DJ BoBo, Sofia (2018)

DJ Bobo (* 5. January 1968 as René Peter Baumann in Kölliken , canton Aargau ) is a Swiss singer , rapper , dancer , composer and music producer .

From the so-called Eurodance time, DJ BoBo is one of the few artists who still successfully release albums. That is why he is also called the “ King of Dance ” by fans , although recently he has been incorporating more elements from pop and rock into his songs. DJ BoBo became known with a mixture of pop and dance floor .

career

Beginnings as a disk jockey and first singles

According to his own account, he discovered his passion for music in the 1980s and in 1985 became involved as a disk jockey (DJ) in the Tuchlaube youth center in Aarau . The stage name BoBo was his graffiti tag and nickname back then. According to his own statement, the name is an allusion to the Franco-Belgian comic figure Bobo, the escape king (spelling "BoBo" and "BOBO") by Paul Deliège and Maurice Rosy . In an interview, he stated that there were considerations to change the name. At the same time, the musician Prince changed his name, so DJ BoBo decided to wait for his experience. After Prince's change came with complications, DJ BoBo decided not to change his name. A year later Baumann achieved second place in the Swiss DJ championships. One of his other passions was breakdancing , where he met his manager Oliver Imfeld in a disco, who is pursuing a political career in the right-wing national SVP , referring to his managerial success . In the following years DJ BoBo worked as a professional DJ in the Don Paco and Hazyland discos.

During this time he was offered the opportunity to produce his own CD single. In early 1990 his first single I Love You was released . The female voice in the song was sung by the later Swiss TV presenter Sandra Studer . Two more singles - Ladies in the House and Let's Groove on - came out in 1991. In the meantime, DJ BoBo worked as a resident DJ at the Oxa disco in Zurich and occasionally had a few appearances with his songs in other discos. Even then, Kurt “Curtis” Burger (* February 3, 1971) and Daniel “Dani” Burkart (* February 20, 1971) were dancers who are still part of DJ BoBo's permanent dance crew and are involved in the planning of every tour; Burger as the choreographer and Burkart as the person responsible for the graphics and the stage design.

1992-1994: Somebody Dance with Me

The next single Somebody Dance with Me was created for the first time in a professional recording studio together with the experienced Hamburg producer Axel Behre , who wrote or co-produced songs until 2009. When it was played for the first time in October 1992 in the OXA discotheque, the song was very well received. On January 10, 1993, the song entered the official Swiss charts at number 36 , and on March 14, 1993 it reached number one . The appearances in other discotheques in Switzerland increased, the DJ BoBo completed together with Curtis, Dani and the singer Emel .

The German record company EAMS brought the song to Germany, where it entered the German charts at number 32 on June 8, 1993 . The interest in DJ BoBo increased, so that he was repeatedly a topic in magazines such as Bravo or Popcorn .

In the summer of 1993, the US singer Rockwell's record company filed a lawsuit that the chorus of Somebody Dance with Me was a plagiarism of the song Somebody's Watching Me . A settlement was agreed out of court.

In the fall of 1993, the first album Dance With Me was released , which was produced in around 200 hours of work together with Axel Behre. In addition to Somebody Dance with Me, it includes the successful songs Keep On Dancing! , Take Control and Everybody , one of the summer hits from 1994. Gutze Gautschi and Mark Wyss from the record company Fresh Music were also involved in the production.

DJ BoBo took his first major tour together with the biggest Eurodance stars of the time, such as Haddaway and Culture Beat, on the “Mega Dance Festival” tour across Germany. At these concerts René Baumann met his wife Nancy Rentzsch (born November 23, 1970), who was still a singer with Haddaway at the time and was involved in the 3-o-matic music project .

1994-1996: There Is a Party & Just for You

The second album There Is a Party followed in autumn 1994 with the first single Let the Dream Come True and the other single hits Love Is All Around , There Is a Party and Freedom . In autumn 1995 DJ BoBo went on tour in Europe for the first time with his own stage show and played in halls with 2,000 to 4,000 seats. Backstreet Boys , who were still unknown at the time, were the opening act .

