1, 2 or 3 is a quiz show for children that is broadcast on ZDFtivi , KiKA and okidoki on ORF 1 (until 2006 also SF ). The first broadcast took place on December 4, 1977 on ORF and on December 10, 1977 on ZDF. Since 2008, the current episode can also be seen on the website for seven days.

    history

The concept of the show comes from the USA . There the show was produced from 1972 to 1973 under the title Runaround by NBC Networks . From 1975 to 1981 it ran under the same title in the UK , produced by Southern Television for ITV . The version for the Netherlands was called Ren je Rot and was broadcast by TROS from 1973 to 1983.

The core of the concept was adopted for the German edition and the rules of the game modified. 1, 2 or 3 is considered the first real children's show on German television.

The first moderator was Michael Schanze , who performed 59 programs from 1977 to 1985. He helped the show, which ran on the Saturday afternoon program of ZDF, to great popularity - not least because of his self-sung theme song ( 1, 2 or 3 ... you have to decide, 3 fields are free ... ) and the clear pop (the index finger is quickly led sideways out of the tense oral cavity to generate the plopping sound) as a stop signal in the guessing rounds.

There was a mistake in the very first broadcast: When asked “Which gas is mainly in a balloon inflated by a person?” The answer given was carbon dioxide, but nitrogen would have been correct. This was cleared up in the show for the tenth anniversary by asking the question again and announcing the error later. One of the candidates who had stood on the field for CO 2 at the time symbolically brought back the ball that he had received back then.

The show ran on Sunday at Sunday's after-table .

Michael Schanze was replaced in 1985 by Birgit "Biggi" Lechtermann , who moderated the show for ten years until 1995. Rolf Zuckowski composed a new theme song, and today's slogan 1, 2 or 3 - last chance - over! replaced the pop command .

Gregor Steinbrenner moderated the program from 1995 to the end of 2005 . The dragon Fauchi was partner of the presenter in the studio at the time. Together with the bear Ted Tatze and the seal Piet Flosse , they formed the show's three mascots. In 2002 Gregor Steinbrenner set a record in the continuous quizzes as part of the 25th anniversary: On the beach in St. Peter-Ording he moderated 1, 2 or 3 for 25 hours without interruption . 11,040 candidates answered the 1,364 questions and earned 9,022 points, which, converted into euros, were donated to the German Sports Youth. Steinbrenner's successor was the radio presenter Daniel Fischer , who presented the program from the end of 2005 to October 2010. On October 16, 2010 Elton, well known from TV, took over the moderation of the show.

Since May 2009 there is 1, 2 or 3 also as a mobile stage show. The pilot show took place in Hückeswagen on May 17th, 2009.

In April 2011, a set, graphics and design relaunch took place.

    Candidate selection

In each broadcast, three teams compete against each other: a team from Germany , one from Austria and a team from a third country. Until the end of 2006 the third team always came from Switzerland , currently the third team travels every week from a different country. Each team consists of a mixed team of three children (two boys and one girl or vice versa), who answer the questions posed by the moderator by saying "1, 2 or 3 - last chance - over" on one of the three Answer options assigned field remain. In order for the players to have as uniform a level of knowledge as possible, fourth or fifth grade students always compete against each other. The broadcasters ZDF and ORF follow different approaches when selecting candidates: In both cases, entire classes as well as individual children in grades 3, 4 and 5 can apply as candidates. The children are only allowed to take part in the 4th grade. After the draw, however, ZDF leaves it entirely to the class, which 3 children are selected, while ORF organizes a small casting within the class .

    Gameplay

The questions of each program have a specific focus. The moderator gives three possible answers for each question, which are also visualized by cartoons on screens. To answer the children have to jump to the correct answer field in front of the symbol. In order not to reveal the answer to the other players, the candidates switch back and forth between the fields until the moderator shouts “1, 2 or 3, last chance ... over!” (Formerly: “Watch my plop, because Pop means stop ”. ). The answer only applies when you pass , after that no change is possible. With the words “If you are really right, you will see when the light comes on.” (In the early years “Whether you are right or not, the light will tell you right away” ) the correct answer field is illuminated with fireworks and the solution betray. Those who knew the answer used to be rewarded with a point in the form of a ball, and whoever was the only candidate right was allowed to take an extra ball for many years. Since 2010 it has been played without balls, only the points are distributed. From 2005 to 2010, the teams could also ask their Piet for a question . This joker, named after the mascot Piet Flosse, doubled the number of points for a correct answer.

