Udo Dahmen (born July 12, 1951 in Aachen ) is artistic director, managing director and professor of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg , author and percussionist .

Dahmen studied classical drums at the Musikhochschule Rheinland in Aachen and Cologne . He made accompanying studies in Paris with Dante Agostini . After completing his studies, Dahmen was a freelance musician in Aachen ( Rufus Zuphall ) and drummer in the jazz rock group Out with Theo Jörgensmann , Hendrik Schaper and Micki Meuser , then in Cologne and since 1980 in Hamburg. During this time there were numerous recordings and concert tours ( Kraan , Lake , Eberhard Schoener feat. Sting , Nervous Germans, Gianna Nannini , Nina Hagen , Jack Bruce , Gary Brooker , Kangaroo, Sarah Brightman ).

From 1983 to 2003 Dahmen was a lecturer in popular music at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater . At the same time he was director of the Yamaha Music Station from 1988 and from 1994 to 2003 spokesman for the Popkurs , a contact course for popular music at the university.

In 2003 Dahmen became artistic director, managing director and professor of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim and vice president of the German Music Council .

Since 2013 he has been explaining a well-known pop song from the last decades in the SWR2 cultural program under the heading "explain to me pop" on Saturdays .

Dahmen was and is significantly involved in the development of education and training in popular music and in the context of drums. He determined the development of the pop course at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg over a period of 20 years (1983-2003). Since 1994 he has been the speaker and head of the course there. From 1994 to 2003 he built up the rock, pop, jazz course at the vocational school for music in Dinkelsbühl . Since 1996 he has initiated further training measures for percussionists and musicians in popular music at the Federal Academy for Musical Youth Education in Trossingen . The development of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg , which emerged from the Rock Foundation Baden-Württemberg, was significantly shaped and influenced by Dahmen as artistic director. As Vice President of the German Music Council, Dahmen pushed ahead with the modernization of the Music Council. He is u. a. to attribute the current developments in the field of popular music ( Popcamp , introduction of popular music to Jugend musiziert ). From 1995 to 2015 he was President of the German Percussion Association Percussion Creativ . He has been honorary president of the association since December 2015.
