Musica e dischi ( Italian for "music and records / CDs"), M&D for short , was an Italian music magazine that existed from 1945 to 2014. It was best known for creating weekly music charts .
history
The magazine was founded by journalist Aldo Mario De Luigi , who previously worked in the advertising industry and at the VCM label (predecessor of EMI Italiana ). The first edition appeared in October 1945 under the name Musica , from the November edition, however, the title was Musica e dischi . De Luigi was also publisher, editor-in-chief and initially the only editor. Initially, the monthly magazine was held in daily newspaper format and consisted of only four pages. It established itself as an industry journal for the emerging phono industry and as the number of subscribers increased, so did the number of employees.
Musica e dischi was the first Italian medium to begin creating weekly music charts at the end of the 1950s , which were initially only published in the American Billboard magazine from 1960 , and in Italy since 1963. Some of these were sponsored by the Associazione Fonografici Italiani (AFI), the association of independent music producers in Italy. The number of pages had increased significantly in the meantime and four-color printing had also been introduced. From the 1960s, the annual publication Chi & Dove , an address directory of representatives of the music industry , appeared in addition to the magazine . In 1968, after the founder's death, his son Mario De Luigi took over the magazine.
Further offers at the end of the 1970s were the three-monthly special issue Musica & Nastri , which dealt with the new tape technology, and, since 1985, MusicaBanca , a song and album database. Only in 1986 did Musica e dischi switch from a daily newspaper to a more manageable magazine format. At the same time, pure subscription sales were expanded to include sales at selected sales outlets. At that time, the number of subscribers at home and abroad was 15,000. Finally in 1996 the graphic appearance was modernized and the M&D logo, which was retained until recently, was introduced. The magazine has had a website since 1999, and the weekly magazine MD has been published online since 2007 .
From the 2000s onwards, the editorial staff of Musica e dischi was also affected by the crisis in the music industry, eventually closing the magazine in 2010 and relocating all activities to the Internet. From March of that year, monthly and weekly magazines were only published online. In May 2014, 70 years after the company was founded, Mario De Luigi announced the final cessation of all activities. The website was subsequently converted into a paid archive. De Luigi died at the beginning of 2018, whereupon the internet offer was also closed.
Charts
Musica e dischi had been compiling monthly song charts since the 1950s , and from 1960 onwards they were determined on a weekly basis (published as a disco press ). In 1970 album charts were added for the first time, initially monthly, from week 18 also on a weekly basis. M&D also worked several times with the professional association of independent music producers, the Associazione fonografici italiani , most recently in 2004. The number of positions changed and when the magazine was discontinued in 2014 it was 50 (singles) and 100 (albums). In addition to the single and album charts , Musica e dischi recently published monthly special lists for indie , classical and jazz albums as well as for "printed" music (sheet music and music-related book publications).
The charts are being continued and determined on the basis of weekly surveys of selected dealers (random samples of 100 sales outlets out of 300). Since mid-2018, the publication has been via HitParadeItalia .