Almost simultaneously with the tour, DJ BoBo released the third album Just for You in autumn 1995 . In addition to some remixes of well-known songs, the first ballad Love Is the Price was included, which was released as a single and featured in Wetten, dass ..? Edition of January 14, 1996 was presented.

In September 1996 DJ BoBo appeared in the opening act of Michael Jackson's HIStory World Tour at concerts in Prague, Budapest, Bucharest, Moscow and Warsaw, some of which were held in front of 150,000 spectators.

1996–1997: World in Motion

In October 1996, DJ BoBo released the fourth album World in Motion , which featured the single hits Pray (the main theme of which is cancerously related to the chorus from Freedom ), Respect Yourself , It's My Life and the Shadows recorded with the VSOP ( Vienna Symphonic Orchestra Project ) of the night . 300,000 copies of the album were equipped with a three-dimensional cover, which was recorded by the Cologne 3-D photographer Igor Tillmann in the Egyptian Museum in Berlin with special 3-D camera technology.

Due to some differences, DJ BoBo separated from his record company Fresh Music in the run-up to the World-in-Motion CD and founded his own company Yes Music AG. Gutze Gautschi and Mark Wyss have tried since then with various publications (new editions of Dance with Me or the book The Forgotten Years ) to cast the career or success of DJ BoBo in a bad light.

The world-in-motion tour started in autumn 1996 with four semi-trailers, a 50-person crew and was supported by the then unknown boy band * NSYNC around Justin Timberlake .

Since 1982, when the Swiss hard rock band Krokus performed in the Hallenstadion , no Swiss musician had managed to fill the hall completely. DJ BoBo managed to do this on October 20, 1996. Since then, the Hallenstadion Zurich has been a concert venue on every tour.

1998-1999: Magic

The fifth album Magic followed in April 1998 and included the singles Where Is Your Love and Around the World . The “Magic” tour followed in autumn 1998 with a castle-like stage structure and a 15-meter-long catwalk that led into the audience. In the autumn of 1998 a tour edition CD from Magic followed and contained the new single "Celebrate" . In March 1999, www.djbobo.ch - The Ultimate Megamix '99, a mix album was released that contained 20 hits in a single mix. In June 1999 there was a Magic Open Air tour of five locations.

1999-2000: Level 6 & Mystasia

While they were still on the open air tour, they worked on the next album, which was released in October 1999 under the name Level 6 . The singles from it were called Together and the ballad Lies . For the first time, DJ BoBo also worked with other producers. He recorded three songs ( Last Day of 1999 , Best of My Life and Nightfly) in Gothenburg with Jonas Berggren from Ace of Base . Nightfly was originally supposed to be the first single from Level 6 according to the wishes of the record company, which BoBo vetoed. Nightfly was banned from the final track list of Level 6 and only released in 2002 on the bonus disc of the Celebration album. The Mystasia tour started with five different sets in December 1999.

2001: Planet Colors

Preparations for this album began in May 2000 when fans were asked on their website which successful song from the 1980s should be on the new album. The selected song was called What a Feeling and was recorded with Irene Cara . DJ BoBo and Irene Cara put the song on Wetten, dass ...? in front.

The album Planet Colors was released in February 2001 and contained the other singles Hard to Say I'm Sorry , Way to Your Heart and the title track of the Tour Colors of Life .

The “Planet Colors” tour led DJ BoBo through the largest halls in Germany and Switzerland with four different sets. The show took the visitor from a gloomy stage setting to a temple world and an Asian world to a colorful stage setting in the finale. The support program included No Angels and Marque .

2002: Celebration

In addition to a cover version of Celebration (originally by Kool & The Gang ), the Celebration album featured many guest singers such as Melanie Thornton , Gölä , Emilia , ATC , some of whom reinterpreted DJ BoBo's songs. Some songs such as Somebody Dance with Me or Pray were released in a "2002 version". Celebration was the last album to be marketed by DJ BoBo's first record company EAMS, among others.

The unique show celebration took place at the beginning of April 2002 with numerous guest musicians in the Arena Oberhausen in Germany.

