonathan King's contract. I wrestled them. I said come and have a listen to what we've done, come and have a listen to this track. And they came up and they freaked, and they said 'This is a masterpiece. How much money, what do you want? What sort of a contract do you want? We'll do anything, we'll sign it '. On the strength of that one song, we did a five-year deal with them for five albums and they paid us a serious amount of money. "

“At that time we were still on contract with Jonathan King's label, but we were struggling to survive. We were totally broke, it was really a struggle for existence and Philips Phonogram was keen to get a deal with us. They wanted to buy up Jonathan King's contract with us. I called her and asked her to come over and hear what we had produced, to listen to this piece. They came over and said, 'This is a masterpiece. How much money do you want to have? What should the contract look like? We do what you want, we sign. ' Because this one track was so strong, we got a five-year contract for five albums and a substantial amount of money. "
