Deutschland sucht den Superstar ( DSDS ) is a German casting show that was first broadcast on November 9, 2002 by the TV station RTL . It is an offshoot of the British show Pop Idol , a concept that has been licensed worldwide since 2002 . In Germany , the show is produced by UFA Show (formerly Grundy Light Entertainment ) in Studio 30/31 of the MMC Studios ( Coloneum ) in Cologne .

Concept and marketing

The content of the program is to find a singer in a talent competition. Candidates are found through castings and applications, the number of which is reduced in several rounds (so-called "recalls") by the judgment of the jury. The candidates remaining from the qualifying rounds appear in subsequent broadcasts, so-called "motto shows". The jury assesses the singing and the appearance of the participants after each performance. From the motto shows onwards, the viewers will decide on the progress of the participants and the eventual winner by telephone voting , by SMS and via the Internet (via the official winario competition portal). EUR 0.50 is due for each voting participation. Until the final, the participants with the fewest votes are eliminated. The result of the vote will be announced on the same evening.

The winner receives a record deal, in seasons 8-14 there was an additional 500,000 euros prize money, since season 15 it has been 100,000 euros. All stages of the competition, as well as the lives of the participants themselves, are discussed in the weekly programs and in other RTL magazines.

The magazine was moderated by Peer Kusmagk and Tamara Countess von Nayhauß .

The final show of the first German season on March 8, 2003 achieved an average audience rating of 12.8 million (with peak values of up to 15.01 million).

The marketing of the young singers after the end of the season was also initially successful. All five winners of the first season reached the top 10 in the German single charts in 2003, Alexander Klaws and Daniel Küblböck even reached number 1 . The single We Have a Dream , sung by all participants in the first season , was the best-selling single in Germany from January 13 to February 17, 2003. Later the album United u. a. because of the production of Germany, the superstar is looking for profits again.

After the auditions, a total of nine shows followed, each with a specific motto. After each of these shows, one of the candidates was eliminated. In the first two motto shows ( Mein Superstar and Love Songs ), as RTL announced after the end of the season, Judith Lefeber was clearly ahead of Daniel Küblböck. The eventual winner Alexander Klaws started in fourth place and even fell back to fifth place in the second show. However, after two broadcasts, Lefeber decided not to take part in the competition. Nicole Süßmilch , who had already left the company, took her place . Küblböck won the third motto show (Hits 2002) (before Juliette Schoppmann ). And the fourth motto show (musical) , Gracia Baur won (ahead of Küblböck), while Schoppmann came second to last in this category, which she had previously practiced professionally. The second season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar started in autumn 2003. Both the moderator couple and the jury remained unchanged. However, the show could not build on the success of the first season. This was reflected both in the audience ratings and in the number of phone calls. There was also a big difference in the sale of the jointly recorded records of the final candidates. The commercial success of the winner was also significantly lower than in the first season.

Only an average of 5.33 million viewers saw the finale on March 13, 2004. The most successful broadcast of the second season was the first casting with 6.65 million viewers.

The later pop stars winner Sascha Salvati also took part in this season . This made it into the top 50, but then dropped out.

No record release related to the second season of DSDS could reach number one on the German sales charts: The joint single Believe in Miracles reached number eight, the joint album Magic of Music reached number two, but at nine weeks it had an unusual one Short stay in the top 100. Only the winner, Elli Erl , published three singles and one album in direct connection with the broadcast of the second season, which, with the exception of the winning track This Is My Life (third place), did not make it into the top 30 . Third-placed Philippe Bühler only started his career at the end of 2005 with a considerable time lag. Gunther Göbbel released the song Stand by Me as a member of the Lemon Ice duo .

Since, in contrast to the first season, 13 participants took part in the first motto show, there were two more shows (and, as an exception, two participants were eliminated in the first show).

Each of the eleven shows had a musical theme. According to the figures published by RTL after the end of the season, Philippe Bühler led Anke Wagner and Denise Tillmanns after the first motto show (Mein Pop-Idol) . The later winner, Elli Erl, came fourth and was only able to collect the majority of phone calls in the tenth motto show. The second motto show (rock and pop ballads) was again decided by Philippe Bühler before Denise Tillmanns. Both participants swapped places in the third motto show (My year of birth) , and Bühler was again ahead of Tillmanns in the Christmas show . In the fifth motto show (Elton John and Madonna) Tillmanns was again in front (ahead of Benjamin Martell). She kept her leadership in the sixth motto show (big band) , then again with Bühler as second. In the seventh and eighth theme shows ( hits from the 1970s and film music ) Bühler was again ahead of Tillmanns. Both swapped places again in the ninth motto show (songs by the jury) , whereas Elli Erl was ahead for the first time in the tenth motto show (hits from the 60s) . She won the final with 61 percent to 39 percent of the vote against Denise Tillmanns.