Experts who are invited to the studio as guests help time and again to explain complicated questions clearly. But also demonstrations and experiments on topics from science, sport or technology help the children to understand complex issues.

At the grand finale, the candidate team that won the most balls received the 1, 2 or 3 Lego trophy earlier and now a 1, 2 or 3 trophy as well as a grant of 300 euros (up to 2002: 500 DM) for the class fund, with the second and third placed receive 200 and 100 euros respectively. In addition, every child receives a package with surprises. For some time a winner of the day was also honored. It was the single candidate who had won the most balls. This received a special award. In the case of programs recorded in Lego-Land, a blue Lego elephant was included, which guaranteed the wearer the permanent right to visit the amusement park.

The camera child has been unique in the German-speaking television landscape since the beginning . Every week a child operates a television camera while recording and takes their own television images. These are played in the program and marked with a frame so that they can also be recognized by the audience.

From 2002 to 2010 you could also play interactively from home. To do this, one selected the teletext page 549 and pressed the colored buttons (red = answer 1, yellow = answer 2, blue = answer 3) on the remote control for each task, but this was not possible on all televisions. After each answer, the individual score was displayed. If you answered as many or more questions as the candidates in the studio correctly, a solution word was displayed at the end of the program. This solution word could be sent in via the Internet or postcard and participated in the drawing of prizes. Technically, this play-along variant was based on the fact that each keystroke referred to a different teletext page.

    Current broadcast

From November 12, 2005 to autumn 2010, the program was hosted by Daniel Fischer , who on June 30, 2007 also presented the 600th program. The program has been moderated by Elton since October 16, 2010 . The current title song is by Stefan Raab .

After Swiss television left the program at the end of 2006, the third team in each episode now comes from a different country. There were children from Namibia , Greece , Georgia , Finland , Italy , Lebanon , Russia , Turkey and the USA to compete against the teams from Germany and Austria.

In addition to the moderator, the blue seal Piet Flosse has also been in the spotlight since 2002 : Piet supports the candidates in the studio and honors the winners at the end. In short films, the large speaking doll experiences exciting adventures on all aspects of the studio. Mostly Alexander Königsmann plays in the shown sketches . Before Piet, the dragon Fauchi was the presenter's partner in the studio on site. Together with the teddy bear, Ted Tatze , they make up the show's three mascots, one of which can be won as a Lego trophy at the end of the show.

In 2006 1, 2 or 3 was on tour with special programs . As part of these episodes, moderation takes place at unusual, topic-specific locations, from the skating rink to the pony yard to the shipyard, the 1, 2 or 3 stage, including the moderator and candidates, even sailed through the port of Hamburg on a pontoon.

Since the beginning of 2007, each team has been able to decide for themselves when to add a question to their bonus question: If a team is particularly sure of knowing the correct answer, it presses its buzzer and sets the Piet that it received from the moderator at the beginning . If the child then jumps to the correct answer, it receives twice the number of balls. Since only one team may place its joker on each of the seven questions, speed and calculation are required, otherwise the joker expires. Before that, there was an eighth question on every show, the master question , with which you could get two balls. Since January 2007, 1, 2 or 3 has also been broadcast in 16: 9 widescreen format.

    Trivia

After moving to ARD, Schanze hosted the children's show Telefant . There, too, the "pop" was his trademark. On Saturday, September 8, 2012, “1, 2 or 3 - the big anniversary show” was broadcast on ZDF. Michael Schanze was there too and occasionally let it "pop" loud and clear. At the end of the program, all the celebrities present sang the original theme song - accompanied by Schanze on the piano.

In the TV series The Simpsons, there is an episode in season 26 called One, Two or Three . It was in the primary school of Springfield , the Waldorf education introduced. As a result, the representatives of the "Mathletes", including Lisa and later also Bart , won against the competitors from the (financially superior) elementary school of Waverly Hills .
