Tobias Künzel (born May 26, 1964 in Leipzig ) is a German pop singer and composer . He is known as the front man of the group Die Prinzen . About 60 percent of the repertoire comes from him. Künzel has been a deputy member of the GEMA Supervisory Board since 2009 and continues to hold this office (as of January 2020).

Life

Künzel was a student at the Leipzig Thomas School and was accepted into the St. Thomas Choir in 1973. After graduating from high school in 1982 and doing military service in the NVA , he studied drums and singing at the Leipzig Music Academy from 1984 to 1988 . During his school days, Künzel founded the band Puma (abbreviation for PUnk MAchine) with his friend Dirk Posner . In the meantime he also helped out as a drummer in his brother's band called Zakk-Set . He also played drums in the combo of his regiment . During his studies he joined the group Süd-Rock , again as a drummer , from which Amor & die Kids emerged in 1985 . Their biggest hit was Come on with me (for a ride on the sofa) .

As a singer he was in the GDR telecast bong with Susanne, never eat again Garlic! known. In July 1989, Künzel was at number 1 on the GDR hit parade with the song name .

In 1990 he joined the princes as a singer . According to his own statements, his preference is still the drums.

This is probably one of the reasons why he initiated the formation of the group Final Stap , in which he mainly plays drums and only sings "on the side". In London, Tobias Künzel is also active as the drummer in the band Ruff as Stone , which currently (as of January 2020) also includes Austin Howard, Rob Tree and Tobias' older brother Lutz Künzel.

In addition, Künzel was successful with the musical Elixier , which celebrated more than 40 sold out performances in 1998 in Leipzig under the direction of Horst Königstein . Künzel is the composer of the work and played the main role of Hagen in Leipzig . The texts of the piece come from Künzel's wife Kati Naumann. In 2008 Elixir was re-performed at the Dresden Comedy .

Tobias Künzel has his own recording studio in which he produces young bands and music for television , theater and musicals . The music for the children's quiz show 1, 2 or 3 or the music for the children 's musical Urmel flies into space comes from this “bread clay studio” . Künzel himself has already made guest appearances on television, he was seen in two episodes of Lindenstrasse and in Schloss Einstein .

Künzel was a guest lecturer for pop music at several universities, for example at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in 2002 and at the University of Leipzig in 2004 . He is also the official ambassador of the “ Fans for Kids eV ” association for children with cancer. Since 2007 he has been supporting the Bolivian civil rights movement “ConTraDo” with money and donations in kind.

At the beginning of 2013 Künzel went on tour with Heinz Rudolf Kunze under the name “KuK” (= Kunze and Künzel). In 2013, this cooperation resulted in the album “No one asks us - live”.

With Maximilian Reeg and Steffen Lukas , Künzel wrote the musical Comeback! The Karl Marx Musical , which premiered on November 2, 2013 at the Plauen Vogtland Theater. In 2015, Künzel and his colleague from Prince Sebastian Krumbiegel took part in the music program “ Sing my Song - The Exchange Concert ”. In November 2015 he received a Bambi for his work .

Private

Tobias Künzel is married to Kati Naumann , the couple has two daughters and lives in Pönitz near Taucha and in London. His father Harry Künzel is a musician, composer and choir director in Hohenheida near Leipzig. His daughter Pauline became known in the early 2000s with her band project Something .