The third season began broadcasting on November 16, 2005. The previous moderators have been replaced by Tooske Ragas and Marco Schreyl . The show magazine was moderated by Nina Moghaddam and David Wilms . The jury was reduced to three people, and most of them were newly appointed; In addition to Dieter Bohlen, Sylvia Kollek and Heinz Henn evaluated the candidates.

In the first top 20 show, the later pop stars winner Julian Kasprzik took part and was eliminated.

The themes of the motto shows were, in chronological order, greatest hits , 80s , rock , big band , love songs , number one hits , soul and cozy rock . After the audience ratings in the second season were unsatisfactory, RTL returned with the third season to the structure of the show that was tried and tested in season 1 with only nine instead of eleven theme shows.

In the first motto show, Vanessa Jean Dedmon was 35.1 percent far ahead of Nevio Passaro with 13.3 percent. In the second motto show, the eventual winner Tobias Regner was ahead of Vanessa Jean Dedmon with 28.3 percent. Didi Knoblauch, who moved up, won the third motto show with 20 percent, ahead of Mike Leon Grosch (with 19.7 percent). The big band show was done by Mike Leon Grosch, Vanessa Jean Dedmon came in second, just ahead of Anna-Maria Zimmermann and Tobias Regner. The fifth show again won Mike Leon Grosch ahead of Vanessa Jean Dedmon, while Tobias Regner, as fifth of six, narrowly managed to get past the elimination. In the semifinals, Tobias Regner received 59 percent of the vote.

The candidate Stephan Darnstaedt announced his voluntary exit before the third motto show. He cited the excessive psychological stress as the reason. The successor for Darnstaedt was Didi Knoblauch, who had just failed in the top 20 shows. The final on March 18, 2006 was played by Mike Leon Grosch and Tobias Regner , who narrowly prevailed with 54.6 percent of the votes.

The audience for the final show was 7.04 million viewers. Compared to the second season, the third season was again more successful, but did not reach the peak values of the first season.

The departure of the candidate Didi Knoblauch in the show on February 19, 2006 was announced in teletext on RTL before the decision, and Tobias Regner's winning song, I Still Burn , was not written especially for him, as RTL claims, but been bought.

The castings of the fourth season took place in August, September and October 2006 in the German cities of Hamburg , Munich , Berlin , Cologne , Wiesbaden , Stuttgart and Dresden , as well as on the Spanish island of Mallorca . A total of 28,597 candidates applied.

Dieter Bohlen and Anja Lukaseder remained jury members, while Heinz Henn was replaced by the manager of the Fantastischen Vier , Andreas "Bär" Läsker . Presenter Tooske Ragas was also no longer there, so Marco Schreyl presented the show alone. Nina Moghaddam took over the moderation of the magazine for the show .

The top 20 shows were replaced with a single live show Now or Never . From the 15 candidates that remained after the round, the audience and the jury each selected five participants who entered the motto shows.

In addition to six German cities, including Berlin as the only city in eastern Germany , the castings also took place on Mallorca from August to November 2007 and, for the first time, on Ibiza .

Roman Lob , who had to retire in the fourth season due to a laryngitis , but von Bohlen received another chance at the superstar title in season 5, waived this bye because he did not want to endanger his training.

It won Thomas Godoj with 62.20 percent of the vote. Like Mark Medlock, he had the highest number of calls from the first Top 15 show to the finale.

In an interview with the Westfälische Rundschau (WR), RTL entertainment director Tom Sänger confirmed in May 2008 that there would be a sixth season. Moderator Marco Schreyl had already announced this a few days earlier in the final motto show of the fifth season. As the reason, Sänger stated that the market share of over 30 percent in the advertising-relevant group required a continuation. He also said that there will be some changes in the new season, especially the documentary aspect should be strengthened. Basically, however, everything stays the same.