The second concert in 2002 was a trip to Ulan Bator in Mongolia , where he was the first western musician to give a concert in the central stadium there in front of thousands of spectators. Although DJ BoBo had never released a CD there, his music made it to Mongolia through blackmailing.

2002-2004: Chihuahua & Visions

A small request from Coca-Cola Spain quickly turned into something bigger when the mambo song Chihuahua was used as background music for a commercial in the summer of 2002. It had to be produced within ten days according to the specifications and was sent to Spain as a demo version in MP3 format. There they supplied all radio stations with the song without any further feedback and a few weeks later the song made it to number one in Spain and Mexico.

In addition to the success in Spain and Mexico, work was carried out on the new album Visions . At the beginning of January 2003 the single I Believe was released , which with Let's Come Together (We Are Family) also contained the title track for the 2003 Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz , Switzerland.

The “Visions” tour began in May 2003 and had three different sets (from an Aztec temple to a cartoon world to a futuristic western saloon). The band was new to the show: for the first time, most of the music was played live with real instruments (drums, percussions, keyboards, guitar and bass). The female voices continued to come as playback. The male singers DJ BoBo and Anthony Moriah (aka "Tone") have been singing live at every concert since the late 1990s.

The second single, Chihuahua , has now also been released in Switzerland and became a number one hit, making it the summer hit of 2003. In France, too, the single became the summer hit of 2003 as the background for the advertising campaign and sold over 750,000 singles Eleven weeks in first place. Further great successes with Chihuahua were achieved in Italy and the Czech Republic, where second place looked out as the highest position. In autumn 2003 the single also reached England and Ireland , where the single reached number 36 and 11 respectively. The single was released in Australia and Japan. In response to the great success, a single with a techno remix and a Chihuahua album with the big summer hits were released in Switzerland .

In autumn 2003, at the end of the Visions year, the CD Live in Concert was released, the first live CD by DJ BoBo. In 2004 DJ BoBo retired to work on his new program.

2005: Pirates of Dance

At the end of November 2004 DJ BoBo presented some new songs and the new stage on the occasion of a showcase in Engelberg (Switzerland). As the tour theme "Pirates" suggests, the stage is a pirate ship with four possible stages. With a length of 32 meters and a width of 10 meters, the ship protrudes far into the auditorium.

The Pirates of Dance tour started in April 2005 and led through Switzerland, Germany, Poland and for two concerts to Disneyland Paris . The opening act occurred Nicole da Silva and Virus Incorporation of which had during the show appearances as acrobatics troupe.

The album Pirates of Dance was released in February 2005 and included the single Pirates of Dance and Amazing Life .

2006: Greatest Hits

Although DJ BoBo had already released a few remix CDs or an anniversary CD, he decided to release the first greatest hits CD in February 2006 . The song Secrets of Love, which was recorded as a duet with Sandra , was released as a single . Sandra was also a special guest at the Pirates of Dance closing show in February 2006.

As a special event, DJ BoBo organized a greatest hits show in Engelberg on August 1, 2006 ( Swiss National Day ) . Tickets for this concert were only available when buying a greatest hits CD, as it was designed as a thank-you concert.

The audience was asked in advance to come to the concert in red tops, as the stage consisted of a large white cross. Together this resulted in the Swiss cross .

2007: Eurovision Song Contest

On the occasion of a TV appearance on Swiss television in mid-October 2006, DJ BoBo expressed his intention to represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Helsinki ( Finland ) if the Swiss population so wishes. Votes on newspaper websites and radio stations were positive, and DJ BoBo submitted a song to the relevant jury.

In mid-December 2006, the jury made the decision that DJ BoBo would represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the title Vampires Are Alive . The single was released on March 9, 2007 in Switzerland and on April 20, 2007 across Europe, but is said to have been boycotted by some Swiss radio stations. The Evangelical Alliance called for the text to be changed or for the contribution to be withdrawn, as it "posed a threat to young people at risk of suicide". A petition from concerned Christians and the Federal Democratic Union (EDU) should get the song canceled. A total of 49,083 signatures were collected. In addition, the Swiss Federal Council was called on to maintain public peace. Regardless of this, the single was on March 25, 2007 at number 3 on the official Swiss hit parade. In its response to the petition, the Federal Council referred to the freedom of expression, the independence of the Swiss television jury and the artist's free creativity, which is why the song could not be canceled.

