Nubya (born January 18, 1974 in Basel ) as Nnena Eza is a Swiss singer .

Stylistically it can be classified as R'n'B , jazz , soul and pop . Her stage name, according to her own statement, came from her imagination, but is derived from the Nubians , a people in Sudan and Egypt .

Life

Nubya is the daughter of a Nigerian and a Swiss woman. Nubya spent the first two years in Nigeria before coming to Switzerland. She started taking classical piano lessons at the age of seven, but stopped taking singing lessons in 1990. After passing her Matura at the Gymnasium am Münsterplatz in her hometown and inspired by the jazz musician Chester Gill who taught there, she studied jazz music for one year at the New School for Social Research in New York . After returning to Basel, she studied economics at the University of Basel .

In 1996 she met the renowned musician Bo Katzman backstage at a concert by DJ Bobo , whereupon he took her with him as a special guest for his gospel tour. Further appearances as a background singer a. a. by Celine Dion followed. She experienced a high point when she appeared in the opening act for Whitney Houston in front of 12,000 people in the Zurich Hallenstadion . Shortly thereafter, she hosted the television program “Cinderella” on the Swiss private broadcaster TV3 . Her album My Wish was released in 2002 , after which she gave concerts with her band in Switzerland, Germany and Brazil . In 2005 her German album Auf Meine Weise was released , which was produced by Götz von Sydow . In 2005 she toured Germany with Night of the Proms . In 2007 her album Love Rocks was released , 2011 Today . In 2019 she will accompany Circus Knie on its 100-year anniversary tour.

Nubya was in a relationship with Hartmut Engler , the singer of the band Pur , from May 2003 to the beginning of May 2008 . She has been married to the banker Johannes Barth since 2018.