For the first time, the candidates for the program were identified with a so-called “casting truck”. The pre-castings took place in Oldenburg , Stuttgart , Saarbrücken , Frankfurt am Main , Erfurt , Dresden , Hamburg , Rostock , Hanover , Münster and Munich . As usual, the jury was not present. Applications for the casting lasted until August 15, 2008.

On October 3, 2008, RTL announced that it had separated from the previous jury members Anja Lukaseder and Andreas “Bär” Läsker . They were in the 2009 season by music manager Volker Neumüller , as well as the MTV presenter Nina Eichinger replaced. The originally planned Max von Thun resigned voluntarily after the first casting due to serious differences with chief juror Dieter Bohlen.

The sixth season started on RTL on January 21, 2009 and was again hosted by Marco Schreyl . Nina Moghaddam took over the moderation of the magazine for the show again.

120 participants made it into the new round, which extended over four broadcast dates. In the new round in Tenerife , Spain , the participants had to endure tests of courage for the first time . For example, a giant snake was placed around the neck of the candidates . The male candidates had to sing a song hanging upside down on a rope from a high platform. Back in Germany, all participants had to sing the later winning track Anything but Love in the recording studio . The jury then announced that they considered the future finalists Daniel Schuhmacher and Sarah Kreuz to be the best singers. After the four appointments, twenty-five DSDS candidates traveled to Berlin and appeared again individually in front of the jury in the theater on Potsdamer Platz .

On February 28, the Now or Never Show took place, which determined the entry of the fifteen best candidates into the theme shows. Here - as in the fifth season - a telephone vote was carried out. The five candidates with the most calls went straight to the themed shows. The jury selected five more from the ten remaining.

RTL advertised that there were a particularly large number of exceptional candidates among the participants in the final round: Cornelia Patzlsperger always performed with a harp, Vanessa Neigert sang almost exclusively German hits, and Holger Göpfert, who had been a solo entertainer before taking part , accompanied them often on the piano. Marc Jentzen had already gained experience in the music business a few years earlier as part of the boy band Part Six . In the final on May 9, Daniel Schuhmacher won against Sarah Kreuz with 50.47 percent of the calls.

Season 7 (2010)

Mehrzad Marashi, season seven winner
  1. Mehrzad Marashi
  2. Menowin Happy
  3. Manuel Hoffmann
  4. Kim Debkowski
  5. Thomas Karaoglan
  6. Helmut Orosz
  7. Ines Redjeb
  8. Nelson Sangaré
  9. Marcel Pluschke
  10. Steffi Landerer

The seventh season started on January 6, 2010 with the jury consisting again of Dieter Bohlen , Nina Eichinger and Volker Neumüller . From 34,420 casting participants, 120 were selected for the second round. 35 of them reached the third round in the Caribbean (Dominican Republic), 25 of these made the fourth round, from which the 15 candidates for the Now or Never show on February 13th were selected. In this, seven motto show candidates should be nominated by telephone voting and three by the jury. However, the jury decided to apply the audience vote to their three nominations as well. These were Marcel Pluschke, Steffi Landerer and Ines Redjeb. This is how the ten applicants with the most calls got into the theme shows. With only three female candidates, they were the fewest finalists of all previous DSDS seasons.

The final was decided between Mehrzad Marashi and Menowin Fröhlich. The latter was already known to viewers from the third DSDS season. At that time, he retired prematurely due to a prison sentence, after which he took part in the casting show again in the seventh season. The winner of the seventh season was Mehrzad Marashi, with 56.04% of all callers, although Menowin Fröhlich won every previous theme show.

In the target group, the season reached an average of 4.24 million viewers, which corresponds to a 32.71% market share. Overall, it reached an average of 6.51 million viewers (market share 19.86%). The audience numbers at the auditions were ahead of those of the theme shows. The final reached the highest total number of viewers of all episodes; it was the most successful episode since the finale of the first season and reached almost two million viewers more than the finale of the previous season.