Despite high expectations - a British jury put him in 2nd place - DJ BoBo failed in the semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest , where he finished 20th. DJ BoBo then spoke out in favor of changing the regulations.

2008: Vampires

The album Vampires was released on May 11, 2007 and contains the singles Vampires Are Alive, We Gotta Hold On and Because of You . A showcase of the tour took place in Europa-Park Rust at the end of November 2007, and from the end of April DJ BoBo was on the road with the “Vampires Are Alive” tour. The opening act was played by Room2012 and in some cities by the Magic Artists. The first part of the tour ended on May 29, 2008 in Erfurt because of the European Football Championship. The second part of the tour began on September 6, 2008 in Geneva. From October 25th to November 2nd, 2008 DJ BoBo performed the highlights of the tour in Europa-Park as part of the Halloween Festival. The last concert of the “Vampires Are Alive” tour 2008 took place in Bern at the beginning of November , where the inauguration of the PostFinance Arena and the end of the tour were celebrated. Over 150,000 tickets were sold for this tour.

In April 2008, the single Olé Olé from the album Olé Olé - The Party was released . The single made it to number 12 in the Swiss charts and number 58 in the German charts without a video clip.

2010: Fantasy

At the end of February 2010 the album Fantasy was released. The first single Superstar reached the top 50 of the charts, the second single This Is My Time was only released as a download and did not make it into the top 100. "Secret concerts" were also held in Speyer, Leipzig, Berlin, Hamburg and Zurich at this time, in which DJ BoBo and band presented the album Fantasy to a small audience; St. Anton and Munich followed in March.

In the summer of 2010, DJ BoBo toured Germany and Switzerland with his twelfth show "Fantasy". The preview took place on November 27th and 28th, 2009 at Europa-Park in Rust, where the video for the single was filmed. A gigantic six-armed Buddha figure ("The Giant") is at the center of the 14.5 m wide and 12.5 m high stage structure. For the first time, Jane Bogaert was a live singer on stage.

2011: Dancing Las Vegas

In 2011 the 1000th DJ BoBo concert took place in Engelberg , Switzerland, and a little later the 1001st in Las Vegas .

On November 25, 2011, the Dancing Las Vegas tour started simultaneously with the release of the new album in Europa-Park Rust. The first single from the new album, Everybody's Gonna Dance , was released on November 11th. In March 2012 the second single La Vida Es followed , which landed at number 81 in the charts in Germany. In April 2012 the Dancing Las Vegas tour started in Oberhausen . The opening act for this tour is the vocal band Sonic Suite , who will also sing some of his pieces in an a cappella version together with DJ Bobo during the show. The Dancing Las Vegas Tour is DJ BoBo's most successful tour to date. Because of the men's football championship, some dates have been postponed from June to October 2012. On October 20, 2012, DJ BoBo performed in the Lanxess Arena Cologne, where Sandra Cretu sang the title Secrets of Love as guest star , a duet with DJ BoBo from 2006. The tour traditionally ended in Europa-Park in Rust around Halloween with small concerts in which 40 minutes of “The Best of The Show” was played.

2013: Reloaded

In April 2013 DJ BoBo released a new version of the hit track Somebody Dance with Me . In this remix , the Swiss singer Manu-L sang the chorus and DJ BoBo rapped the verses. The Swiss DJ Remady then mixed the song and released it as a single on April 19, 2013. It reached number 4 in the charts in Switzerland. In Germany he also entered the Top 100 and reached number 61. The single Take Control hit the charts in September as a remix by Mike Candys. The album Reloaded was released on September 20th . It contains well-known hits in a new version, including a. with Inna , Jessica Folcker or The Baseballs. Thanks to many downloads, the new version of Everybody with Inna also made it into the Swiss charts. The song was not released as a single, but still reached number 60 in the charts.

2014: Circus

In January 2014 the album Circus was released. It reached number 3 in the Swiss album charts and number 23 in Germany. On April 11, the first single Fiesta Loca was released .

