Gianna Nannini
Gianna Nannini (born June 14, 1954 in Siena ) is an Italian songwriter and rock singer who became popular with songs like America , Latin Lover , Fotoromanza , Bello e impossibile or I maschi .
Youth and family
Gianna Nannini was born in 1954 in Siena as the daughter of a traditional family of confectioners . Her brother Alessandro , who was successful in motorsport in the 1980s and 1990s , is now running his parents' company, the Gruppo Nannini .
After graduating from high school in Bologna , she left home at the age of 18. She first studied piano in Lucca and then composition in Milan . In the first years of her music career, she suffered from depression . She finished her studies in literature and philosophy in 1994 with a thesis on Il corpo nella voce (“The body in the voice”) with summa cum laude .
Nannini lives with her partner and daughter (* 2010) in London.

Janis Joplin became a role model for her early on. Her autobiographical and introverted debut album Gianna Nannini from 1976 was followed by the poetic record Una radura in 1977 . In 1979, California was the first successful long-playing record, the feminist content and provocative cover of which caused a minor scandal in Italy. The title America caused a sensation in Catholic Italy because Nannini exchanged the torch of the Statue of Liberty for a vibrator on the album cover .
In 1981 she wrote the score for the film Sconcerto Rock and sang the theme song Ora . On her album GN , also released in 1981, she experimented with electronic music and landed a hit with the title Occhi aperti . Her new manager Peter Zumsteg helped her to achieve her final breakthrough. With Latin Lover from 1982, a fruitful collaboration began with the music producer Conny Plank , who had already produced Ultravox , Eurythmics and Kraftwerk . By the time Plank passed away in 1987, they made two more albums together. The single Latin Lover became one of their greatest hits in Germany.
The LP Puzzle (1984) also marked the breakthrough in Italy, where shortly afterwards the single Fotoromanza was celebrated for three months as number one and summer hit of the year, which brought Nannini a gold record in Italy . Puzzle became the best-selling record by a singer up until then. At the music festival “Festivalbar” she won the final concert in the Arena of Verona . In 1987 Nannini produced the single I maschi with the Swiss producer Armand Volker , with which she represented Italy at the 18th World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo . In the same year she set Die Dreigroschenoper to music together with Sting . In 1987 and 1988 the rock singer performed on a tour of several months across Europe in sold-out halls in Italy, France, Germany and Scandinavia. In 1988 the album Malafemmina was released .
In 1990, in collaboration with Edoardo Bennato, the hit Un'estate italiana was created , which they performed at the opening ceremony of the Soccer World Cup in Italy in the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan. In 1992 the Spanish version of Maschi e altri was released and in August 1996 their best-of album Bomboloni with well-known successes and three new tracks. In 2000, Nannini wrote the soundtrack for the cartoon adaptation of Michael Ende's novel Momo , again experimenting with elements of electronic music.
With the album Aria , which is characterized by electronic music and sound effects, the producers broke new ground in 2002. Noise computer and vocoder form the basis of the 13 songs. The album, which was successful in Italy, was released without their consent. Because, according to Nannini's opinion, the “beautiful songs” that were created in two years in rock style were “destroyed beyond recognition with a lot of electronics [...]” . After the disappointment with Aria , she took sole responsibility for the album Perle (2004). Musically, she relied on the piano and the musicians of the “Solis String Quartet” from Naples , which consists of four classical strings, to reinterpret 14 of her favorite songs. The album became a great success in Italy. In 2005 her autobiography Io was published in both Italian and German.
In 2006 Nannini celebrated her 30th stage anniversary with grace and returned to rock music. The album sold so well that it went platinum shortly after its release. With over 400,000 units sold, it later achieved the status of the Italian diamond plate; it was the most successful CD of 2006 and was at the top of the charts for eleven weeks. In 2007 an international commercial for the new Fiat Bravo appeared , in which an acoustic version of their title Meravigliosa Creatura from the album Perle was used. The success of the song and the spot brought Perle back into the Italian top 50 sales charts three years after it was first published.
In April 2007 the album Pia come la canto io was released , on which Nannini had worked for eleven years and which - like Grazie - had been produced by Wil Malone. On it is a collection of songs that she wrote for a pop opera. The orchestra with which Nannini toured Europe included a rock band with two guitarists and the Solis String Quartet from Naples. In November 2007 GiannaBest was released in Italy , a double CD with 26 of her hits and three previously unreleased titles, for which she received a diamond record in February 2008. In 2009 she acted as co-godmother for the charity event Amiche per l'Abruzzo - a pop and rock concert that took place on June 21 in Milan's San Siro Stadium and the proceeds of the infrastructure of the region damaged by a severe earthquake benefited the city of L'Aquila . Together with the writer Isabella Santacroce, Nannini wrote the song Donna d'Onna - a song that focused on the community of Onna , which was hard hit by the earthquake, and served as a kind of recognition piece for the campaign.
tax evasion
On April 5, 2014, on behalf of the Tribunale di Milano, the Guardia di Finanza confiscated Nannini's villa in Siena including the riding stable. From 2007 to 2012, the artist is said to have not taxed income of 3.7 million euros from concerts and recordings sales through two companies in Ireland and the Netherlands .

- ↑ The year of birth is controversial: Nannini herself states 1956 on her website ( Memento from December 22, 2010 in the Internet Archive ), and this number has been consistently adopted in the media; in the article of the Italian Wikipedia, however, is 1954, with reference to the information in Who's Who in Italy (see here ( Memento from December 21, 2011 in the Internet Archive )) and in the autobiography of a former schoolmate Nannini. There is also an extract from the birth register from 1983, which confirms 1954 as the year of birth ( reproduced here ( memento of November 29, 2014 in the Internet Archive ))