Season 8 (2011)

Pietro Lombardi, season eight winner
  1. Pietro Lombardi
  2. Sarah Engels
  3. Ardian Bujupi
  4. Marco Angelini
  5. Sebastian Wurth
  6. Zazou Mall
  7. Norman Langen
  8. Anna-Carina Woitschack
  9. Nina Richel
  10. Marvin Cybulski

The broadcast of the eighth season of DSDS began on January 8, 2011. The jury consisted of Dieter Bohlen , Fernanda Brandão and Patrick Nuo . The auditions and the follow-up round of the best 35 candidates in the Maldives took place in summer and autumn 2010 and were broadcast in January and February 2011. The top 15 candidates appeared on the first live show on February 19, 2011. As in the previous year, seven motto show candidates were selected by telephone vote and three by the jury. The jury again decided on places eight to ten in the audience vote, so that the ten applicants with the most audience votes came to the motto shows. For the eighth season, the studio design of the theme shows, which has been in use since the fifth season, has been fundamentally changed. Instead of the many different LED light elements that were in the background of the stage, this was completely replaced by a continuous surface of video walls. Since then, in addition to the large video wall that was already in place, which is used as a central entrance for the artists and can be divided in the middle, there have been two other equally large video walls on both sides. In the course of the reconstruction of the rear of the stage, the live band led by Lillo Scrimali was dispensed with for the first time .

On March 10, RTL decided that Nina Richel had to leave the show because of health problems. Sarah Engels, who had already left the first show, returned as a replacement.

Since the broadcast on March 12, 2011, the Youth Labor Protection Act has been enforced by the Cologne District Government with regard to the broadcast. School-age candidates like Sebastian Wurth from the eighth season are only allowed to appear until 10 p.m.

In the fifth motto show on April 2, 2011, a graphic was displayed with the phone numbers of the candidates Zazou Mall and Marco Angelini swapped. Therefore, some of the viewer calls were attributed to other candidates than intended. RTL then decided to let all six candidates compete again in the next show; all calls that were received up to the display of the wrong graphic were counted for the next broadcast, the following ones not. RTL announced that it would not charge the telephone provider for the invalid calls or, if this was not possible, reimburse them. Because of this incident, the season consisted of one program more than originally planned.

In the final on May 7, Pietro Lombardi won against Sarah Engels with 51.9 percent of the calls.

Season 9 (2012)

Luca Hänni, winner of the ninth season
  1. luca Haenni

The broadcast of the ninth season began on January 7, 2012. New jurors in addition to Dieter Bohlen were Natalie Horler and Bruce Darnell . The age limit of 30 years for candidates in previous seasons has been removed. For the first time, in addition to a record deal, the winner also received a prize of 500,000 euros. 35,401 candidates auditioned in auditions that took place in 35 cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The follow-up round with the best 36 candidates took place again in the Maldives .

A previously retired candidate was admitted to the live shows, so that 16 instead of 15 candidates took part in the first live show. In the top 16 show, only the audience chose the top 10 candidates, the jury had no voting rights.

In the Top 16 show, Marco Schreyl exchanged the final digits of the candidates Silvia Amaru, who made it through, and Christian Schöne , who was eliminated. In response to Schöne's protest, three days after the show, RTL held a 24-hour online vote about Schöne's return to work. The majority of those who voted (52.44%) decided against it.

Only three candidates made it into the top ten, making the lowest number of female finalists from the seventh season. For the first time, only one female candidate made it into the top seven. As in the seventh season, three male candidates took the first three places.

Of the four candidates for the seventh theme show, three were only 16 or 17 years old. Therefore, from this live show, the decisions were not announced until about an hour later, but directly after the motto show, in order to be able to end the program by 11 p.m. due to the youth labor protection act.

On the Wednesday before the final broadcast with the candidates Luca Hänni and Daniele Negroni , the company Print your Ticket commissioned by RTL had a technical breakdown: a test page was accidentally put online for around an hour, listing ticket sales for a tour by Daniele Negroni the headline "The new DSDS Superstar 2012" announced.

In the final on April 28, 2012, Luca Hänni prevailed against Daniele Negroni with 52.85 percent of the audience's votes.

On April 30, 2012, RTL announced that DSDS would be continued in 2013 despite the reduced audience ratings in season 9. At the same time, the station announced personnel changes: the jury members Natalie Horler and Bruce Darnell were replaced by the Tokio-Hotel members Bill and Tom Kaulitz , as well as the singer of the band Culcha Candela , Mateo "Itchyban" Jaschik . The programs were moderated by actors Raúl Richter and Nazan Eckes . The previous moderator Marco Schreyl no longer appeared. The tenth season started on January 5, 2013.

On March 6, 2013 committed RTL Olivia Jones as a companion for the candidates.

In the third motto show on March 30, 2013, an original artist rated his own song sung by a candidate for the first time: During one of her concerts with her audience, Andrea Berg followed the performance of Beatrice Egli , who sang her hit You have lied to me a thousand times , and was followed by Dieter Bohlen switched on by phone. In the seventh motto show on April 27, she was a guest judge on the jury.