The circus tour through Germany and Switzerland started at the end of April. Because of the immense size of the stage, the tour could not stop in all the halls visited so far. The heart of the new stage is a huge clown, which is supplemented with spectacular video, light and pyro effects. The ex- DSDS candidate Jesse Ritch appeared as a special guest .

2015: DJ Bobo & Inna

In September 2015 the song Everybody was released as a single together with the singer Inna in a "Mike Candy Remix". Previously, the fans had been asked to send in their own video for the song, from which a new video clip for the song should be created.

2016: Mystorial

On September 23, the album “Mystorial” was released. It includes u. a. the singles "Believe" which was released in February and "Life Goes On".

The song “Get On Up”, which can also be heard on the album, is the title track for the RTL show “Dance Dance Dance”. The video for the song was shot in Europa Park Rust.

2017: 25th stage anniversary

The Mystorial anniversary tour started on April 21st and led through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The accompanying album "25 Years - Greatest Hits" was released on the same day and landed in the charts at number 40 in Germany and number 11 in Switzerland.

2018: Kaleidoluna

On September 21st the album "Kaleidoluna" was released. The album contains 12 songs and a hit mix of well-known songs. The album reached number 25 in Germany and number 9 in Switzerland. The first single from the album is entitled "Yaa Yee" and was released in May, but did not make it into the Top 100 charts.

The album is the soundtrack for the 2019 tour.

Private

René Baumann grew up alone with his mother in Kölliken in the canton of Aargau , because his Italian father, Luigi Cipriano, had separated from his mother before René was born. At the time, Cipriano was working as a receptionist in Switzerland. Until he was six years old, Baumann lived mainly with his maternal grandparents. One of the hobbies in his childhood and youth was football. As a groundsman at FC Kölliken, he earned his first money, which he put into going to the disco or on his moped. In 1984 he decided to do an apprenticeship as a baker and confectioner , which he successfully completed. Baumann only met his father Luigi Cipriano, who died in October 2014, personally in 2001. Since then they have been in regular contact. Baumann's mother died in 2015 at the age of 70.

His first wife Daniela Baumann runs a pole fitness chain. Baumann has been married to his second wife Nancy Baumann , who is also part of BoBo's crew and who sang in the 3-o-Matic project during the 1990s , since 2001. They live together in the village of Kastanienbaum in the municipality of Horw in the canton of Lucerne . They have a son and a daughter together.

Since October 2006, DJ BoBo has been the national ambassador of the World Food Program WFP of the United Nations (UNO) and traveled to Ethiopia and Kenya as part of this project in early March 2007 and October 2009.

Awards

DJ BoBo posted 35 chart breakers and was honored ten times with the World Music Award for “The World's Best Selling Swiss Recording Artist”.

In the mid-1990s in particular, DJ BoBo won the Bravo Otto several times, among others for “Best Singer” or “Best Show”, and in 2001 as the first artist ever to win the “Honorary Otto”.

2005: Munich Olympic Walk of Stars

In 2006 he received a Diamond Award for one million CDs sold in Switzerland. In total, he sold around 15 million CDs worldwide (as of 2013).

According to his official website, he has collected a total of 260 gold, 29 platinum and two diamond awards worldwide during his 25-year career (status 01/2020, see biography at www.djbobomegafan.de).

Shows

The tours are very elaborate and each of them takes a good year to plan. They usually take place every two years.

Since the Visions Tour in 2003, DJ BoBo's shows have always featured a live band. This currently consists of Alex Vesper (drums), Andreas Sigrist (guitar), Pierangelo Crescenzio (bass) and Thomas J. Gyger (keyboard). Former members are Phil Dankner (keyboard), Zlatko Perica (guitar) and Hilko Schomerus (percussion). As an additional live singer, Anthony (Tone) Moriah has been on stage since 1998. When he died in 2009, Jane Bogaert came on tour as a live singer. She had also sung along at some concerts before. Former DSDS candidate Jesse Ritch has been on tour as a singer since 2014. In 2017, DSDS winner Aneta Sablik was on tour as a singer.

Movies and TV shows
