Mandy Grace Capristo (born March 21, 1990 in Mannheim ) is a German singer and songwriter . She became known as a member of the girl group Monrose, which was put together for the casting show Popstars in 2006 , and has been working as a solo singer since 2011 after the group broke up.

Life

Childhood and personal life

Capristo was born in Mannheim in 1990 and grew up in Bürstadt in the southern Hesse region of Bergstrasse . Her German mother is a secretary by profession and her father of Italian origin is a sales representative. Capristo has an older brother. She took gymnastics, dance and piano lessons at the age of four and broke off her secondary school education in favor of a singing career. She was raised Christian and has been singing gospel music since her youth .

In 2008 Capristo was in a relationship with rapper Kay One . From the beginning of 2013 to October 2014, she was in a relationship with soccer player Mesut Özil . In November 2015, Capristo and Özil met again for a short time.

2001-2005: Kiddy Contest

In 2001, at the age of eleven, she was suggested by her music teacher for the Kiddy Contest in Austria , which she won with the song I wish me a cash machine, a cover version of Daylight in Your Eyes . The song appeared on the compilation Kiddy Contest, Vol. 7 . She then performed at shows like Tabaluga tivi or 1, 2 or 3 and in 2002 recorded the song Moskito for another kiddy contest album. This took first place in the Austrian charts. After that she was seen in the ORF children's series Glubschauge . In 2003 Capristo applied for the song Hero by Mariah Carey in the open casting for the show Star Search , but where she did not make it into the live shows.

2006-2010: Monrose

At the age of 16, Capristo applied for the casting program Popstars - New Angels Needs the Country . Finally, in the final at the end of November 2006, she was voted into the band Monrose alongside Bahar Kızıl and Senna Guemmour , who had seven top ten hits in the German charts and released a total of four studio albums, all of which were within the German top 10 could place. In November 2010, the band announced their split.

In 2007 the readers of the German edition of the men's magazine FHM voted Capristo 10th in the category 100 Sexiest Women in the World , after which it was featured on the cover of the August issue of the magazine. Since 2011: solo career

When the band Monrose split up in the spring of 2011, Capristo announced that they would devote themselves to solo projects in the future. She was the face of the cosmetics brand BeYu and presented the songs Overrated and Be You from her planned solo album at a trade fair . In cooperation with Peter Maffay , the song The time stops only in dreams from the musical Tabaluga and the signs of the times was created . In October 2011 she had an appearance with Maffay on Wetten, dass ..? , from October to December 2012 she performed with Sissi Perlinger , Heinz Hoenig , Rufus Beck and Maffay on the Tabaluga tour. In 2011 Capristo dubbed the character of Pamela Hamster in the Disney production The Fish Club .

Capristo hosted The Dome 61 alongside Collien Ulmen-Fernandes and Bela Klentze and sang the song One Moment in Time on the show on the occasion of the death of Whitney Houston . This version is included on the The Dome compilation of the same name . In 2012 she also took part in the dance show Let's Dance with professional dancer Stefano Terrazzino , where she took 7th place.

In April 2012, Capristo's first solo single The Way I Like It was released. The song is part of the soundtrack for the movie Turkish for Beginners . The title made it into the charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Capristo's first solo album entitled Grace was also released on EMI Music in April . The album debuted at number 8 on the German charts and was also released in the United Kingdom .

In August 2012, the second single from the album, Closer , was released and in September 2012 Capristo dubbed the frost fairy from the movie The Secret of the Fairy Wings . Also in September 2012 Capristo went on tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In 2013 she was nominated for “Best Female Pop / Rock National” at the Echo . She was part of the jury for the 12th season of the talent show Deutschland sucht den Superstar , which was broadcast from January to May 2015.

In March 2016 she published the single One Woman Army under the name Grace Capristo on Spinnup . In October 2016 the song Ricorderai l'Amore (Remember the Love) was released in collaboration with the Italian singer Marco Mengoni . In December 2016 Capristo appeared in the Helene Fischer Show and in October 2017 she took part in the music show Xavier's request concert live .

In autumn 2018 she played the role of Princess Jasmin in the musical Aladdin as a guest star for twenty performances . At the beginning of October 2018 she gave up her stage name Grace and released the song Si es Amor with Larsito .

In February 2020 Capristo was seen in a guest role in the ARD telenovela Sturm der Liebe .

Music and singing

Capristo publishes songs in English, only for the Tabaluga project and the movie Rapunzel - New spoiled Capristo has so far recorded pieces in German. She also sang the song Grace for the album of the same name in Italian, although she does not speak Italian. There is also a complete production of her songs in acoustic versions. She also added: "It is very important to me that I have a say in my projects, if I do not even make complete decisions." Her songs contain personal and private themes. She processed these into songs such as Side Effects , Sing and Risque . On the other hand, she wrote autobiographical songs like Allow me and Grace , which Capristo said were derived from personal experiences and those of her friends and family.

Influences

Capristo describes Beyoncé as her greatest musical influence and her idol. That's why she sang as a tribute to If I Were a Boy at the Comet music award ceremony . She also mentioned Whitney Houston as another influence, because of her she started singing. She continues: “ Destiny's Child has been with me all my life, and that's how I took my first steps into music. I also enjoy listening to India.Arie and Sade Adu . This resulted in songs like It Don't Matter , which are simply a bit calmer and more profound. ”Capristo could imagine working with these artists. Other musical influences are Rihanna and Nicole Scherzinger . In addition, she gained a lot of experience with Peter Maffay and was able to learn essential basics for her solo career from him. She admires Maffay's performance and can imagine further collaboration.

social commitment

In 2007 Capristo and Monrose didn’t leave Schau! on, a concert that turns against violence. It was a campaign by Bravo magazine aimed at encouraging young people to deal with issues such as socially disadvantaged areas, violent conflicts or bullying. 2008 was Capristo ambassador of the "Federal Foundation for Children's Hospice" and supported the Climate Change Program Climate fashion as jury president. For this purpose, fashion designers were sought who manufacture clothing exclusively with climate-friendly and sustainable materials. In addition, Capristo has been involved in Aktion Deutschland Hilft for victims of hunger disasters in East Africa since 2011 and called for a fundraising campaign in this context. At the beginning of 2013 Capristo performed in Austria as part of the Ronald McDonald Children's Aid.

Promotional activities and photo shoots

In 2007 she signed an advertising contract with Monrose for the razor brand Gilette . In the same year she modeled for the Ed Hardy fashion brand . In 2009 she modeled for the Otto catalog and appeared on the cover. In 2012 and 2013 she modeled for several magazines. She also advertises various companies such as Mercedes and L'Oréal .