Three female candidates among the last four represented a novelty in DSDS history. A women's final took place for the second time. On May 11, 2013 Beatrice Egli won against Lisa Wohlgemuth with 70.25 percent of the calls. This was the second time in a row that a candidate from Switzerland won.

Aneta Sablik, winner of the eleventh season

On March 13, 2013 RTL announced that there would be an eleventh season. You could apply from March 16, 2013 on the website of the station. Next to the permanent juror Dieter Bohlen sat rapper Kay One , pop singer Marianne Rosenberg and Mieze Katz , singer of the band MIA. , at the jury desk. The show was moderated by Nazan Eckes . The season started on January 8, 2014.

There were some innovations, for example the number of live shows was reduced from nine to six and combined with so-called challenges, in which the winner won a small car. The winners of these challenges were determined by the jury. By reducing the number of shows, two candidates were eliminated from each live show. Only in the semifinals, the fifth live challenge show, only one candidate had to go.

The final was therefore contested for the first time by three candidates. Dieter Bohlen did not compose the candidates' potential winning titles. In keeping with the motto of the season candidates for power , the finalists had to compose the piece themselves or have it composed by a team of producers. In the final on May 3, 2014, Aneta Sablik was able to prevail against Meltem Acikgöz with 57.9 percent of the vote. So for the second time in a row there was a winner at DSDS.

On August 29, 2014, RTL announced that Heino will take a seat next to Dieter Bohlen on the jury panel in 2015. A little later, on September 30, 2014, RTL confirmed that the Swiss DJ Antoine would also be on the jury. Mandy Capristo was announced as the fourth and final member of the jury . The season started on January 7, 2015. The live shows were hosted by Oliver Geissen .

This year, instead of live shows in the Cologne studio, there were four shows, each held at different locations. Two candidates had to leave the show on each show, except in the semifinals, in which three candidates had to leave the show. The programs were recorded and the results of the audience voting were announced live in a parking lot in Cologne, from where the candidates drove to the next venue. Only the final in the Bremen ÖVB-Arena, which took place with three candidates as in the previous year, was held live. In contrast to the previous year, the third-placed winner, in this case Antonio Gerardi, had to leave the competition immediately after his first appearance. The last two candidates Viviana Grisafi and Severino Seeger were able to present their season highlight and the winning title Hero of My Heart composed by Dieter Bohlen . In June 2015, RTL announced that Oliver Geissen would also moderate the final shows in 2016. On October 1, 2015, RTL announced that in addition to Dieter Bohlen , HP Baxxter , Vanessa Mai and Michelle would also be on the jury. During the auditions, each juror has the opportunity to send a candidate directly to the international recall with a gold CD . The candidates included Maria Voskania , who had already participated in 2003 and reached 12th place, and Angelika Ewa Turo, who had participated in 2016 but voluntarily resigned shortly before the live shows due to pregnancy. A shit storm developed in the social networks after RTL announced the departure of the 54-year-old candidate Alphonso Williams one day before the first motto show . This prompted RTL to issue a wildcard for the candidates Alphonso Williams and Benjamin Timon Donndorf. They were given the chance to continue participating in an online voting. Alphonso Williams won it with 91% of the vote against Benjamin Timon Donndorf.

In the final on May 6, 2017, Alphonso Williams prevailed against Alexander Jahnke , Maria Voskania and Duygu Goenel with 40.54 percent of the vote.

Career history of the candidates

Most of the winners of this show continue to make music, and for several it was the start of successful careers.

Some of the winners received short-lived publicity. Many winning singles reached number one in the charts, and the winners' first album was also mostly successful in the charts. In the majority of cases there was no further success. The winner of the 16th season 2019, Davin Herbrüggen , had the worst start of a first place, his single only reached number 34 in the charts.

Several of the other candidates also established themselves in the music business, for example Sebastian Wurth , Wincent Weiss , Sarah Lombardi , Ardian Bujupi , Annemarie Eilfeld , Anna-Carina Woitschack , Anna-Maria Zimmermann and Norman Langen .

particularities

Menderes Bagcı

The candidate Menderes Bağcı applied consistently from the first to the fifteenth season, but was rejected in the first seven. As a reward for his tenacity, he was promised an appearance in the fourth motto show of the fourth season. From the fifth season he was banned from appearing at Deutschland sucht den Superstar by Dieter Bohlen , which he canceled in one of his books. In the eighth and ninth seasons, Bağcı made it into the round of the last 60 candidates before he was eliminated. In the tenth season he was again rejected in the casting by three of the four jurors. In the eleventh season he reached the next round again, was directly elected for the next round in Cuba by means of a spectator vote with two other candidates, but was eliminated there together with another candidate. In the 12th season he also reached the recall, in which he dropped out, in season 13 he dropped out again with only one jury vote in the casting. In the 14th season he reached the recall again, in which he was eliminated again. In the casting of the 15th season he sang a medley of his previously performed songs out of competition, because he could no longer participate due to the reintroduced age limit of 30 years. In season 16 he appeared in the Ischgl recall and in season 17 in the live show preliminary round.

Max Buskohl and SSDSDSSWEMUGABRTLAD

In the fourth season, the candidate Max Buskohl was dismissed from the show - according to RTL at his request - because he would rather make music with his band Empty Trash . Since max buskohl not a week later with his band in the broadcast TV total of the TV station ProSieben could occur organized the presenter Stefan Raab, the talent show SSDSDSSWEMUGABRTLAD ( S tefan s UCHT d s S uperstar d it s ingen s oll w as e r m öchte u nd g erne a uch b ei RTL a uftreten d arf).

RTL DSDS clip contest

To accompany the fourth season, RTL interactive launched the RTL DSDS clip contest together with Clipfish . As with other casting shows, such as pop stars , candidates have the opportunity to apply via an online video. The winners of the competitions have so far only had moderate success in the relay. Mandy failed to make it to another round in 2006, and JanAR failed to make another round in 2007. The competition has not been held as such since 2008. However, RTL and Clipfish still offer the option of online applications. Good participants receive an invitation to the casting.

Bild newspaper

In particular, the first, third and fourth seasons were accompanied by intensive reporting in the tabloid Bild . Typically, this is done through multi-day campaigns about those involved - candidates and their environment, moderators, members of the jury - before and after the broadcast dates and by adding to the events shown in the program. Several participants were able to establish themselves in the role of a celebrity in the world of the boulevard over a considerable period of time, also outside the RTL group. In addition, the Bildzeitung specifically supported Annemarie Eilfeld in the sixth season , whose SMS poller could win 10,000 euros by forwarding the confirmation code.

Mass panic at autograph session 2011

At an autograph session by the DSDS stars in a shopping center in Oberhausen on Sunday, March 27, 2011, over 80 children and young people were injured in a mass panic. 14 young people had to be taken to hospital. According to a spokesman for the city of Oberhausen, three of them suffered broken bones, and many more had to be treated for bruises or circulatory collapse. The event was then canceled. The reason for the panic was the large crowd, as significantly more than the expected 5,000 fans flocked to the event.

Offshoot

In 2012, which was a spin-off telecast Germany Idol Kids ( Acronym : DSDS Kids ) launched. It is based on the format of the original and focuses on children between the ages of five and 14. The program is produced by Grundy Light Entertainment in the Coloneum in Cologne . The three-person jury consisted of Dieter Bohlen, Michelle Hunziker and Dana Schweiger .

The winner of the talent competition received a training grant and prize money. DSDS Kids was moderated by Daniel Assmann .

DSDS Kids was broadcast in four programs. In the first three broadcasts, three out of ten people were selected for the final by telephone voting. The first program was broadcast on May 5, 2012, but could not follow up on the success of DSDS and, with 1.95 million viewers in the target group, clearly lost to the 35th edition of Schlag den Raab .

Ten-year-old Marco won the competition in the final on May 25th.

reception

In January 2007, the Commission for Youth Media Protection (KJM) initiated an investigation into DSDS because of “possible socio-ethical disorientation of children and young people”. By then, the KJM had also received a number of complaints from the population. Anti-social behavior, according to the KJM , is portrayed as cool and promising by a figure like Dieter Bohlen. Disrespect in dealing with one another was part of the design of the show. It is not a question of singular derailments, but apparently a deliberate staging by the station, so the chairman of the KJM , Wolf-Dieter Ring . In a meeting at the beginning of March 2007, the KJM discussed the DSDS broadcast format as part of a hearing with representatives of the RTL broadcaster . The broadcaster had previously stated in a written statement that the program managers did not consider the program to be a violation of youth protection regulations, but at the same time admitted that Dieter Bohlen rated candidates in a sometimes marginal way.

In the conversation, the RTL representatives emphasized the urge for self-portrayal of the candidates, who would also be fully informed about the editorial design of their appearance” . Taking into account the results of the hearing, the KJM decided that RTL had violated youth protection regulations in certain afternoon programs in January 2007. Insulting comments by the jury, as well as the editorial preparation and staging of the appearances of some candidates are likely to impair the development of children under twelve years. A mass medium shows how people are belittled, ridiculed and ridiculed. In this way, anti-social behavior is represented as normal. This can counteract values such as compassion, respect and solidarity with others. The KJM also sees the broadcast of the relevant programs in the main evening program as critical with regard to children and young people between the ages of twelve and 16 and expects to be presented to the Voluntary Self-Control Television (FSF) during the production processes as well as an intensive discussion about possible youth protection problems. Despite the findings of the KJM , DSDS did not have to be postponed to RTL's late-night program, which is a common procedure for programs that are harmful to young people. The KJM will, however, increasingly monitor and analyze DSDS .

As a direct, satirical reaction to DSDS , a radio station launched the “casting band” Die Nixer in 2003 and massively advertised their debut single Nix . Although the track only consists of acoustic background noise, apart from the initial count, it entered the German single charts at number 73.

At the end of 2003 / beginning of 2004, Stefan Raab , who was controversial in parts of his media appearances, initiated the SSDSGPS competition (Stefan is looking for the Super Grand Prix star) in his program TV total on the TV station ProSieben, deliberately as a contrast to Germany looking for the superstar . Raab described DSDS in an interview with the news magazine Der Spiegel as "staged washing of poor souls that only satisfies the lowest instincts". Raab received the Adolf Grimme Prize (special prize) in 2005 for the concept of his own casting show . The jury of the Grimme Institute drew, among other things, a comparison between SSDSGPS and DSDS and stated: “… 'SSDSGPS' can be seen as a counter-model to varnished mega-events, where it is suggested with bigoted seriousness to create real superstars, actually but synthetic song puppets are installed, for the fastest possible commercial use, with a sustainability factor of zero - unless they continue to exist in a joke function for the gossip press ” (which referred to Daniel Küblböck). With his campaign “Freedom for Max Buskohl”, Raab criticized RTL's “gag contracts” for the candidates in the fourth season, as this candidate was not allowed to appear on ProSieben at TV Total due to his contractual relationship with RTL.

According to the Hamburg media professor Joan Kristin Bleicher, "Dieter Bohlen's sayings are deliberately launched in order to have an accompanying scandal".

In the course of the fourth season, after a start with high ratings, there was a significant drop in viewers in the “Top 20” shows phase. The media magazine DWDL.de attributes this to the fact that the initial casting phase, which "now looks more like a comedy show than a music competition" , has become the main thing.

RTL countered allegations of manipulation with regard to telephone votes, which also occurred at other casting shows, by publishing the voting results.

RTL entertainment director Tom Sänger described DSDS at the beginning of 2010 as "essentially a symbiosis of curiosity and the joy of self-expression", [...] of exhibitionism and voyeurism .

The Commission for Youth Media Protection (KJM) reprimanded the first episode of the seventh season with “degrading behavior on the part of the jury” and “editorial design of the program that deliberately ridiculed the candidates and exposed them to the ridicule of an audience of millions.” The chairman of the KJM complained, that antisocial behavior and offensive language would be presented as normal manners. The rules of the Voluntary Self-Control Television (FSF) have not been exceeded, but there is a need for discussion.

If candidates have survived the first round, they are presented with a questionnaire with over 130 questions from the production company Grundy, which asks for "the most intimate details", some of which are problematic under labor law .

The broadcast also gives the impression that all candidates would appear in front of the celebrity jury. However, as RTL confirms, this is not possible for “logistical reasons”. The candidates first sing in front of another jury, which makes a pre-selection for the celebrity jury.

In 2003 and 2008, Deutschland sucht den Superstar was awarded the German Television Prize for “Best Entertainment Show” . Three years later, the award was given again to the casting show: Florian Wieder received the German Television Award 2006 in the category “Best equipment (stage design / studio design)”, especially for the DSDS stage design.

In June 2008, the DSDS mobile offering received the convergence prize of the annual made for mobile award .
